CHAPTER 4
I woke up to the sounds of annoying beeps. I tried to move, but my body felt a little too heavy, especially my hands. I tried to open my eyes only to fail. I felt a large hand grasp mine, and as if it was a fright response my eyes immediately opened to try and scan any danger. "Relax, you are at the hospital," Alexander replied. I looked around to see a hospital suite and then at Alexander. He looked tired. He was surprisingly in a casual outfit.
"How long was I out?" I asked, looking at the light outside. "Ten hours," he said, as the nurse came in to check my vitals. "Why are you here?" I asked, confused as I tried to sit up. He glared at me yet helped me sit up. "That's your first question?" he said, his voice hoarse and angry.
"Well yeah, you don't need-" The doctor walked in, stopping me mid-sentence. "How are you feeling now?" The doctor asked. "My head hurts and my body feels so rigid," I sighed. "You did take a hard fall. Are you taking your medicines?" he asked. I nodded slowly. "You should increase the dose. I'll talk to your doctor about this. But for now, you have to be here for at least a day to make sure you are okay," he said, writing down on his notepad.
"Did you tell mom and dad?" I asked slowly, looking at Alexander. "No, I am surprised they haven't looked for you yet," he said, handing me my phone. "They won't," I said, calling Samantha. "I need you to take care of all my appointments for today and tomorrow I'll come in tomorrow afternoon-" "Samantha, she is in the hospital asking my new assistant to send over everything to the hospital for me," he said, walking to the window.
He sat back down beside me. "Now are you going to tell me what the fuck happened?" he asked. I sighed, not looking him in the eye. "You don't need to show you care, okay? You don't even need to be here," I said, finally looking at him as memories of that night started, coming back to me. "Scarlett, I need you to understand that I am not leaving again. I know we started a bit rough, but you need to understand that I am not the same shy and caring person I was back then. I have changed, a lot has changed, but that doesn't mean I can't try to work our friendship out, you know that, right?" He said, looking at me.
"Really? Do you mean that? Cause I know you have become so heartless, Alexander. I tried to get in touch with you over so many years. Middle school, high school but you never once tried to come back. I don't care if you don't care about me," I said angrily. I felt him grab my jaw and pull me towards him. My skin burning at his touch. Our faces centimetres apart. His eyes stared into mine intently.
"Don't lie to me, Rose. I know you do care. I know you hate me for leaving and never coming back. I am not your knight in shining armour or anything, but I am trying to help you out here. It's for both of our benefits, so suck up your sorry little sob story and act mature for once," he whispered.
I sat there staring back at him. His hand is still holding my jaw but gently now. "You think I am the only one who cares? I know you liked being around me, Alexander. And we both know you haven't forgotten shit. So don't take the high fucking road in front of me and act all tough just because your sorry little girlfriend dumped you," I glared back. He immediately let me go, his eyes turning darker as he growled.
"You wanna talk about your past, Scarlett," he said, waiting for me to reply. "That's what I fucking thought," he got up, grabbing his phone.
I sighed, the heat leaving the area that surrounded me. What was that? Why was everything between us always a fight? Why couldn't we just act civil and be friends? He had stayed over last night and helped me out so much when I wasn't even in the right state of mind. He didn't deserve what I just said. He walked into the room, taking a seat with his laptop in his hand.
"I'm sorry, it's just an instinct to always protect myself and harm others," I said, playing with my fingers. When he didn't respond I looked up to see him staring at me. "You know you don't always need to prove yourself? You just need to relax for now. Go to sleep," he ordered and went back to his work. I sighed, closing my eyes and drifting off to sleep.

I felt a light hand on my cheek making me steer a little. I opened my eyes slowly and looked at Alexander staring at me. "You need to eat something," he said, motioning to the food. I opened my eyes fully, and I tried to sit up only to groan out of pain. He got up gently placing his hand behind my back, as he tried not to hurt me. He put his other hand in mine, helping me pull myself up. He set the pillow behind me and sat down. "Did you eat?" I asked, and he nodded, continuing to type on his laptop.
"Dad is abusive," I said, looking at him. He immediately looked at me. "What?" he said, turning towards me and looking for any kind of harm. "I am okay right now Xander but I can't go back there," I sighed. He sat there not saying anything. Should I have told him? "He has been hurting Mom, me, and Emily for a long time now. Me and Eily get off easy but Mom," I said, trying to not say anything about it. "Where do you plan to stay now?" he asked. "I have an apartment that I bought with my own money," I said and he nodded. I ate in silence for the next half an hour. "You know you don't have to stay here, right? I'm okay now," I said.
"Just shut up," he said, not even looking at me. I sighed going through my emails on the phone and replying to them. A few minutes later I heard the room door open and Mr and Mrs Black walked in worried. "Darling, how are you?" Mrs Black rushed to me. I smiled as she examined my face which had a gauge around my head and my hands which were wrapped too.
"I'm fine," I smiled at her softly. "You worried us to death," Mr Black said. "You didn't have to come over, I am much better now," I said. "We would have come earlier if we knew earlier we just found out a few minutes ago," he said glaring at Alexander. "Here is your stuff," he said, handing Alexander a bag. "I'm gonna shower and change you to keep her company," he said, getting up and going to the washroom.
They both sat down and started talking to me about anything and everything except the accident. Alexander walked out in ten minutes with wet hair and a white shirt that clung to his torso and black sweatpants low on his hips. He dried his hair as he looked at me. "Okay that's enough, let her rest," He said walking to me and placing his hand on my head to check for any fever. I didn't miss Mrs Black smiling a little at her son.
They both got up, taking our leave. "Take care, darling," she said, kissing my head. "You too," she smiled at her son, messing his hair and he groaned. I sighed, laying back down already tired as I saw him sit and just work. "Thank you," I mumbled, almost closing my eyes as I drifted to sleep.
The next morning, the doctor said I needed to rest a lot more now and that I was free to go as all my reports were normal. Alexander did all the procedures, which meant he paid the bill. He guided me out towards his car. I was wearing fresh clothes which he had newly bought. He opened the door for me, making sure I was okay and got into the driver's seat. I gave him the address and he drove in silence.
As soon as we neared the destination, he said. "You don't need to come in today. So rest all you want, I can take care of everything," he said. "I know but right now with the whole CEO thing, I can't," I said, sighing. "Just do as I fucking say," he grumbled. "You have enough time and you have done so much already," he said, pulling up in front of the building. "Thank you," I said, grabbing the bag with my old clothes. As soon as I closed the door he zoomed off. I smiled as I walked up to my apartment. This is going to be a long day.

There was a loud knock on my cabin door. I knew it was Alexander. The past week after the accident, he had been a frequent visitor. His knock was something I could recognize now. "Yes, Xander?" I said as he opened the door and barged in. "I need you to handle this," he said, handing me the file, and he took a seat. I looked at him confused. He usually just left.
"Okay," I said, looking through the file. "You know you don't have to stare at me like that," I said, not looking up. "How are you feeling?" he asked. I closed the file. "You know you don't need to find all these small excuses. I am fine. It's been a week. I am recovering quickly. Thank you for checking up on me. But can you come in here sometimes to not just talk about work?" I smiled.
"Don't push it," he said, getting up and leaving, making me chuckle. Samantha walked in a few minutes later. "Your father is asking for you," she said, fidgeting. She knew about the whole moving out thing. I nodded and got up to see him.
