Chapter 16 - What the Future Holds...

Credits song : Somewhere I Belong from Linkin Park

The fight was over, but the city of Hong Kong had just suffered colossal damage as well as the death of many people, although most of the population was able to survive thanks to the effectiveness of the anti-Titan shelters.

The members of the Monarch organization had joined without further delay to bring assistance to the military, police and medical forces which were working to rummage through the debris of the ruins of the buildings to try to find possible survivors, and indeed, several people injured but alive could be rescued under the rubble.

Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable had left Simmons HQ to return to the city center and see the extent of the damage caused by this clash of titans. As they both walked through the crowd of people gathered, Kim saw in the distance, in surprise, people she knew very well.

Jia, Ann, and James were all sitting on a broken building, slowly recovering from what had just happened, Jia cuddled up against her adoptive mother. Ann and James were holding hands again, and upon noticing it, smiled at each other, completely forgetting about those past squabbles that had driven them apart.

_*You know Jia. You are a really cowardly girl and I am proud to be your adoptive father.* James signed, convinced he had said "brave" instead of "cowardly".

Jia looked at Ann and both of them shared a rather amused smile. Knowing that he had been wrong and that his intention was good, Jia came to snuggle up to James, who hugged her, while Ann could not suppress an amused chuckle at the fact that her husband still had not noticed the mistake he had just made with the signed word.

_ "What? Did I say something funny?" James asked then, confused, seeing his wife laughing.

_ "I'll explain later, my love..." she answered. "But you really need to improve your knowledge of sign language."

_"MOM! DAD! JIA!" then called a female voice that they recognized immediately.

They turned in unison and with the greatest amazement on their faces, saw their daughter running up to them, her eyes moist and relieved to see them alive.

_"KIM!" Ann and James gasped together, also relieved.

Kim threw herself into the arms of her parents who hugged her with strength and love. Jia smiled happily to see her "adoptive big sister" again, because even though the two of them didn't know each other very well and had hardly ever seen each other in person due to Ann's post at Skull Island's Monarch confinement post, Kim and Jia had been able to communicate a few times via webcam. Kim knelt down and hugged Jia. Meanwhile, Ron had come to Kim's parents.

_"Uh, you know Mr. and Mrs. Possible, it was your daughter's idea at first, I never wanted..." he began to stammer as if to justify himself.

_ "Oh shut up Ron and come here." James exclaimed happily and hugged Ron.

After this shared hug between sisters, Jia took Kim by the hand and excited like a little girl, absolutely wanted to show her something, which Kim agreed and followed her, and asked Ron to come too. At the same time, Ann and James Possible saw two people they knew coming to them.

_ "Excellent work, Dr. Possible. I heard that the Hollow Earth mission was a success." said Henri Serizawa, accompanied by Dr. Lewis, addressing Ann.

_"Success, it may be exaggerated." Ann answered modestly. "We have certainly made the discovery of the millennium, but everything is now buried forever."

_"We will find the time and the means, doctor, while of course taking care to respect this heritage that has been transmitted to us." Serizawa added more confidently. "As for you, James Possible, I know you worked for Monarch in the past. I would like to reinstate you, if that's okay with you."

Meanwhile, Jia had led Kim and Ron to a corner of the ruins farther from the crowd of people, and what the two teenagers saw left them speechless, amazed. Kong was there, sitting against the remains of a building, tired, injured, but alive. The titan turned and lowered his head, showing a smile and expressing a small grunt happy to see Jia, but was also curious about the presence of the other two humans with her.

_*Kong, this is my sister Kim Possible, and her friend Ron Stoppable. They are nice. They are part of my family.* Jia signed at the giant gorilla to explain.

Kong groaned softly again, looking at Kim and Ron who didn't dare move too much in front of this huge ape-like creature watching them closely, feeling its breath on their faces. The titan then signed the word "Family" with his giant hand.

_ "That's...so cool..." Ron breathed in fascination.

_*Jia... You know how to communicate with him by signs?* Kim then asked in amazement and being sure what she has just seen.

