Chapter 2 - In the Hollow Earth

Late morning had just arrived, though it was unknown if the schedule was the same in Hollow Earth as on the surface now. The thick, prehistoric jungle had been awake for a while, cohorts of pterosaurs fluttering between mountains in the distance. A few animals, such as stegosaurus, triceratops or brontosaurs, were peacefully grazing among the tropical trees and in the wide grassy plains.

At the outpost of Monarch established on the territory, all the personnel continued their work as in a day become usual in this place however surreal. As usual, the armed guards continued their patrols on the watchtowers, making sure that the electrified fences work and prevent the intrusions of possible predators.

In the main building, regrouping all the biological analysis laboratories, but also the control and monitoring rooms of the site and its surroundings, Doctor Ann Possible, the head of this outpost, was finishing the check- up of the latest analyzes on a holo-tablet. Around her in the control room, dozens of Monarch agents, men and women in uniform, sat behind holographic screens and worked. Ann then looked up from her tablet and checked the main giant screen again, projecting a satellite image of the area, and indicating in red a massive life form on the move, identified as Kong.

_ "Well? Nothing strange to report?" Ann asked to the agents.

_ "Nothing at all, doctor." replied an agent. "Kong is very calm. He continues to patrol his territory. The titans Gamera and Baragon have been located further away, but they are also calm and careful to not enter Kong's area."

Ann smiled softly at these explanations.

_"Anyway, Kong would have quickly made them understand who's boss. That's the advantage of being an alpha titan." she said.

An armed guard arrived in the room and Ann, who had been expecting his arrival, turned to him.

_"So? Another one, right?" she said seeing the serious and closed face of the soldier.

_"Yes Madam." replied the soldier. "Other skull crawlers attacked the southern fence that night, but fortunately none made it through."

_ "It's really strange..." Ann sighed, scratching the back of her head. "A month ago all wildlife, even predators, were normal and ignoring us. And now more than five carnivore attacks in just two weeks. It's like they've gone mad."

_ "It's consistent with the fact that Kong has drastically increased his patrols of his territory since two weeks ... It's as if he's sensed this brutal change as well." then said the guard.

It was certain, thought Ann. Since the clash between Godzilla and Kong and the establishment of the reigns of the two kings on the same planet, the balance of the world had changed drastically. The titans were the closest beings to nature, and nothing abnormal happened without them feeling it. This connection with the land and nature would never cease to amaze her. Some time ago, Henri Serizawa said that like every organism, planet earth develops defenses, as a human body would. The titans were acting like the earth's immune system, that was more than certain. And when a virus is attacking, the remedy goes on the strike back.

_ "By the way... Where's Jia?" Ann asked.

_"Still in her little sanctuary, in full exercise." replied the guard.

In an isolated section of the western sector of the outpost, there was a natural corner that had not been touched by the constructions of Monarch. A small lake, surrounded by rocks and trees, and where there was also a small waterfall.

Sitting on a flat rock in the middle of the lake, Jia was more than focused. Sitting cross-legged, her eyes closed and her head erect, she had been meditating for more than an hour now without having moved a single muscle. Although deaf and depriving herself of her sight by closing her eyes, she relied on her remaining senses to become one with the elements around her.

Then, feeling that strength that lived within her balance itself perfectly in her focus, Jia, without opening her eyes, slowly extended one of her hands forward. The water in the lake in front of her began to tremble gently, then little by little, a thin serpentine column of water rose as if by magic, gradually coming towards the teenager's hand. Jia smiled softly in her meditation, managing to feel that it was working and continued. With very light and slow movements of her fingers, Jia moved the small column of water, making it levitate and spin around her. Just like the spirit of Moana told her in her dreams. But very soon, the mental effort of controlling this power caused Jia to release her concentration, with the water eventually falling back into the lake. Panting a little, Jia paused, running her hand over her sweaty forehead. She then felt a presence behind her and turned around, seeing Ann who had just arrived and who smiled at her, applauding her for what she had just done.

_ *Well done. You're starting to master your gift.* Ann said in sign language.

