Chapter 15 - The Last Tribe

In the Arctic Ocean, one of Monarch's submarines was approaching a huge iceberg, the submerged part of which, much larger than the emerged part, seemed to be filled with considerable energy, purple in color, fueled by the permanent solar radiation that hit this point of the planet.

_"Shark-1 to base." said the submarine's commander into the radio. "We are entering Tiamat's territory."

_"Copy that, Shark-1." Gretchen replied from her communications post in the Middleton coastal base and surrounded by other Monarch operators who were listening and watching the radar screen tensely to see what was happening. "We have your position on the radar screen. What do you see?"

_"This is not normal. The domain's energy is interfering with our radar. No visual of Godzilla... We are going into stealth mode." warned the commander, not really reassured.

Gretchen confirmed this answer and continued to observe with the greatest attention the slightest change on the screen. Meanwhile, the submarine continued to approach more and more the enormous underwater ice cave, not observing for the moment any sign of life in the surroundings. But suddenly, the submarine and the entire crew were violently shaken when a powerful atomic breath erupted, passing right next to the submarine to come and start to perforate a tunnel in the ice wall. Godzilla had just emerged from the darkness of the ocean, his eyes luminescent and continuing to spit his destructive radioactive beam without worrying about the rest.

_"Evasion maneuver, quickly!" ordered the commander while staying upright as he could because of the violent tremors generated by the waves of Godzilla's breath.

From another part of the lair, another organic and inhuman sound was heard as a wall burst, releasing an immense titan 847 feet long and having the appearance of a monstrous and intimidating sea serpent, with a slender body covered in sharp scales and streaked with an intense purple bio-ultraviolet energy. Tiamat, angered by this attack that had woken her from her sleep, emitted a shrill roar before launching herself to attack Godzilla who responded with his own roar of defiance. Without losing a moment, the two aquatic titans launched themselves to the assault and entered into a violent collision. Tiamat, very fast, managed to gradually wrap her body around Godzilla, trapping him and beginning to try to suffocate or crush him in her constriction. The King of the Monsters roared in fury, struggling furiously in this deadly embrace, and bit deeply to tear a large chunk of flesh from Tiamat's body. She reacted with pain and anger while with his colossal strength, Godzilla managed to free himself.

Refusing to give up so easily, Tiamat inhaled, concentrating a large accumulation of water just before her mouth to create a solid hydrokinetic bubble which she then spat right into Godzilla's face, who groaned in pain and was left half-blind from the impact as if a wall had hit him. Taking advantage of this advantage, Tiamat charged to attempt a throat attack, but Godzilla retaliated with a violent claw strike to the face that sent Tiamat back.

The serpentine titan then growled, glaring at the king of monsters with unprecedented hostility. She had refused to answer his call and now he had come to make her pay for her audacity. However, Godzilla had not come for such a trivial matter. All he cared about was the energy that was overflowing in this lair and he was ready to destroy anyone who got in the way of his goal. Tiamat charged again, accelerating her speed to the point that she managed to land a violent blow with her sharp tail in Godzilla's side before he had time to react. Grunting in pain and seeing the gash that had managed to make him bleed slightly, Godzilla frowned. Believing she had the upper hand, Tiamat once again trapped the King of Monsters in a deadly embrace of her serpentine body, and to prevent him from biting, she used the amphibian growths on her head to completely envelop Godzilla's head and attempt to suffocate him. But Godzilla, fed up with this time-wasting confrontation, concentrated more and more energy and...

With the life support systems slightly damaged by the shockwave of Godzilla's breath, Monarch's submarine had risen to the surface. The commander and his radio operator had opened the submarine's emergency hatch, now finding themselves in the open air.

_"Try to reestablish contact with the base, we must..."

The commander's sentence was interrupted by the explosion of a colossal atomic breath from Godzilla that had emerged from the depths and rose up into the sky. A few moments of heavy silence passed and the two men watched, dumbfounded, as the ocean water turned bloody as various large chunks of bloody, shredded flesh rose to the surface... The water rose, Godzilla emerging with Tiamat's half-pulverized and charred head in his jaws, shaking it violently before throwing it away with a roar of triumph and diving back under the water.

