Chapter 12 - Lost World
On the surface world, the Titans continued their fight against the endless clouds of the living, tentacled, poisonous black sludge tide that continued to gush out all over the planet and invade highly polluted areas to devour the noxious gases and waste, thus increasing its already very large organic mass. Despite their powers, Rodan, Gamera, Baphomet, Leviathan, Anguirus, Sekhmet, and Quetzalcoatl were struggling to contain the advance of this thing from space, that was designated under the name Hedorah by Monarch, that nothing seemed able to stop. Worse still, this black tide seemed to constantly generate growths, like legions of deformed creatures that launched an assault on the Titans to attack them. Even the support of the human armed forces to help the Titans proved insufficient, the bombardments pulverizing entire columns of muddy monstrosities that were immediately replaced by others.
Gamera had joined the city of Metroville to fight the black wave that had arrived there and to support him, the Parr family, the Incredibles, had joined the giant turtle to help him in this fight.
Meanwhile, Godzilla had tirelessly continued his crusade in search of more and more power. After having swallowed almost all the radiation at the Chernobyl site, the king of monsters had continued across Europe, ravaging more and more nuclear power plants and sites to devour all the energy that was there, thus depriving millions of human homes of energy, but he did not care. In addition, the residual evil influence of Destoroyah continued to haunt and gnaw at him, not improving his mental state and making him more and more unstable. His body overflowing with radioactive energy, Godzilla was now in the port city of Cadiz, Spain. Making his way through the city, crushing streets and small buildings without any precaution, Godzilla let out a roar as the population fled in panic. Monarch's forces on site had deployed ground troops to direct civilians to shelters, while planes flew over the area and monitored the titan's actions, but were unable to get any closer. From the control room of Castle Bravo, Serizawa, Kim, Hiro and Ron could see the events unfolding live.
_"We can't get any closer!" warned one of the pilots into the radio. "Godzilla is emitting too much radiation, everything around him is burning!I don't know where he's going, but he's really pissed off!"
In fact, thanks to the zooms of the cameras of the organization's flying drones, everyone could see the phenomena of intense heat around Godzilla, so much so that the water of the ocean began to boil when he entered it and dove, heading towards the open sea. Nervous about what the titan might do next, Serizawa ordered the satellite operators in the room to calculate the trajectory that Godzilla would take.
_"According to estimates, everything indicates that Godzilla is heading towards the Arctic Ocean." one of the operators said formally.
_"What titan is in this region?" Kim asked, also very concerned.
_"What? I thought there were no titans in this area." Ron added.
The screen then showed the holographic map of the sector coveted by Godzilla, but above all, the obvious location of the titan that lived in this place.
_"Unfortunately so... A classified file, number 324... Titanus Tiamat." Serizawa breathed, who feared the worst. "Titan 19. Extremely aggressive and territorial. Its entire body is covered in razor-sharp scales."
Seeing the holographic projection of the designated titan's form, resembling some sort of nightmarish sea serpent, Kim, Hiro and Ron shivered with fear at the thought that such a thing existed, but it raised even more questions.
_"But... Why is Godzilla heading towards her?" Hiro asked. "Clearly, Tiamat is not threatening the world at the moment."
_"It's more serious than that, alas." Serizawa admitted, turning to them, his gaze dark. "Tiamat's territory is right in the path of the northern hemisphere's electromagnetic solar winds, making it the largest energy reserve on the planet."
Just by hearing these words, the three young people guessed Henri's fears.
_"So... if Godzilla kills Tiamat and seizes her territory..." Kim summarized. "He will be overloaded with energy."
_"And his power will be such that next to him, the explosion of the Hiroshima bomb would be equivalent to a common firecracker." Serizawa added.
While this news alone was enough to scare everyone, to Kim, Hiro, and Ron, it didn't make any sense. Godzilla was clearly preparing for something, but in this case he was surely already powerful enough to confront this giant black mass that was spreading across the world... Why was he letting the other titans fend for themselves? Was there something else that humans didn't know?