_*Yes.* Jia replied proudly. *He learned on his own and he is very talented. He is my friend and I love him.*

Kim smiled tenderly at her foster sister's explanation and both chuckled as Ron jumped back in surprise after he tried to touch Kong's muzzle with his hand and the gorilla huffed. loudly through the nostrils, but not hostile towards the young man. Kong then looked up and gave another friendly grunt to a fourth person who arrived and approached the trio. Kim, Ron, and Jia all smiled. It was Elsa, also smiling and looking first at Kong, giving him a look full of gratitude for what he had done. The goddess then looked towards Kim and Ron.

_ "I knew you would succeed." Elsa said sincerely.

_"We too, we did not doubt you." replied Kim.

Elsa then knelt beside Jia, who more than delighted to see Elsa again, snuggled up against her, and the goddess hugged her gently. Elsa clearly felt that the bond between Kong and Jia had strengthened, but also that a force had just awakened in the young girl... A familiar force. After the hug, Elsa looked Jia in the eye, gently taking her by the hands, and knowing that the little girl could read lips, spoke very slowly.

_ "I'm proud of you, guardian." Elsa said proudly.

SKKKREEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOGGGGHH!

This roar of great power and easily recognizable broke the calm that had settled, making everyone jump in fear and turn around. Only Elsa remained perfectly calm and looked as if expecting this. Kong also showed no fear, but grew nervous and wary again, scrambling to his feet and quickly picking up his axe, growling fiercely.

Godzilla had risen, his body covered in wounds, but despite that, the king of the monsters was able to move and seemed to have regained some strength. Under the frightened and worried eyes of everyone, Godzilla advanced, then stopped several dozen meters from Kong, who brandishing his ax, roared against the reptile, as if to answer him that if he wanted to fight again he was ready. Faced with the tension that still reigned between the two titans, Elsa turned to Jia, and held out a hand to accompany her. Knowing now what she had to do and no longer having fear or doubts about her abilities, Jia accompanied Elsa.

Kim and Ron joined Ann and James, who in turn saw Jia, along with Elsa, heading towards the place that separated the two titans.

_"Jia!" Ann gasped, but was gently restrained by Kim.

_ "Wait mum. Trust her."

Holding hands, under the gaze of the whole dumbfounded crowd, Elsa and Jia had advanced and stood together side by side between the two gigantic creatures. Kong was really on guard, his ax in hand and growling heavily. Godzilla was also growling, his reptilian golden eye also showing some animosity towards the other, but much more tenuous and thoughtful than before. The two monsters faced each other with equal strength and conviction, making this face to face of a tension to cut with a knife as much it was palpable.

Elsa then brought Jia up to Godzilla, who seeing his queen coming to him, bent down and approached his huge head to the ground. Jia, at first very intimidated by the reptilian titan, looked towards Elsa who made him understand that she had absolutely nothing to fear and invited her to touch him. Jia, hesitant at first, did so then, gently and timidly coming to rest her palm against the monster king's muzzle, feeling that hard and warm scaly skin under his skin. Godzilla let out a low, neutral growl, letting her do. Kong meanwhile was worried to see Jia so close to Godzilla, but saw very well that the latter had no intention of hurting her.

Following this contact, Elsa took Jia by the hand and returned with her to the center of the two titans while Godzilla stood up in all his stature and majesty. Holding hands, Elsa and Jia together resonated their invisible but very much alive bonds with their respective titans, becoming one and gradually restoring the balance that had been on the verge of being shattered forever. Looking at each other, then looking at those thousands of little beings, those humans they had protected from destruction, the two titans no longer showed any aggression towards each other. They knew it now. This fight, this war had lasted too long and had already cost too much, not only to them, but could also have cost this world which was theirs and which they were responsible for protecting at all costs.

Kong looked at his ax still imbued with the glowing and powerful energy of the atomic breath, but finally gave up using it, and without hesitation, while looking towards Godzilla, dropped this weapon, however a symbol of war, on the ground, as a sign of stopping the fight and asking for peace.

