Chapter 9 - Past and Future Come Together

Elsa didn't know how long she had been walking, and she didn't care. Knowing perfectly the way to the valley of the trolls, she had not taken the paths that lined the valley and used by people. She was walking now in the middle of this soothing pine forest, finally relieved to no longer feel the suffocating presence of this human futuristic modernity around her and which she had a hard time getting used to despite the weather. She smiled nevertheless looking at the trees, happy to see that despite the technological advancement of this world that she had a hard time recognizing, some corners of nature had remained untouched. Despite the changes in this forest over the centuries, Elsa still managed to recognize it a little, having played there many times with Anna when they were children...

Her gaze was drawn to the branch of one of the trees, where was a small nest made of branches and in which a female bird was busy feeding her hungry babies. This vision, however banal, made Elsa smile gently, bringing her back once again to a very distant memory of her life...

It was during one of the most beautiful springs in Arendelle, precisely a year before Elsa accidentally hurt Anna with her powers. On this bright sunny day, the royal family of Arendelle had decided to walk in the forest, accompanied by some guards to ensure their protection. Childish and carefree, Elsa and Anna laughed together while running after each other, under the loving eyes of King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, seated on a tablecloth for the picnic installed in the small clearing in the middle of the woods.

_"Momma! Papa!" then called Anna.

Agnarr and Iduna came to see, to find their two daughters kneeling in the grass at the foot of a tree, and Elsa holding in her hands a very sick bird. The little animal was trembling, one of its wings broken and seeming to hurt at the level of the belly.

_"We found it near this tree. We must help it otherwise it will die." said Elsa.

Faced with the touching concern of the two girls, Agnarr and Iduna, as adults, nevertheless unfortunately knew that it was too late and showed themselves sorry. Iduna came to take Anna, sad, in her arms, to console her while Agnarr knelt down and came to put his hand gently on Elsa's shoulder.

_"I'm sorry, sweetheart, but there's nothing we can do." confessed the king, sorry but reasonable.

_"What? But... no... I'm sure I can do something, I..." Elsa replied sadly and refusing to see reality, but was interrupted by her father who nonchalantly shook his head to make her understand, what to what, Elsa remained silent and looked down at that dying bird in her hands, feeling utterly helpless.

_"Why? It's unfair. He's innocent." Elsa whispered, her eyes moist.

_"Life is often unfair with the innocent, alas." Agnarr answered sympathetically. "Despite our powers or our status, there are things against which we remain powerless. Death is part of life, Elsa. Being sad is normal, but you must also smile."

_"Smile?" Elsa asked.

_"Yes." Agnarr added with conviction, looking at her. "By smiling at this bird, by bringing it a last comfort before its time, you will allow it to leave this world in the best way... You and Anna had this exceptional capacity: that of showing and expressing the best of humanity, even in the darkest moments."

Elsa came back to reality, still in the middle of this forest and the memory fading in the meanders of her mind. It was so far away, and yet it felt like yesterday. What life did she have, she thought. Last daughter of a lost people, princess adopted by a human royal couple, queen with magical powers to then become an immortal bound forever to the being who came closest to a god in this world... Elsa sighed, as if all the weight of her own long existence had returned to her through her body. She had lost so much, and yet she continued to hold on despite the losses. She could have chosen to cry but didn't, and chose to smile softly as she gazed up at the sky. She didn't regret it and on the contrary considered it incredibly lucky to have had all these people in her life...Anna...Kristoff and Sven...Olaf... she missed them of course, but she would keep smiling, for them.

Her thoughts also returned to her dear king, Godzilla. Although they had only been apart for a day now, it felt like an eternity and it still made her smile. Their bond was so strong that even distance now couldn't break it. He was fine, she could feel it in her heart and she knew it was mutual for him. She prayed, however, that he would stay safe and find what he was looking for, wherever he was in this world. She resumed her silent walk in the middle of the forest, continuing to climb ever higher towards the isolated valley.

