Chapter 5: To the White Star Line!
Off the group ran, over to the White Star Line office. They needed to talk to Mr. J Bruce Ismay and Mr. Thomas Andrews! When the four got there, Iris stopped causing everyone else to crash into her. In front of them stood none other than Mr. Thomas Andrews himself!
"What are four young people doing rushing into this office at this time? Shouldn't you be in school?"
"We are in a very complicated situation Mr..?" T replied
"My name is Mr. Thomas Andrews and I am the designer of the great ship the Titanic. Though I am surprised you do not know who I am. I am well known in England and Ireland."
"I'm sorry Mr. Andrews, you have to forgive us. We're kind of new around here." Salali spoke next. "My name is Salali, the young man is T,behind me is Becca, and in the front is Iris."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Andrews can we please speak to you privately? It is terribly important. Oh, do you still happen to have the plans for the ship? I would like to see them."
Salali,T, and Becca stared at her with a quizzical expression. Then they turned and looked at each other. They all wondered what Iris could possibly need the ship plans for.
The four of them waited for Mr. Andrews to retrieve the papers from his office. They were worried that he would just ignore them because they were younger. Finally, after what seemed like ages he came out- with the plans.
"I would like to know what this is all about. I can't have my reputation being ruined by young people."
"Sorry, Mr. Andrews, sir. I need to point out some things that you may not have thought about. There is a major design flaw in the ship!"
"Impossible. I went to school for this and have never made a mistake."
"Let me show you. The Titanic can float with any 3 filled compartments and stay afloat up to the first four, correct?"
"Yes... What are you getting at?"
"The top of the compartments are open so theoretically if one over flowed it could just keep going over into the next one until--
"That would take an awful lot of water for that to happen and the chances of the Titanic taking on that much water is impossible!"
"Not exactly, you see if she hit an object at the side as it was moving it would tear a gash in the side that would instantly start filling up more than 4 water tights. IF this were to happen the Titanic would be gone in two hours tops."
"Can you prove what you say?"
T cut in. "Of course we can. We are from-"
"T, don't say anything. We don't know if we can trust him." Iris whispered as she elbowed him.
"You can trust me." Mr. Andrews overheard them talking.
Iris sighed. "Okay. We're from the future. We have no idea how we got here but we can tell you that the Titanic will sink the way I described it! You have to believe us! This is why it is crucial that you put more life boats on board! If you don't more that 1,500 people will die!"
"She's right, you know. You haven't wondered this whole time why we don't talk like the Irish or English?"
"No,I had never really thought about it. I will need more proof though that you are telling the truth. You know how it is, I can't have four young people saying the ship is going to sink and having people cancel at the last minute."
Iris told the group to show Mr. Andrews their cell phones. (While they had been able to bring them, they didn't work.) "Whoa... OK I believe you. There is no way that you can be from this time period."
Iris and the gang spent the rest of the day going over the details of the Titanic sinking. It wasn't long after that Mr. Thomas Andrews was convinced of the severity of the situation.
"Thank you for taking the time to explain everything to me. I greatly appreciate that. Now, you should all head to Mr. Ismay's office. He will want to know what is going to happen. If necessary I can go talk to him afterwards."
"Yes, Sir. Can you please tell us where his office is?"
"Down the hall and to the left, number 101."
Iris, T, Becca, and Salali tramped down the hall to Mr. Ismay's office. When they explained their story and situation yet again, it was received coldly. Mr. Ismay refused to believe them. After all, the Titanic was unsinkable, worth millions, and was the largest and most beautiful ocean liner in the world.
There was nothing the foursome could do. They turned to leave. Mr. Ismay did not even dismiss them. He was clearly angry. They understood in away. Mr. Ismay was a man that was always concerned about his reputation, and, like Mr. Andrews he did not want word to leak out that the ship would sink.
As Iris lead them out of the building Mr. Andrews called to them.
"Wait!"