_*It takes a lot of effort and I get tired very quickly.* Jia replied. *Moana keeps coming to me in my dreams to teach me and she tells me that over time and as I grow older, I will get stronger, like my control.*

Ann listened and came to sit next to Jia at the edge of the small lake, admiring the waterfall. She had already seen Jia tell her who this woman was, or rather this spirit named Moana and who seemed linked to her. At first, Ann was worried but Jia reassured her that Moana was someone she could trust, just like Elsa. But despite that, Ann couldn't hold back another worry.

_*I want you to be very careful.* Ann signed to her adopted daughter. *You are strong and brave, Jia, but this power... I wouldn't want it to put you in danger.*

_* I'll be careful, mom, I promise. Besides, as long as Kong is here, nothing can happen to us.* Jia affirmed with a smile.

Ann smiled back, moving closer to Jia and giving her a kiss on the forehead.

_*Come on, that's enough for today. Let's go back.* Ann said, to which Jia stood up and took her mother by the hand, leading her back to the main center of the outpost.

Once back in the wing of the building serving as quarters for Ann and Jia, the two girls prepared food for lunch, even though the schedule in the Hollow Earth seemed to be out of step with the surface. Ann also decided to turn on the laptop, which was hooked up to a powerful Monarch transmitter that allowed her to Skype with her daughter Kim in Middleton. A tab appeared on the screen and Kim appeared, sitting on her bed in her bedroom, dressed in a nightgown. The teenager smiled as she saw her mother and adoptive sister wave to her, knowing they were thousands of miles below the surface of the earth.

_ "Hi sweetheart." Ann said. "Ah, I see it's the start of the night in Middleton."

_ "Yeah, I admit I'm exhausted." Kim replied with a chuckle, also doing sign language at the same time as speaking so that Jia would understand. "Ron managed to piss Mr. Barkin off again, not on purpose of course."

Jia chuckled at this anecdote, trying to picture the scene in her head. Ann shook her head slightly in spite, but smiled nonetheless. This Ron, he would never cease to amaze her. It made her wonder how he could have been accepted as a pilot in Monarch's Jaeger program.

_ "And by the way, how's Kong? Or I guess that's top secret information?" Kim asked with a slightly teasing tone towards her mother and Jia.

_ *He's a little restless at the moment, it's true, but basically, he's doing very well. By the way Kim, I managed to perfect my training today. I can last almost three minutes now.* replied Jia.

_ "Really? Oh, I'm really happy for you, Jia." replied Kim with a frank smile. "But it's not surprising, you're a gifted. And then, you're a Possible, and for us, nothing is impossible."

Jia was touched by these words. Even though she had been adopted by the Possibles, she felt blessed to be seen as a true member of the family. She couldn't have found a better foster family.

_ "Well, I'm going to go to sleep now. It's been a long day and I have to get up early tomorrow." Kim said rubbing her eyes.

_ "Okay. And Kim...most of all, be very careful of yourself. You know I don't like the idea of knowing that you and Ron are piloting this huge monstrous machine. I don't understand how James could accept."

_ "Mom, please..." Kim sighed, obviously showing that she didn't want to argue with her mother about this again. "You know very well why I chose to become a Jaeger pilot... When I was in Hong Kong, when I saw these titans fighting against each other... for the very first time in my life I felt felt completely overwhelmed, helpless... Yes, I may be Kim Possible, I may have saved the world many times, but this was totally different... We have to accept the fact that this world and its rules have changed, and it's up to us to adapt."

Ann sighed, but knew her daughter was right. Since the return of the titans to the human reality, many things had changed in today's society. The human, being dominant at the top of the most advanced technology had suddenly been relegated to the rank of dominated creature, in a world that had never belonged to him. Cultist groups had been created, celebrating the return of the titans as the true masters of the world, others openly expressed their desire to see the titans be exterminated because they were threats... In addition, the activities of this terrorist organization, Hydra, was seriously starting to grow and Monarch was getting more and more discredited in people's eyes...

_ "Good night, Kim." Ann said simply with a forced smile to hide her stress.

_ "Goodbye mom. Goodbye Jia." Kim replied, not being fooled by her mother's stress and the video cut off.