A few moments later, Elsa finally arrived in this place which she recognized immediately and which had not changed, nor was soiled by the hand of humans. The Valley of the Trolls. She had been there so many times before and seeing it brought the scent of nostalgia to her being again, but she had to stay focused on the present moment, too much was at stake. The goddess walked, arriving in the middle of this flat and grassy ground, and noticed a thing which left puzzling: all the round rocks, being the trolls when they camouflaged themselves... all had disappeared. She looked around, but no trolls were in sight. Miana and Maina weren't in sight either, which left Elsa perplexed. Did Monarch have incorrect information or did they lie?

_ "It's been a long time, your majesty..."

That voice... that familiar, benevolent and wise voice, which echoed in her ear after so long that she had almost forgotten its sound... Her heart leaping in her chest, Elsa turned around. Emerging from a hole in the ground came a small stone-skinned creature with an old, smiling face and dressed in clothes made of plants. Elsa was shocked for a moment but found a smile on her lips as her gaze met that of this old acquaintance.

_"Grand Pabbie..." she sighed.

The wise old troll smiled at her, his eyes moist with joy to see the former queen of Arendelle again, the latter coming down to her knees in front of him and hugging him.

_"I missed you... I thought I would never see you again..." said Elsa, a tear of joy flowing from her eye.

_"Same for me, your majesty." replied Pabbie, just as happy and touched by this reunion.

_"Grand Pabbie, tell me... What happened? Where are the other trolls?" Elsa then asked, looking around her.

The wise old troll then quickly lost his smile and became sad and silent, which made Elsa fear the worst, and indeed, he confirmed himself from the mouth of Pabbie who did not want to hide the truth from him and explained everything.

_"It happened shortly after the kingdom of Arendelle collapsed and the monarchy disappeared... Humans began to reject old beliefs and change history to suit themselves. So, it's intentional that humanity decided to erase the titans from the collective memory. But not only... everything that was not of the order of the natural according to their convenience had no place in the new world... So the humans eventually found our valley and despite our magic, we were soon overwhelmed by their numbers... I was able to survive, but unfortunately all the others weren't so lucky, and so, I was the last of my people, in a world that was no longer the one we had known."

Pabbie's story left Elsa shocked and speechless beyond measure. Trolls, exterminated by humans? It was terrible. The fall of Arendelle and the monarchy also came back to her mind, having already seen it when this entity, the Outsider, had shown her this vision of the past... The castle and the city of Arendelle attacked by revolutionaries ... Queen Iduna II, daughter of Anna, captured and ruthlessly executed by the rebels, judging her a heretic because like her mother having been a staunch defender of the titans... When it happened, Elsa was in Ahtohallan, already in hibernation in her crystal... Elsa thought she was going to throw up so much she was horrified, knowing that she hadn't been able to do anything to prevent it. As for Godzilla, he too was in Ahtohallan, but in another sense the downfall of a human realm, even Arendelle, was the least of his worries. Elsa was under no illusions. If Godzilla had saved Arendelle all those times it was only because she was there. It might sound selfish of him, but he was a real titan, not a human. His outlook on life was quite different. He was the immortal king of an ancestral ecosystem beyond all comprehension and had to ensure its balance while constantly having to fight against his own inner demons.

Elsa was shot through with a deep anger towards humans, coming from her titan part, which she nevertheless managed to channel within herself, refusing to let her emotions get the better of her.

_"I'm sorry, Pabbie... sincerely sorry... I know what it's like to be the last of your people." Elsa said sympathetically.

_"Yes, even after all these centuries, my heart still bleeds from all those I lost that night, but I choose to stay alive and keep moving forward, in order to honor them, as you do to your way." said the old troll who despite the obvious sadness on his face, continued to smile.

This smile marked Elsa who did not forget the words of her adoptive father Agnarr. Even in the darkest moments, you must never stop smiling and moving forward, because that is what he had wanted to teach her that day. Moments of light and darkness, such is life until the end. _"Nevertheless, my queen, I am not alone. Others have also come to see you." Pabbie then said with a small smile and looked behind Elsa, who turned to see.