_"My god... he killed her." the commander breathed.

Without wasting a moment and after some engineering efforts to restore at least the primary systems, the commander was able to regain contact with the Middleton base and observed on the radar screen what was happening through the images that the underwater drones were transmitting live. Godzilla, without any hesitation, swam into the immense tunnel that he had drilled with his atomic breath, entering Tiamat's domain.

_"Gretchen, this is Shark-1. Godzilla has killed Tiamat and is now entering her lair."

_"Roger that. I'm transmitting the information to Castle Bravo." she replied.

After swimming for long seconds, Godzilla finally arrived at the heart of the immense iceberg, where all the energy of the solar winds came to concentrate. Yes, such power would be useful to him for the upcoming fights, he knew it. However, he could also feel that the tenuous but very present influence of Destroyah that resided in him was also hungry for this energy. But he would know how to handle it, he was the king of the monsters after all and besides, he had no time for hesitation. Too much was at stake. Without hesitation, Godzilla entered the heart of the glacier, plunging himself into sleep and thus letting his immense body begin to absorb the energy around him.

Meanwhile in the Hollow Earth, Jia, Ann, Trapper and James' group had followed the water dam that followed a precise direction through the thick jungle of this hidden valley. They came out of a defile between two rocky cliffs to arrive in a larger space but just as thick and stifling. But as Jia walked in front, Trapper held her back by gently placing his hand on her shoulder.

_"Wait a minute..." he breathed warily as he looked around and moved forward first.

Ann and James came to see what was happening, intrigued as Jia, who seemed anxious, spoke to them in sign language and they did not seem reassured.

_"What did she say?" Trapper asked them seeing their faces.

_"She says we're not alone." Ann replied.

_"I was sure of it, I knew I had felt something." Trapper added, being even more cautious.

_"But... I don't see anything at all..." James said, continuing to film with his camcorder.

However, the group had the unpleasant feeling of being observed by several pairs of invisible eyes. Ann stayed close to Jia to protect her while Trapper took a small knife out of his pocket, ready to use it.

_"Come on, I'm waiting for you..." he said as if to give himself courage.

James, who had moved away a little, continued to observe and try to see something through his camcorder. But suddenly, a figure perfectly camouflaged to blend into the tree just behind him grabbed him from behind, closing his arms around him, making James scream in fear and the others jump in fear too. Immediately, other human forms emerged from several hiding places and vegetation and surrounded the small group. These men and women, armed with fearsome-looking spears that seemed to be carved from crystal, Ann recognized their ethnicity but also their unique tribal attire and these tribal paint marks on their faces. She had a hard time believing it. Iwis, alive! Yet she thought the race was extinct with the disappearance of the Skull Island tribe following the storm.

Threatened by the spears, the group did not make any sudden movements, James raising his hands in surrender while Ann kept Jia close to her to protect her. Trapper, seeing that his ridiculous little knife would be no match for these spears, immediately put it in his pocket and surrendered without making a fuss. The Iwis observed these strangers who had dared to enter their hidden territory, but suddenly, one of them, the woman who seemed to lead this group of warriors, focused her attention on Jia and seemed surprised to see her. The young teenager too, although intimidated, could not hide her surprise to see other people like her, because until then she was convinced that she was the last.

_"We... we come in peace, please do not kill us..." James stammered.

No response came from the natives, but their leader immediately signaled to the others to escort these people. Faced with the threat of the spearheads, Jia's group had no choice but to obey and come.

After a long walk through the thick jungle, the group was led to the heart of the hidden valley, towards immense structures of natural translucent crystal that formed real pillars several dozen meters thick and that seemed to support the entire structure of the valley. The lush vegetation of the jungle gradually gave way to ancient structures but built by human hands, revealing a real small ancient city. Jia, Ann, James and Trapper, still under the close surveillance of the warriors who escorted them, could see with amazement many other Iwis, men, women and children of all ages, watching them with suspicion. But as the group of intruders was led towards the center of this Iwi city, in front of the steps of what looked like a temple, their eyes fell on a hallucinatory vision.

_"Oh my god..." they all said in unison.

