Chapter 14: Titanic's Fate

Crunch! The grating sound of metal on ice could be heard. T, Becca and Salali, though expecting it, were catapulted forward by the impact. The engines shut down. There was silence. A crew member came running up to them. Luckily they were in their uniforms. They had to help get the passengers calm. People who had been inside when the impact happened were panicking at the silence. All they had to do was reassure them that they were just doing regular maintenance. "Lies" thought Becca angrily.

The group was separated running around to all of the passengers. Becca tried hard not to worry about the chaos that was sure to ensue once people found out what was really happening. She also worried about themselves. What would happen to them once they started to load the lifeboats? Salali and herself would get onto one boat but T may not get onto one ever. She shook her head trying to rid it of those thoughts. Of course they would all survive. Wouldn't they?

Salali too was having the same thoughts. She was kept too busy to think about them in detail though. She stopped. First Officer Lightoller was coming her way. He knew all the crew's faces and would surely recognize her as not being one. She tired to duck out of his was but he looked at her and smiled. "How are you passengers doing miss?" He asked.

"Fine, thank you sir. They don't seem too worried about it at the moment."

"Glad to hear it."

Salali breathed a sigh of relief when he left. She had been so worried but it seemed like there was a stewardess that looked a lot like her.

T glanced at the lifeboats worriedly. There were not enough for all of them. He knew he was a good swimmer but no one would last long in the ice water the Atlantic offered. A steward her knew as Peter came up to him. "Scared?" he asked. T shook his head in response. He excused himself and hurried away to find Becca and Salali.

The boats were being loaded. Chaos and panic was normal on the boat deck. They managed to load the boats quickly, but not full. They would grab women and help them into the boat and throw children in. Then they would lower the boats with no more than 15 people per boat. In the distance he saw Becca and Salali helping passengers in, then they were stepping into a boat! He felt betrayed because they were leaving him behind on a floating palace that would not be afloat for much longer.

He tried not to concentrate on that as he helped yet another passenger into a boat. The boats were getting fewer and fewer by the minute. What T feared from the start was confirmed. There would not be any lifeboats for him to get into. He had hoped that if he went above and beyond to help the passengers he would get a lifeboat. He knew of some people who had been able to do that in the past. He knew that was a selfish reason but it was his only hope of survival.

The Titanic was tilting at a dangerous angle. Hundreds of people were still on the deck trying to hold on and keep from falling off the boat. He heard people still claiming the boat wouldn't sink. T thought they were stupid. There was a loud cracking sound, and then T was falling. A few moments later battered and bruised he stood up. He was on solid ground. On the Titanic of all places. The only different was there was no back half. He had to jump. So he did. The ice cold water took his breath away. With strong kicks he swam away from the ship. He did not know what direction he was going but all he knew was that he had to keep moving or else he would freeze to death.

Becca and Salali were scanning the water for any signs of T. They felt bad about leaving him but they were told to get in a boat. There was no sign of him. They could only hope that he got on a boat. Someone behind them screamed. The Titanic was sticking up in the air, and then it snapped in two. The top half landed in the water and floated therefor a while. Then, it too slowly drifted toward its watery grave. This was it, the Titanic's fate.