Faced with this gesture, Godzilla acted in turn and expressed a powerful and firm roar that echoed for miles around, loudly proclaiming as king of the monsters the end of this war and peace between him and his rival. After the roar, Godzilla even gave Kong a slight nod and a growl, as if telling him: "You may not have won the fight, but you've earned my respect. I'm telling you, one legend to another." Kong understood and nodded too with some respect.

Both Elsa and Jia smiled, happy that they could allow their respective kings to find peace. Kim, Ron, Ann, James, Serizawa, Lewis, and the entire crowd watched in silence and with some admiration what turned out to be the end of a millennial war between two true living legends. However, despite this cessation of hostilities, Godzilla had made one thing clear to Kong: he remained the absolute alpha and Kong should know how to stay in his place, in the Hollow Earth, such was the king's will.

With peace now proclaimed, Elsa hugged Jia one last time, like one sister to another.

_ "Goodbye Jia. It was a pleasure and an honor to meet you." said Elsa.

_*Will I see you again one day?* asked Jia, moved.

_ "I promise you." Elsa replied, gently tapping the tip of the little girl's nose with her finger.

Jia smiled, then told the goddess something she hadn't expected:

_ *Moana salute you, Elsa.*

Moana... A name that brought back distant and happy memories in Elsa... The memories of a worthy and strong guardian, but also of a friend whom she had unfortunately only known a little but whom she knew enough to know that she was a noble soul. Anobility and benevolence that Jia had inherited.

After these touching goodbyes, Elsa joined Godzilla, who bent down again, taking his queen in his hand and helping her climb up onto his head. Once again, Godzilla let out a final mighty roar, then turned around and with a heavy, slow step began his walk towards the ocean. All witnessed the departure of the god and goddess in the greatest silence. Jia was joined by Kim, Ron, Ann and James, all together contemplating this departure, and behind them, Kong also remained silent, gazing respectfully at this enemy turned ally. From the King of the Monsters' head, Elsa took one last look behind her, smiling and raising her hand in a final goodbye to her newfound friends. Godzilla meanwhile did not look back and gradually sank into the ocean. Elsa seated on his back against one of the spines, Godzilla swam away, slowly drifting away until he disappeared completely over the horizon, he and his queen now returning home, together and united, to Ahtohallan.

With the death of Walter Simmons, collapsed what was left of APEX and its clandestine installations around the world. The Monarch organization confiscated all technology developed by APEX. The discovery of the creation of the Mechagodzilla had triggered waves of suspicion concerning possible hidden arms trafficking around the world, or other clandestine organizations creating other artificial monsters. But also, the fight between Godzilla and Kong caused a lot of ink to flow and made a lot of talk around the world, unfortunately accentuating the fear that humanity felt in the face of the immeasurable power of these giant monsters of divine stature seeming to reign over this world. But with fear and awe also came admiration, with other people loudly proclaiming their support for the giant monsters and their usefulness on earth. Heavy and heated debates on the question of the titans would be to come. Monarch increased surveillance of their titan containment sites around the world. After the Battle of Hong Kong, Godzilla and Elsa were not seen again, but Monarch knew where they had returned and watched them from a distance. As for Kong, he too was not seen again, and the world's population also does not know where he is today.

In his office, Henri Serizawa was busy checking the latest records for the containment sites, especially those of the specimens Titanus Rodan and Titanus Mosura, which had recently shown signs of unusual activity, despite the fact that these two specimens were believed to be in a state of hibernation.

It was then that Professor James Possible entered the office, carefully holding a folder in his hands. Serizawa was waiting for her to come and invited her to sit in front of the desk.

_ "Very well, James. What project did you want to talk to me about?" Serizawa asked attentively.

_"As you know, since the peace between Godzilla and Kong was established, increasingly frequent signs of unusual activity appear among the other confined titans. This peace has made itself known, it is spreading like a wildfire, and while some see it as a benefit to our world, yet unknown and less friendly titans may take a dim view of this new alliance. The titans have always protected us, but we need to do more. The world is changing, and it is time for humanity to join the guardian titans in the defense of the earth."