Another person she knew had just come up from behind some trees, and smiled at her. It was Jia. The sight of the young teenager Iwi made Elsa's heart leap with joy and she straightened up as Jia, also happy, ran towards the goddess.

_"Jia!" Elsa gasped.

The two hugged each other tightly, almost like a mother hugging her daughter. Pabbie stayed behind a bit, leaving them to their reunion. After the hug, Jia spoke in sign language.

_ *I was sure that we would see each other again. I never doubted it.*

_"Me too." Elsa replied, speaking slowly enough that Jia could read the words on her lips. "I heard what happened at the Monarch Outpost in Hollow Earth and I'm really relieved that you and Kong are safe. I imagine he stayed there. But tell me, Jia... what happened exactly?"

Jia lost her smile but decided to tell what she had seen.

_ *A titan attacked the base, but it was just a diversion...* Jia signed and Elsa managed to understand the signs. *A strange man dressed in black appeared and he kidnapped me and took me to some kind of terrifying cave... He talked about incomprehensible things about the purest blood, about you and me, and also about a power that even gods and demons fear...*

Elsa remained confused about the explanations of the girl Iwi. Pabbie had silently approached to see and looked puzzled too, but her gaze became pensive, doubtful. A strange man dressed in black? A terrifying cave? Pure blood and a power so great it scares even the gods?

_"Jia... I... what does all this mean?" breathed the goddess, lost.

_"I can teach you more." Then said a male voice that broke into the conversation and caught everyone's attention.

Elsa gasped in surprise, seeing a man with long, wavy hair, a tall, muscular body covered in tribal tattoos and holding in one of his hands a kind of giant fish hook made of a bone-like material. Elsa, suspicious, stepped forward and covered her hands with frost, ready to defend the others but Jia grabbed her by the wrist and waved that it was okay, that he was an ally and had helped Kong to save her from the malevolent stranger. Elsa trusted Jia and therefore decided to make disappear the frost off her hands, but remained vigilant despite the man's calm demeanor.

_"Queen Elsa. It's a pleasure to finally meet you in the flesh." then said the man, advancing. "Moana often told me about you after returning to Motunui."

_"Who are you? And how do you know Moana?" Elsa then asked.

_"Maui, demigod of wind and sea." said the man without too much modesty. "I was a very good friend of Moana, and also of Kong. She told me how you had triumphed over evil together... But today, a much greater evil is beating down on us all, I'm afraid."

Elsa could have continued to distrust him, but saw in Jia's eyes that she was confident in him, and that she assured him that there was nothing to fear from him. Elsa could have believed in naivety due to age, but she knew that despite her young age Jia was much more mature and adult than many. This optimism about the nature of people almost reminded her of Anna in a way. And in these troubled times, it was better not to be difficult and to accept the outstretched hands. Elsa then took a step forward and shook Maui's hand.

A while later, reunited and seated on tree stumps, Elsa, Jia, and Pabbie were ready to listen to what the demigod Maui knew about this stranger in black who had tried to abduct Jia.

_"This stranger, I know him, and even very well alas..." Maui said, looking dark. "he is a very ancient dark entity with a past covered in mystery. He is found quoted over several millennia, in different cultures, under many different names, but each time he plays the same role: the embodied evil, with a big E."

This first revelation was enough to make Jia shiver with anguish and Elsa, also uncomfortable, approached her to reassure her a little. Pabbie remained focused on the explanation, but his expression showed that he, too, seemed to recognize the entity Maui was talking about.

_"Impossible to know his exact age or where he comes from, or even what he is precisely." Maui continued. "All we know is that he is the personification of evil. Today, he calls himself the Outsider, but it's only one name among many others... But I know that long ago he was known as Lucanger, the God of Death and son of the Earth."

The god of death? Elsa and Jia were taken aback by this revelation and Pabbie sighed darkly, his worst fear coming true. But from the look Maui gave, Elsa guessed that he wasn't finished and that the worst seemed yet to come.

_"And if only we only had to deal with him... Unfortunately, it's far from being the case..." said the demigod, who seemed for a moment reluctant to continue talking, as if he was scared. "This power capable of frightening gods and demons, he intends to awaken it, through the blood of the chosen guardians of the titans."

