HERO
Hey guys I am back with something which u can called a recycled OS. I have basically recycled my OS ' Heartbreak' and wrote this one. This touches a really sensitive issue of our society. Have a good read !
Pain and vulnerability walks hand in hand. His knees weakened seeing his mother being wheeled into the operation theatre. He was tired of holding onto every last second of happiness. All the responsibilities had fallen upon his shoulder after his father's untimely death. He was accused by the society of being a man of straw who didn't have the valor to follow his father's footsteps and join the army. But he new better. He had seen the harrowing pain in his mother's eyes every time his father left them alone for his duty towards their nation.
Life isn't a pie in the sky. It comes along with it's own sets predicaments and adversities. He had engaged himself in knowing the ropes of Law from a very young age and dreamt of opening a Law Firm one day in future. But he wasn't the planner of life. His dreams weren't meant to be fulfilled. He had a chip on his shoulder ever since he was forced to work as a corporate lawyer. His boss ran the company with an iron hand in a velvet glove. The boss' ideologies always conflicted with his. He had no capital to start his own firm while his work environment wasn't too pleasant. He was caught between a rock and a hard place.
He had heard the echo of his shattered heart, it's bits and pieces strewn all over, when the Doctor had appeared at the doorstep with a medical report stating that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer and had slim chances of survival. The ugly side of life mocked him. Well, he had never seen the other side for over a decade now. The path of life took him nowhere except towards despairs and realizations.
There was this bubble, the fantasy of a happy place , where he would lay on his mother's lap as she caressed his head, lulling him to a peaceful slumber. There was a taken for granted joy in believing that his father would ring the bell of their home and announce his arrival in his guttural voice which had proved to be an earworm. Yet today it was only failure and disappointment bursting his bubble. Happiness had faded away long time back and hope walked away without saying a word. He wanted to be loved. He wanted his family back together.
It was a toss-up between immunotherapy and surgery. The oncologist went for the latter. Weeks went into gathering the large amount required for the surgery but never did he feel exhausted. He could do anything to save her life.
Walking away from the long corridor of the hospital he rested against a pillar. Fishing out his leather wallet, he caressed their family picture from nights back. A wild cry erupted from his lips. Holding the picture in his hand, he went back to the happy days. A picture, where there was his family with their eyes sparkling in joy. Their last excursion together where he had laughed at his father's lame jokes and his mother sang old school songs as they had hit the road, late at night. That night was full of love, fun, joy and hilarity. They enjoyed every bit of it, not aware of the fact that they were making memories and his father would part ways soon , forever. His mother's presence was the only thing that made him feel alive. But one thing he wasn't aware was, how he would live once she left him too.
That's the beauty of photographs. It neither asks nor demands. It just reminded him of those delightful moments. Of those lovely and noteworthy times where it was just him and his guiding lights and that everlasting bond between them. Where the moments were just still, holding them together Where no one is allowed to enter and where no one is allowed to leave. Where smiles on the faces and looks in the eyes do all the talking. Where the feeling was still. Where there was no hurting and only joy. But now all those moments of joy appeared to be a damp squib. He carried their treasured moments with him, he carried the love with him, he carried them. He kept it next to his heart and hoped that his mother's treatment won't bite the dust hence snatching away his only reason to live in the cruel world.
Placing the picture back in his wallet he stepped out of the hospital breathing in the fresh air. It was the time when the heavy, velvety heat of the summer day , like the ocean tide was slowly running away. The sun tired after a day of honest and conscientious work was slowly rolling across the sky, approaching the horizon. Yellow, glitteringly bright by the day was changing its colour and shade to softer and warmer hues , which like a weightless shawl was covering everything around. Nature had almost pulled the wool over his eyes with it's astounding colours taking him away from the material world until his cell phone dinged with a notification. He was selected as an intern in a reputed Law Firm in London, away from home. He was torn again. He could not decide between accepting a better life and moving on ahead and holding his mother's hand until her last breath.
As the sun dissolved in the horizon , the nurses rolled out his mother on a stretcher. The operation had been successful by the grace of the almighty. He knew she wouldn't hold him back after receiving the news of his achievement. A tough decision lay ahead of him. He had to choose between his mother and a brighter future.
After hours of waiting he was beckoned into her cabin where she laid in a deep sleep. He walked towards her in timorous steps. Her cheeks were hollow and a pale tinge covered her skin. She looked fragile and old. His decision was made. He typed a mail rejecting their offer. He silently knelt beside her, squeezed her hand and whispered that he would always be there for her.
His father had martyred himself for Mother Nation while he held onto his mother leaving a radiant future which awaited his arrival. He was no less than a hero.