Serizawa raised an eyebrow, intrigued and listening intently as James placed the folder on the desk and looked more than confident. On the yellow cover of the folder were written these black letters: Project Jaeger.

***********

It had now been a week since the Hong Kong incident took place. Drakken was dead, and Shego had been arrested and taken away for trial, but there were rumors that she escaped but nothing was sure yet.

At her home in the small town of Middleton, Colorado, Kim was getting ready for the special night ahead: the high school prom, which she had decided to go with Ron. Dressed in an elegant prom dress of a sky blue color, white heeled shoes and a necklace adorned with a small midnight blue opal around her neck, Kim looked at herself in the mirror of her room, finishing checking one last time her red hair done impeccably in a ponytail. Once done, Kim returned to her laptop which was turned on and currently connected to a webcam.

_"So how am I?" Kim asked.

In the small screen, Ann and Jia appeared, side by side, being in a bedroom and both smiling.

_ "You look so beautiful, Kim." said her mother, moved.

_*You look like a real princess like that.* Jia signed.

Kim was touched and sent her a kiss through the screen.

_ "I really wish we were here for tonight, but with everything going on right now with Monarch, the titans, I..."

_ "Mom, I know, don't worry, I totally understand." replied Kim. "That's what being a Possible is, right Jia?"

The little girl answered with a firm nod and a proud smile. Kim and Ann shared a non-meaningful chuckle at such enthusiasm. Kim was really proud of her adoptive little sister. Jia was still very young, but she looked so grown up now. Kim almost recognized herself in her, when she was her age. But to be bond to a titan by something sacred, mystical and impossible to explain in words... She dared not imagine the weight and the responsibility that must entail. She also had a thought for this incredible woman, Elsa, and Godzilla, knowing that they were there, somewhere in this vast world, ready to defend it at all times, and it reassured Kim to know that this divine couple was watching.

A little later in the evening, the prom had just begun, taking place in the large common room, decorated for the occasion. All the students and teachers had come, all dressed appropriately for the party. Tables covered with white tablecloths were arranged in one corner, offering various things to drink and eat for the guests. A sound system had been installed, as well as a disco ball on the ceiling.

Ron had come dressed in a light blue tuxedo with a dark blue bow tie. He arrived hand in hand with Kim in the room, for all to see. Immediately, all eyes were on them and cheers rang out, except for Bonnie, Kim's rival. News of the Battle of Hong Kong and the reappearance of the titans had traveled around the world quickly, and everyone in high school had learned that Kim and Ron were there.

The beginning of the evening went well and Kim and Ron found themselves sitting at one of the tables, chatting with Monique, Kim's best friend. Monique had taken out her cell phone and was watching one of the youtube videos of the Hong Kong incident which had gone viral in a very short time, and showed Godzilla and Kong facing each other in the middle of the buildings, just before they fight.

_"It's really... mind-blowing." commented Monique. "And even terrifying I admit. Have you seen them up close?"

_"Hmm, rather close yes." Kim replied, remembering the rather eventful first encounter with Godzilla at the APEX factory in Pensacola, and then the encounter with Kong after the battle. "And Ron wasn't even scared of Kong, when he usually hates monkeys."

_"This is not the same." Ron retorted as he ate. "Kong is a friend of Jia, and friends of my friends are my friends."

_"I don't really know what to think..." Monique said sincerely, looking again at the video of the two monsters, which gave her a slight shiver. "To think that now giant monsters live among us, at this very moment. I will have trouble sleeping."

_ "Oh believe me." Kim told her to reassure her. "On the contrary, it is rather thanks to them that we can sleep without fear."

Monique had a hard time believing that, but saw that Kim sincerely believed in what she was saying.

The rather dynamic music for the moment, ended to be replaced by another, much softer, melodic, announcing the beginning of a slow. Hesitant at first and very shy, Ron cleared his throat and rose from his chair.

_"Hum... Do you dance, Kim?" he asked, holding out his hand like a gentleman.

_"With pleasure." she replied with a smile and took his hand.