Elsa and Jia shared the same confused look but Grand Pabbie abruptly changed her attitude, panting and also showing great fear on his face and walked to Maui.

_"No, it's... it's impossible! He can't do that! He mustn't wake this thing from its prison!" said the old troll fearfully.

_"What? What thing? Explain yourself!" Elsa insisted.

Maui and Pabbie looked at each other, hesitant at first to talk about it but knew that leaving the others in the dark wouldn't help. Maui devoted himself to talking about it.

_"This cave where Jia was taken by the Outsider, is not just a simple cave, but a prison. A prison in which was locked up, a very long time ago, the worst possible abomination, engendered by Lucanger himself. This thing is nothing but the most powerful chaos, destruction, madness and malevolence that can exist and it almost destroyed all traces of life... It caused terror and death in the souls and hearts, even of the gods, so much so that even his name was erased, that the world tried to forget him... This name is... Destoroyah."

The mere mention of this name made shivers of anguish arise and the hearts leap in everyone, as if just its pronunciation was enough to arouse the worst fears. Even powerful beings like Maui and Pabbie seemed frightened just to say that name. Elsa and Jia also felt it in their being.

_"Who is he? A titan?" Elsa then asked.

_"No one can know..." Pabbie answered anxiously. "It is impossible to guess the true nature of such a... thing. He is the ultimate desecration of the natural order, the powers of creation and destruction merged into one. He lives, and yet he is not alive, an empty husk devoid of any resembling a soul. He is cursed with an unending hatred and thirst for violence. Even the evil Ghidorah would seem docile next to him. He is no monster, nor is he a god. He is an abomination beyond mortal imagination. He is death, madness and destruction, all incarnate."

_"The Hollow Earth's Devil. The Crimson Death. The Gods's Ender. The Living Chaos. The Final Doom. The Life's Scourge... So many telltale nicknames given to him that we wish we could erase forever." Maui added.

In front of so many revelations, Elsa had to take a few moments to analyze everything in her head, but the anxiety which grew in her following the mention of the name of Destoroyah complicated things.

_"But then... how was he imprisoned?" she asked.

_"Let me show you." replied Pabbie, who used her magic to transcend the laws of time and placed her hands on Elsa and Jia's foreheads to show them what had happened, a very long time ago...

A huge flash occurred, blinding them for a moment and suddenly the two girls found themselves in front of an apocalyptic vision... The jungles of the Hollow Earth were in flames, the water of the rivers boiled and evaporated, the mountains had been reduced to pieces... A monstrous storm was ravaging the area... Thousands of dead animals were lying everywhere... The titans, much younger at that time, Mothra, Rodan and Kong were visible, all alive but on the ground, their bodies covered in horrible wounds and barely able to stand... Mothra moaned in pain as Rodan, a wounded wing, crawled up to her to try to support her... Kong clenched his teeth, his mouth bleeding , on one knee, roared in pain as he tucked his dislocated wrist back into place.

Godzilla, also younger, was there too, but on his knees in the middle of this devastated landscape. The young titan was holding the body of a young female blue dragon in his paws and she too looked in very bad shape. Despite the pain and tears, she looked Godzilla in the eyes lovingly and smiled at him, touching his cheek with her paw.

_"I love you, my Goji...my soul and my power will live forever through you...save us...save us all, that's what you were born for." she moaned in pain, before closing her eyes and breathing her last into Godzilla's arms.

The female dragon's dead body then turned into water which flowed through the fingers of Godzilla, who on his knees and helpless watched the water evaporate into the earth before him. Behind him, a few feet away in a huge cloud of black smoke produced by the fire, a towering, horned, winged form stomped forward, its frightening red eyes gleaming through the smoke. Godzilla stood for a moment without doing anything, his head bowed, as if he had given up.

