Chapter 37: The Passage of Time

Tinkerbell was relieved when Peter Pan did not get adopted. She had been by his side since they had arrived from Neverland. The fear of losing him once he got adopted haunted her soul. But, Peter Pan wasn't going anywhere. He would never leave Wendy and Tinkerbell would never leave him.

Growth changes humans. Tinkerbell knew that, every fairy knew it, but to see it was something else. As the years flew by, the children grew. John, Michael, Wendy Darling, and even Peter Pan grew up to be amazing adults. Once they were no longer children, Tinkerbell did not interfere in their lives as much. They didn't need her. Of course they could still see her, and often did interact with her.

Tinkerbell was the secret best man at the wedding of Wendy Darling and Peter Pan. She was also the godmother of all four of their children; Porter, Landow, Tanya, and Dina. One could say she was their fairy godmother. Michael and John soon had their own families as well. They stopped visiting the Pan household so often after that.

Once Peter Pan's red hair cooled to a steely gray, the calls started to come in. Michael's wife was the first to call. It was in the middle of Pan family dinner. Wendy Pan answered the phone. She repeated the caller's message in a solemn tone. "Fatal motorcycle accident" were the key words.

Michael was the last of the children to enter this world and the first to leave it. Tinkerbell wasn't sure what happened to humans after they died, or to fairies for that matter. In this instance, however, she got a firsthand account of what happened to the humans that were left behind.

They froze, then they screamed. Some had tears streaming down their faces while others stared into space, never blinking. Tinkerbell couldn't quite believe it. She still remembered the Michael Darling who wore footy pajamas and used his teddy bear as a shield. Now he was gone.

More years passed and the young Pans grew into Teenagers. Porter Pan was particularly tall. Most of Peter Pan's hair had fallen out by the time he received the call from Joann Darling, John's eldest daughter.

John had become a professor of Archeology like he always wanted. He spent most of his time traveling the world to research ancient civilizations. On this last trip to Brazil, John Darling became separated from his expedition group. He was lost for months before Joann called to say that if he ever did return to the States, it would be in a coffin.

This moment proved to Tinkerbell that humans were the masters of denial. If you didn't give them hard evidence of devastating news, they wouldn't believe it. Wendy didn't believe her brother's death. She was sure he would come back just fine. She kept hope alive until one day John did return, exactly as Joann said he would.

It was at times like these that Tinkerbell missed Tinkerelias the most. These were people that she loved and would always miss, yet there was no one to comfort her. The humans were too busy making plans and mourning in their own ways.

They all forgot about Tinkerbell in these times of tragedy. She didn't blame them, they were only human after all. Tinkerbell longed for a comforting hand of her own size. It had been so long since she saw another fairy.

Many fairies came to the Kingdom for work, but Tinkerbell was in exile. They tried their best to avoid her and they did a good job of it.

Every now and then, she could swear she saw Tinkerelias's frame out of the corner of her eye. That wasn't possible though. He was a home fairy and had no reason to be in the Kingdom. Tinkerbell couldn't remember the last time she saw Tinkerelias, but she was pretty sure they fought.

Wendy left this earth not too long after John. Only Porter had gotten married and Wendy just missed the birth of her first grandchild. They diagnosed her breast cancer at a late stage and Wendy opted to spend her last days comfortable at home instead of in a hospital.

Tinkerbell had seen many sides to Peter Pan; scared, angry, happy, and excited. But, after Wendy died, Tinkerbell saw a completely different side of him. It was a weak side.