Under the tender eyes of Monique and Rufus remaining at the table, Kim and Ron went to the dance floor where other couples were already, and at first very shyly, began to dance together, looking each other in the eye. They had been on so many adventures together to save the planet, but last week this adventure could have been the very last with the stakes that had been played on it. Knowing that they could have lost each other, Kim and Ron somehow grew closer, and they both felt it. As they slow danced together, Kim and Ron closed their eyes, their foreheads touching very gently and their embrace, timid at first, slowly tightened into something more heartfelt.

Then, opening their eyes again, their gazes meeting, they knew it, without needing to say a single word. Yes, they were no longer afraid to admit it. They both wanted it. Not being just friends anymore... Smiling with love at each other, their faces came together and their lips met tenderly and delicately in a first kiss, thus sealing the beginning of their relationship as a couple.

************

Monarch had managed to bring teams and facilities to the Hollow Earth, which had now become the new territory of Kong who now ruled there as king. Jia, along with Ann, had both moved into the monitoring station, and Ann had been designated by Serizawa as the main leader in charge of the site. Coming out of the main building built in the middle of the jungle, Ann, accompanied by Jia, took her walkie-talkie.

_ "Okay guys, get ready. It's time for his morning walk." warned Ann.

Suddenly, the earth shook briefly as Kong came heavily to the ground. The giant gorilla, free to move, turned his gaze and smiled at Jia, who smiled back at him, happy and fulfilled to see him live again. Kong confirmed this thought with a small sign meaning "Home." to which Jia smiled even more.

More loud roars were heard and the other two titans living in the Hollow Earth, Gamera and Baragon, came to the area, but remained calm and did not attack the humans. Kong looked at them, roaring in turn as if to answer them and struck his chest, to which, the two titans responded with a sign of submission, indicating that they were obeying the new king.

Jia then watched Kong go for his daily walk, seeing him leap with agility and strength to climb the nearest mountain, to stand on its peak, looking around and again expressing his kingship by thumping his chest and roaring with pride and power. Jia then looked at her feet, seeing in the reflection of the small stream, the brief image of Moana appearing at her, smiling at her and nodding her head, before disappearing immediately. Jia smiled softly, silently thanking her ancestor, and looked back at Kong, confident of the future that would present itself.

************

Following a request from Elsa, Serizawa had Arendelle Castle, which had long since become a historic tourist site in the city, taken over by Monarch and no longer considered as a museum.

Dressed in modern civilian clothes to avoid being noticed, Elsa, accompanied by Henri Serizawa, entered this large room which she recognized immediately, which had been the throne room. The floor, the tapestries, the walls, the windows... Everything had been kept identical. This vision was a real pinch in the heart of Elsa, who had not been back here for... a very, very long time...

_ "I... Thank you, Mr. Serizawa." she said, her throat a little constricted with emotion.

_ "I'm going to leave you alone. If you need anything, I'm outside." replied the Japanese man with understanding and left, closing the doors behind him.

Elsa, now alone, surveyed in silence and with a look filled with sadness and nostalgia this great throne room in which she had spent so many happy years. She saw herself again very well, as a child, playing with Anna, laughing and running together in various games, under the amused gaze of the king and queen. Elsa paused for a moment in front of a large old painting hanging on the wall, representing the royal family that once ruled Arendelle. Agnarr. Iduna. Anna. Elsa. They were there, upright and serious, their portraits frozen forever in this canvas. Heartbroken, Elsa gently came to touch Anna's painted face with her fingertips, and couldn't hold back a tear from falling. Everything was so far away now... The world, the people she had known, were long gone...

In a corner of the room, she noticed another painting that had been found by Monarch. This painting showed Anna, adult, smiling and jovial as usual, and lovingly cuddling Zilla's head when he was still a baby. Elsa smiled sadly at this painting, remembering perfectly that it had been done only a few days after Zilla was born. It had been a real ordeal to hold this restless baby titan in place. Elsa sits down for a moment in front of the painting.

_ "Anna..." she sighed. "What adventures we both lived... And it continues for me even today... I do my best to ensure my role and fortunately Godzilla is here... without him, I would have sunk for a long time... I don't know what you would think of this new world that ours has become... I miss you so much, but know above all that I love you, little sister, and that despite the centuries, I never stopped..."