With one accord, the three young pilots hurriedly headed towards Kiryu's hangar. If they couldn't stop Godzilla from continuing his wave of destruction, at least they could go and support the other titans in the world a little.
*************
Meanwhile, in the Hollow Earth, although shaken by the loss of Mikael, Ann's group had continued through the dark and deep jungle, going deeper and deeper into this hidden valley. Jia had gone ahead, as if drawn by something that had caught her attention and by joining her adopted daughter, Ann could also see an incredible discovery... Structures, ancient and covered by vegetation and humidity...
_"Ruins..." Ann breathed, stunned.
_"A human civilization... In the Hollow Earth?" Trapper then said, who joined her and followed by James, the two men also unable to hide their surprise.
Jia continued to contemplate these ruins, pushing aside the vines that covered them to come and touch this ancient stone engraved with symbols of a tribal nature and that she seemed to know by the way she looked at them. Ann noticed and joined her in contemplating these symbols, which, upon closer inspection, also seemed familiar to her... She had seen them elsewhere...
_*These are the symbols of my people.* Jia signed with conviction.
_"Yes, that's it... look..." Ann said, indicating to Trapper and James to come closer. "These engravings are older than those on Skull Island, by at least several centuries... But still, I thought the Iwi were originally from Skull Island... how is it possible that...?"
_"But in that case... what happened to them? This place is completely abandoned." James asked, looking everywhere without seeing any sign of human presence other than theirs.
Ann did indeed wonder and seeing Jia contemplating the remains of a stone arch serving as an entrance to a sort of sanctuary, she guessed that her adopted daughter was asking herself the same question. The group decided to continue further in search of answers to this most important discovery that could call into question everything Monarch thought he knew about the Iwi tribe.
After having to struggle to make their way through very dense vegetation, the group finally arrived in what must have been a courtyard, now invaded by nature that had reclaimed its rights. The presence of pillars, walls and an old stone staircase indicated the path to follow to Jia and the others, who advanced, fascinated and speechless in the middle of this landscape worthy of the greatest adventure novels. James had set his camcorder to film as much of these ancient remains around him as possible, even taking a few screenshots.
Gradually climbing the steps slightly damaged by time, the group arrived at the top of this sanctuary, towards what must have been a ritual room, in a circular shape and a wall adorning the back. However, something abnormal tickled Trapper.
_"Did you see? This place is not covered by vegetation."
Indeed, the moss and climbing plants formed a perfect circle around the ritual room, as if some force was preventing nature from covering this precise place. In the center of this ritual room was a round hole perfectly carved in the stone and connected to several channels extending all around. But it was on the back wall that the discovery was found that left everyone stunned. By pushing aside a few vines, Trapper revealed a mural, revealing the engraving of four very recognizable titans.
_"Godzilla... Mothra... Rodan... and Kong..." Ann whispered in shock.
_"The Four Primordial Titans? In the Hollow Earth?" James added, just as confused.
_"We thought we knew everything about the origins of the titans, but we were way off the mark. Their lineage could go back much further than expected..." said Ann, both shocked and moved to make such a prodigious discovery.
Jia had approached the fresco representing Mothra in turn, touching it with her hand as if to feel a certain energy there, then turned to the others.
_*This place was a temple... A place of worship to the glory of the primordial titans.*
With these words, she also pointed out another thing that she was the only one to have noticed. Lying above the four titans, was another symbol, connecting the four monsters together, like a unique symbiosis, almost resembling... an ice star?
_"It's not possible, I'm dreaming... the symbol of the Titan of Balance..." Ann gasped.
Everyone immediately thought of Elsa who was this famous fifth titan if we were to trust the ancient stories written by Queen Anna during her lifetime and hidden in the hidden room of Arendelle Castle shortly before the revolution that precipitated the fall of the kingdom. However, Elsa was supposed to be the first titan of balance, and surely these ruins dated back to long before she was born... How was that possible ? Certainly, the origin of the five primordial titans seemed much more enigmatic than Monarch thought. Only the Iwi seemed to truly know the full story of these creatures, which was not so surprising given the unique bond they seemed to share with them.