But Godzilla's fists clenched, and his whole body began to shake with growing rage and his spines began to glow brighter and brighter. Raising his head suddenly, his cheeks covered with tears, the gaze of the young titan became filled with unparalleled fury, his eyes becoming blue and shining. With a deafening roar and rage, he spat an atomic blast upwards, letting all his anger and pain explode, to the point of shaking the earth for miles. Godzilla then turned and while roaring began to charge towards the huge demonic form in the black smoke, which in turn emitted an abominable roar and seemed to be waiting for the young king with a firm footing to confront him...

The vision stopped and Elsa and Jia gasped, brought back to reality and the present moment as Pabbie pulled back, visibly tired from the magical effort and sat down for a moment on the ground to catch her breath. Elsa, like Jia, had been marked by what they had seen in this vision from the past. Elsa felt particularly bad and sorry for Godzilla, and for this young female dragon that she didn't know and yet had seemed to mean a lot to him. Who was she? Maui came over to the two girls.

_"Do you understand now why it is imperative that what you have seen does not happen again?"

But suddenly, as he spoke, Maui was violently hit by a blast of black lightning that caused him to scream in pain and the demigod fell heavily unconscious face down as everyone looked on in surprise and horror. But the fear intensified when the Outsider showed up, advancing with a sure step.

_"Ah, poor Maui, he always had a knack for exaggerating things." The Outsider commented snidely.

_"Jia, behind me!" Elsa said immediately, putting the Iwi girl behind her to protect her and preparing an ice spell with her hands.

_"Elsa... go with Jia. I'll hold him back!" Pabbie then stepped forward and stood in front of the two girls and facing the Outsider.

_"But...Pabbie..."

_"It's an order! Go ahead!"

In front of this scene, the Outsider could not help laughing.

_"Ah, dear Pabbie. It's been a long time. And you really think some poor old troll like you is going to stop me?... How insulting..."

With those cold, dark words, Lucanger moved at a speed so fast that a blink of an eye would have been slower, and with the aid of a black blade summoned by his magic, the dark entity pierced violently the body of Pabbie and lifted him off the ground, to the horrified eyes of Elsa and Jia.

_"PABBIE!" yelled Elsa.

_"E...Elsa...run..." moaned the old troll in pain, before his whole body fractured and crumbled into a thousand pieces, under the merciless gaze of Lucanger, who then turned his gaze to the two girls.

They wanted to flee, but Jia was torn from Elsa's arms by a powerful telekinetic force and brought directly to Lucanger who held the young girl Iwi by the neck. Elsa, with tears in her eyes at Grand Pabbie's horrific death without her being able to do anything, but also furious, wanted to cast a spell but was stopped in her move by Lucanger who made a short black blade appear in his hand and threatened Jia with.

_"My dear Elsa, things are very simple..." explained Lucanger with a detached and contemptible air. "You calm down and decide to come with me, or else I'll slit Jia's pretty little throat. Dead or alive, it's the same for me. I only need your blood. Choose well."

_"You're a monster! I'm going to destroy you!" Elsa roared.

_"Words, words, nothing but words..." replied Lucanger sadistically with a smile. "So make up your mind, my patience has limits."

The black blade came dangerously close to Jia's throat, who was in tears and dared not move. Elsa was fuming with her whole being, but knew she couldn't afford to risk Jia's life. She had no right. Resigned and dejected, Elsa unclenched her fists, giving up, much to Lucanger's satisfaction.

_"Well, you see... you can be reasonable." he said slyly.

Elsa barely had time to realize that Lucanger hit her with a blast of black lightning. Elsa screamed in pain before falling to the ground, stunned by this magical attack. Jia let out a silent cry of dread and wanted to struggle energetically, but Lucanger knocked her out too with a small blast of lightning. Now having the two chosen ones at his mercy, the god of death allowed himself to savor his victory.

_"Alright... it's time to go. There's a big comeback to celebrate." he shouted in a treacherous laugh.

From the forest and having observed the whole scene, Shego remained hidden and knowing that she could not do anything against this man who seemed really powerful, she decided to quickly move away and activated her communicator to join Monarch.

_"Emerald Blade on report, can you hear me?" she said. "We have a huge problem."