A magnificent pyramid, made entirely of the same crystalline material filled with a particular energy, rose before them to a height of several hundred meters and a staircase was visible on its surface to lead to its summit. Moreover, at the top of the pyramid, there was something else, like a sort of giant cocoon of levitating crystal.

_"It's really incredible..." James breathed, fascinated. "An entire Iwi civilization preserved and alive within the Hollow Earth. And these sculptures... They seem to have been shaped from a quartz crystal. That must be their energy source.

_"Yeah, I feel a considerable energy here too." Trapper admitted. "But let's try not to get carried away, okay? I remind you that they haven't decided what they're going to do with us yet."

As she walked, Jia could see the eyes of all these Iwis, her people, settling on her and observing her carefully. She then turned to Ann who remained close to her.

_*I can feel their thoughts.* she signed.

The small group was brought to the center of the small square, not far from the steps leading to the entrance of the temple and the great pyramid. Around them, the Iwis gathered to observe what was happening. But looking up, Ann noticed another incredible discovery on the ceiling of the valley.

_"Oh my god, look... An uncharted vortex." she indicated.

_"There are even several." James added, pointing to others spread across the surface.

_"Passages to the surface world, maybe even all over the planet." Ann said with fascination.

But her observation was interrupted when one of the Iwi warriors, a rather robust man with a stern look, appeared right in front of her to look her straight in the eye in perfect silence. Ann then decided to look at him too without making any gestures.

_"Hold their gaze, it's a form of greeting. Don't offend them." she suggested, having studied Iwi customs through the years.

_"Yeah, uh... it doesn't seem to work well with me." James stammered, who also had to face another Iwi who was staring straight at him.

Suddenly, a sound, almost similar to the gong of a kind of bell in a church, was heard resonating within the temple. Immediately, the woman who led the group of warriors hastily headed towards the steps of the temple. There, Ann's group could contemplate the appearance of a new silhouette, feminine, appearing and leaving the temple and walking with a slow but sure step. The effects of light and shadow generated by the torches and the glow of the crystal, however, prevented her from being seen well, but this woman seemed to be dressed in a long dress and from her position and posture seemed to be someone very important in the tribe, something that was confirmed when the warrior introduced herself to her and greeted her with a very respectful gesture then pointed out the strangers with a simple glance towards them.

_"How do they communicate?" Trapper asked, intrigued.

_"Telepathy." James said confidently.

As if obeying an order, the warrior woman nodded respectfully and stepped aside while the other woman in a long dress held out her hand towards the group of strangers. Another woman, older and dressed in a tunic that made her look like some kind of priestess, also responded with a gesture of respect and walked towards Jia, whom she took by the arm without making any sudden gestures and invited her to come with her.

_"What? No, wait, you can't take her, I... No, leave her!"

Ann was starting to panic, forcing James and Trapper to have to hold her back as the guards became more hostile, blocking their path with their spears while Jia was led by the priestess towards the steps of the temple. Ann then insisted, really worried about her adopted daughter. Seeing Ann like this, Jia reassured her.

_*It's okay.* she signed. Although not really reassured, Ann knew that there was not much she could do and decided to trust Jia.

James tried to reassure her, taking her by the shoulder and making her understand that their adopted daughter was strong.

Jia didn't really show any signs of fear, but rather seemed confused by all this as she was accompanied, climbing the steps as the mysterious woman in the long dress advanced towards her. The priestess who accompanied Jia then motioned for her to stand there, still with benevolence, then withdrew. Jia then obeyed and remained in place. The woman in the long dress then revealed herself in the light, showing a face of great beauty, thin, black hair styled in a long braid behind her neck and sporting a sort of symbolic tattoo on her forehead as well as tribal attributes unique among all the others, surely indicating a special status within the tribe. She was surely their queen or something like that.

Jia and the Iwi queen looked at each other for long seconds, communicating by this unique telepathy specific to their people. The queen then held out both her hands, inviting Jia to join hers, which Jia did with an unexpected feeling of confidence in her. But as their hands joined, Jia's eyes widened and he gasped, her mind suddenly flooded with a series of visions.