Jia remained concerned about how the video had ended, although it had started in a good mood. Ann sighed softly, running her hands over her face, feeling the fatigue of all the stress about her family members. She had almost lost them all in Hong Kong and she never wanted to experience such a feeling again. She looked for a moment at a framed photo on the kitchen table. A family photo with her, James, Kim, the twins Jim and Tim, then Jia, all together and smiling. Ann smiled, remembering that this photo was taken shortly after Jia was officially adopted by the Possibles. One of the few times the whole family was reunited in recent years. Today she was there, in the Hollow Earth, while James remained on the surface, as well as Kim. Jim and Tim meanwhile had stayed at Middleton High School for their studies.

She then felt Jia's small hand gently take hers, and the girl smiled at her in support. Ann smiled back and came over to kiss her forehead.

But suddenly, the general alert siren sounded throughout the base, stopping all the personnel in their work. Ann and Jia gasped in surprise, then barely had they got up when a base scientist and colleague of Ann's came running into the apartment, looking panicked.

_"Alex, what's going on?!" Ann asked.

_"The underground radars have detected something approaching our position from the ground. It's huge, organic and with a high level of radiation... No doubt, it's a titan!"

The man handed the sensor results to Ann, who examined them on the holo-tablet. Indeed, the radar did show a huge but impossible to identify shape approaching faster and faster just below the base. Ann and Jia's hearts leaped in their chests.

_"Evacuate the central building, quickly!" ordered Ann, who without waiting took Jia by the hand and the three of them rushed out of the apartment.

The evacuation order was given through the loudspeakers and the personnel hurried towards the emergency exits provided for this purpose. During this time, everyone could feel that the ground under the building began to shake harder and harder.

Ann and Jia, still holding hands, had been able to exit the building through one of the exits and walked away, but saw in horror half of the building being brutally and suddenly destroyed from below, by the emergence of a gigantic form from the ground. Ann scooped Jia up in her arms and leapt up, rolling on the ground to narrowly avoid building debris that was thrown around. The personnel who hadn't been able to evacuate in time didn't stand a chance and were totally swept away by the passage of the creature which caused real carnage, collapsing more than half of the building around it. In shock, the two girls, coming to their senses, suddenly saw the giant creature gradually rising from the still smoking ruins of the base's central building.

It was to be 55 meters high and 70 meters long. Its form was that of a huge theropod-like dinosaur, like a monstrous allosaurus, with scaly green-black skin, reptilian yellow eyes, a huge head with a carnivorous jaw, powerful hind legs and a long thick tail almost forming a whip at the end.

Jia remained frightened, remaining snuggled up against Ann who stared at this thing in fear. Although the detectors had not been able to identify this titan, Ann recognized it because having studied with munitie all the old legends and beliefs on the titans and had been able to list some of them long forgotten...

_ "Gorosaurus..." Ann breathed, terrified.

Gorosaurus. One of the most misunderstood titans because the old traces concerning him were more than rare. According to certain cave paintings found in caves, he may have been venerated by certain tribes during the Neolithic era. Monarch had been looking for him for a long time, and finally, this was where he had been hiding for thousands of years.

Still carrying Jia in her arms and surrounded by the chaos that reigned in the base, Ann gazed at the titan while stepping back. Gorosaurus, standing amidst the ruins of its carnage, showed a mad eye, mouth salivating, and let out a fierce roar. But suddenly, another roar sounded, like a hostile response against Gorosaurus and attracting his attention.

From the top of a cliff that overlooked the Monarch outpost, the massive and powerful form of Kong emerged, his ax in his hand. Hope then returned to the faces of Jia and Ann. Seeing the damage to the human base and the hostile presence of this titan, Kong glared, growling and roaring again as he punched his chest and brandished his ax as a sign of strength. In response, Gorosaurus snapped its tail like a whip and roared at the giant gorilla. the confrontation being inevitable, Ann carried Jia and began to run to get as far away as possible from the fight which was going to ensue. With his keen eye, Kong could see in the distance the familiar shapes of Ann and Jia moving away to safety. Good, he thought. At least he wouldn't have to hold back.
