Hop
(A/N: That's Sewa's dress.)
As for the coming Sunday, Niyi planned to give his life to Christ. The old man upstairs actually listened to his prayer.
He was immensely grateful for the appearance of Funmi even though he did not like her much. She was so bubbly and loud.
"Get me your best dresses immediately," Funmi ordered as soon as they stepped into the clothing store.
The attendants immediately went to work. The five of them brought forward five elegant dresses of different colors and styles.
Funmi inspected each of them and chose the silver dress. "Bring another set." She gave Sewa the silver dress and said, "Go change. Now!"
Sewa looked too terrified to argue. Again, thank God for Funmi.
The three of them sat and waited for Sewa to step out. After a few minutes, Sewa came out. Niyi could not help seeing Sewa in a new light.
The dress made her seem taller than she already was. It fitted her like a glove and hung on to her body with the halter neckline.
"Turn around." Funmi said in a bossy tone.
Niyi eyes popped out as he glanced at her bare back. He followed the flow of the ebony skin as it disappeared into the dress.
"I don't like it," Elijah said with a sour look.
"But it's pretty," Niyi protested.
"I agree with Elijah. The dress makes her look like a disco ball. Take a look at the sequins on the bodice and hem. I don't like it," Funmi said with an air of finality. "Next!"
The attendants brought another five dresses. Funmi selected three of them. All of which Sewa tried on and all of which Funmi rejected with comments like, "Too long...Too short...Makes her look sickly...Color is wrong for her skin."
Sewa looked tired too. "Is this necessary?"
Funmi growled, "yes. Just one more dress."
"How about that dress?" Sewa asked, pointing to a lone dress wrapped in nylon.
"That? Are you sure?"
"Oh. That just arrived today from Zuhair Murad," the head attendant said.
"Let's try that then."
Sewa disappeared with dress and emerged a few minutes later.
Niyi gawked. Her bossom delightfully stayed firm in the dress. Her shoulders seductively called attention. The sleeves of the off-shoulder clapped around her arms, flowing downwards with the dress. The waist held firmly with the emerald band that came with the dress.
"This is it! This is the dress!" Funmi squealed with joy.
Sewa seemed to tremble as she gave them a small smile.
"You look amazing," Elijah mused.
"I can't wear this. It's too expensive!"
So that's why she looks ill. Niyi quickly said, "I'll pay."
"But..."
"Don't worry. Consider it my payment for the things I did to you."
"What things?" Funmi asked.
"I want cash not a dress!" Sewa said. "I don't want to owe you anything."
"My life is in your hands at this very moment so don't worry," Niyi fished for his credit card.
"The dress comes with a purse and a pair of heels," the attendant said.
"No problem."
Niyi noticed Elijah collected the dark green purse and black heels. He sat Sewa down and murmured something to her.
What was he telling her? Why was he lifting her dress? Why was he taking off her tacky wedge heels? Why was he wearing the heels on her? Why was he even bothered?!
"She can wear the shoes herself, you know," Niyi said with a sneer.
"Thank you, Elijah."
Niyi noticed how softly she spoke to Elijah. Why could she not talk to him the same way? Aside from the fact he scammed her, he was a pretty decent guy.
"Well, I deserve a 'thank you' too."
"This is payment for what you did to me."
"What exactly did they do to you?" Funmi asked, curious.
"It's a long story."
Soon, they were back in the car heading back to the event center. Sewa explained everything to Funmi who gasped and cursed at most of what she said.
"How could you guys?!"
"I wasn't involved!" Elijah protested, keeping his eyes on the road.
"I told you I was sorry," Niyi muttered.
"Don't mind them. They are so stupid."
"Thank God for you in my life. Now, I can afford my own restaurant elsewhere. Anyway, what is so scary about Niyi's dad?"
Funmi began to speak with a dramatic 'hm'. "Well, as far as I'm concerned, I don't want to get on his bad side. Don't be fooled by his smile o. I heard from someone he controls a number of armed people in the underworld. He even regulates the control on black market. If not for that man eh, Nigeria suppose be ashes by now. I respect him sha because he is like a vigilante. He helps those in need and gives punishment to those who deserve it."
Niyi sulked in his seat. Of course, his father is like a hero to all. Very much unlike his lazy, dreamer of a son. It becomes very tiring to listen to his father achievement because he could never live up to his expectation. What was the use? He just needed to stay alive and out of his father's way.
"Close your eyes," Funmi whispered.
Niyi took a quick glance at the mirror to look at them. Funmi was applying make up on Sewa. He took another quick peek and noticed her hair was pinned to the side. Niyi looked again, noticing how the light danced on her bare neck.
He cleared his throat and crossed his legs. Well, Sewa looks pretty today. He can finally see why Elijah is so hung up on her.
They arrived the event center with the other guests. The carpark was packed and Fuji music could be heared.
All four of them descended from the vehicle attracting attention from everyone in the area.
Niyi could not help letting his eyes roam again. How did she become beautiful? She was arrogant, snarky and plain just the other day!
The four of them walked into the hall, drawing eyes. Mostly from the men. Funmi looked at her friend with pride as if to say, 'I made that girl!'
"Wow," Danielle greeted them. "That is one beautiful dress. Good afternoon, Mr Adekanye, Miss Oguntade and Mr Akintayo. Have a good evening." The woman sailed away.
"I knew this was the dress. If you meet your future husband here, remember it was all thanks to me. Okay?"
Sewa giggled in response.
Was she blushing? He eyed the spots on her cheeks that grew darker. He rolled his eyes and scanned the room for his father.
He did not need to bother himself. Mr Adekanye Snr already spotted them. His white agbada flowed as he approached them. Niyi involuntarily gulped as his father's presence fused tension.
"I suppose you are Sewa Ade?"