She relives several moments from her past... Her childhood within her tribe on Skull Island... The storm that ravaged the island and decimated all of her people, then her rescue by Kong after the water mysteriously spared her... Her adoption by the Possible family and all the love she received from them... Her meeting and friendship with Elsa... Her meeting with the spirit of her ancestor, Moana... The revelation of her status as Titan of Life... Her confrontation with Chernabog that she managed to defeat thanks to her new power... But other visions arose, like once again this nightmare vision, a dark room filled with bones, and this giant threatening simian silhouette sitting on a gloomy throne, opening two intense and cruel blue eyes... Then, she saw herself, with Elsa, both climbing the steps of the great pyramid to its summit to come to this giant crystal cocoon, inside which a giant and troubled shape but very familiar seemed asleep...

The visions ceased and Jia seemed to calm down. She and Queen Iwi looked at each other and then smiled, as if understanding each other. The Queen then gestured to the strangers to no longer be treated as prisoners and to be allowed to approach freely. As the spears were lowered, the rest of the group was relieved and allowed to come with the Queen and Jia into the temple.

They walked through a series of luminescent corridors, having been dug into the crystal of the great pyramid, to finally arrive in a large pyramidal room, the heart, in the center of which was this enormous crystal much brighter than the rest, suspended from the ceiling. The eyes of Queen Iwi and Ann then met.

_"Can I...?" the scientist asked timidly, pointing to Jia.

The queen nodded, even showing a small friendly smile towards Ann and James, showing them her gratitude for having adopted Jia and taking care of her during all these years. The couple then joined their adopted daughter who told them incredible news by pointing to the central crystal.

_*The signal... This is where it comes from.* she signed with conviction.

_"Yes, of course..." Ann breathed, a light of understanding in her eyes. "The signal that brought us here... It's the Iwis... They're calling for help."

On this statement that surprised the others, the Iwi queen gave them a demonstration, turning towards the central crystal and with a circular gesture of her hands towards it, seemed to trigger a resonance that made the crystal vibrate and made it emit these very particular sounds, like invisible waves spreading and creating a real wave beyond the crystal of the pyramid. This phenomenon left the group speechless.

_"Wait, so they send an SOS and then what? Godzilla hears it?" Trapper asked.

_"Yes... They brought him out of his torpor." Ann replied. "But not only him... I'm sure Elsa will have heard it too. A call for the primordial guardians of the world."

_"An SOS for what?" James then pointed out. "These people already live in a nightmare world filled with bloodthirsty monsters, what could scare them so much?..."

_"Uh, honey, I should point out that she understands everything we say." Ann warned him softly.

James then noticed that the Iwi Queen had been staring at him for a few seconds, slightly annoyed by what he had just said.

_"And I meant that a world filled with monsters is absolutely ideal for raising a family, isn't it?" James added rather sheepishly as he tried to catch his mistake.

The Iwi Queen, not really convinced, continued to stare at him for a moment, triggering a feeling of unease in James who almost took refuge in fear behind Trapper, who lightly patted his arm to reassure him. Ann and Jia watched this scene with slight mocking smiles on their lips.

But very quickly, Jia became serious again and looked longer at the central crystal of the temple, the very source of the signal, of her coming here. It was therefore indeed a call for help to the great protective titans, of which she herself was now part after having acquired the power of the Titan of Life inherited by Moana. Her thoughts turned to Elsa and Kong, knowing that they were together somewhere in the Hollow Earth... Who knows what they were going to discover on their side...

************

Meanwhile, in the forgotten lands of Hollow Earth, Kong, Elsa on his shoulder, had continued his journey through the hills, still guided by the young Suko who was now much more friendly and cooperative. The young titan guided them to a much less fertile and welcoming territory, showing a landscape of dead black rock crossed by rivers of lava and volcanic mountains. Faced with this apocalyptic vision, Kong and Elsa could not hide a certain unease, especially when they saw the scattered skeletons and bones of various giant creatures. What could have caused such havoc and killed all these giant monsters? This question crossed Kong and Elsa's minds as, despite the unease, they decided to follow Suko into these devastated moors devoid of all life, now heading towards a gigantic black and frightening mountain overlooking all the others.