After this trip to the past, Elsa joined Serizawa who was waiting outside in the courtyard of the castle.

_ "Once again, thank you for everything you do for me." said Elsa, her face hidden under the hood of her jacket. "But I have one last favor to ask of you: take care of this place, please."

_"You have my word." Serizawa replied as he watched the goddess going away and leaving.

Once he was totally alone in the castle courtyard, Serizawa lingered for a moment, looking around as if to check that no one was there.

_"She left. It's good, you can come." he said.

From behind one of the columns in the courtyard, a female figure, wrapped in a large dark cloak and her head hidden by a hood, revealed herself and advanced towards the director of Monarch. The woman removed her hood, revealing herself to be Shego.

_"You know that sooner or later, they will find out about me." she said coldly. "Besides, I still don't understand why you are helping me?"

_"Because I believe in second chances." Serizawa answered seriously looking at her. "You may be a criminal, but you also knew how to see the truth about the Mechagodzilla and the deadly threat he posed to our world. I want to believe that now you have enough sense to realize that these little quarrels over money or world domination are futile... Other planetary threats are looming, and we will need all the help we can get in this difficult battle that lies ahead, and which concerns all of us."

Shego listened, her face closed, but had listened intently. Serizawa then took out his cell phone and showed a symbol to her. A symbol on a black background, representing a red skull with undulating tentacles.

_"What is that?" Shego asked, puzzled.

_ "They call themselves Hydra." Serizawa explained darkly. "Their specialty is biotech-terrorism, and recently, our spy sources told us that this organization receives financial and military aid from unknown beneficiaries. They would also have embarked on a specialty: the trafficking of titans DNA. This will be your first mission: locate and dismantle their trafficking networks at all costs. This is your chance to redeem yourself, Shego the Emerald Blade."

Shego slightly parted her dark cape, revealing that she was still wearing her black and green outfit, but most importantly a katana that had been provided to her by Monarch and whose particularity was that it could be imbued with her green flames.

_"I'll do it... But not for you, let's be clear." affirmed Shego who immediately disappeared, leaving Serizawa alone.

Elsa walked for a long time, until outside the city, until reaching a beach of gray sand which she skirted in the greatest silence, until finally reaching a corner of the beach totally wild and isolated from any human presence. There, Godzilla was waiting for her. The titan, body half submerged in water, watched her come to him, emitting a neutral growl. She looked at him, and he could see the sadness and longing in her eyes. He understood her better than anyone.

Grumbling softly, he brought his muzzle up, against which Elsa came to snuggle up for a moment, caressing with her hands the scaly, hard, warm skin of her dear king who was always there to support her. Yes... at least he would still be there, with her...

_ "Let's go home." she said with a loving smile towards him.

Godzilla nodded slowly, growling. Elsa ditched her borrowed civilian clothes to cover herself again in her long white goddess dress magically materializing on her body, and climbed on Godzilla's head, who spun around, kicking up waves because of his huge body and began to swim out to sea. Sitting on Godzilla's head, Elsa remained pensive, her gaze looking towards the horizon and the slowly setting sun, and wondering where the future could take her and her king now...

***********

Meanwhile...

From the depths of a lost cavern, dark and damp, a human figure, dressed entirely in black, stepped out of the gloom, holding a flaming torch in his hand. Letting hear the crunch of his boots on the wet rock, the stranger approached the back wall, and in the glow of the flames, revealed a very old fresco damaged by time, but still showing something...

_ "Well... If man won't kill God... Then the Devil will do it."

The glow of the flames revealed the ancient design of the mural depicting what looked like a huge scarlet creature, with a massive body, seemingly springing from a devastating volcanic eruption, sporting a long horn on its forehead, growths on the sides of its head almost reminiscent of demon horns, demonic yellow eyes and spreading huge bat-like wings behind his back. And under this giant demonic-looking creature, had been engraved a single word that it had been tried to erase, in vain...

Destoroyah.