Jia, meanwhile, continued to stare at the ice star symbol of the titan of balance. Although it also reminded her of Elsa, she had also seen this same symbol several times, very quickly, in these dreams/visions... And each time, right after, she had seen this menacing dark ape-like form on a throne, then those inhuman blue eyes glowing in the darkness, surrounded by an aura of intense cold...
While everyone was lost in their thoughts, a small creature, similar to a luminescent dragonfly, came to flutter right in front of Jia's face, who at first surprised, was quickly amused by the insect that then seemed to guide her towards something, landing on a small block of stone that curiously protruded from the wall. The insect began to shine brighter, like an indicator. Jia understood immediately and without hesitation approached to press on the small block of stone.
_"Jia?" said Ann seeing her do it.
_"Uh no wait, you shouldn't..." Trapper wanted to say.
Too late, Jia pushed in the block which turned out to be the trigger for a mechanism, slight muffled noises being heard within the wall and from small openings, water began to flow slowly, gradually filling the channels to then fill the central tank, under the stunned gaze of the group. Then the stream continued to flow from another small canal that ran through the entire temple. Jia then decided to follow the water, like the rest of the group.
_"This is... incredible... A real irrigation system..." James said excitedly and continued to film. "But this is much older than anything we knew... Even older than the Mesopotamians... In fact, the Iwis were the very first!"
Jia had taken the lead and had accelerated her race, distancing the others who had to accelerate to catch up with her through this maze of ruins and vegetation. Then, after a few seconds of running, Ann, James and Trapper finally found Jia, but all of them did not say a word when they saw what the young Iwi was facing. In front of her stood a huge strange wall, an organic blue-green and appearing to be made of a membranous material. The thing seemed almost alive, emitting slight pulses in certain places.
_"What is this thing?" Trapper whispered.
_"The other question is: what could have created such a thing?" Ann added while observing the structure.
_"At this point, it would be extraterrestrial astronauts that it would not surprise me." James admitted.
Trapper dared to approach alongside Jia and Ann, examining very closely the material that composed this barrier and noted that the water continued to flow underneath, indicating the presence of a space on the other side. Trapper even dared to take the risk of touching the wall with his fingertip, which seemed to react and emitted a blueish glow through veinlets.
_"This stuff is organic... Yeah..." Trapper breathed, fascinated. "And listen... a kind of bio-electric buzz. It's like a kind of camouflage."
Jia, for her part, seemed to be the only one to see it but... right in front of her, in a specific point of the wall, the blue glow shone much more intensely, like a signal... Feeling attracted, Jia stretched out her hands and began to spread the membrane, opening a larger and larger passage.
_"Jia... sweetie, what are you doing?! Do you think this is a good idea?" James stammered when he saw her do it.
But Ann reacted differently and then helped her adopted daughter to enlarge the hole even more, under the gaze of Trapper and James. Once the hole was large enough, another grandiose spectacle was revealed to the eyes of the group of explorers, leaving them speechless. Behind this protective barrier, there was another hidden valley, wild, gigantic and magnificent. Huge translucent crystal structures, some almost pyramid-like and hundreds of meters high, rose from the ground and ceiling, adding even more to the otherworldly majesty of the place. A true lost world.
_"By the titans..." James gasped.
Ann almost had tears of joy flowing from her eyes to contemplate such a magnificent place. Her gaze met Jia's.
_*I recognize this place... I saw it in my dreams.* signed the young Iwi.
_"Yes... It must be the source of the signal." Ann confirmed.
_"Let's go see it." Trapper said, determined to continue the adventure and get excited like a child.
The trio then set about enlarging the hole even more to be able to pass, all under the observation of James who remained behind, filming and appearing the least reassured. One by one, they then entered the blinding passage leading them into this valley, the last to enter being James, who took a deep breath before passing, praying with all his being that this decision would not be his death sentence and that of his family.
