Chapter 36: Life of the Exiled
Her surroundings went black and the current came to an abrupt stop. She landed finally on something soft and supple. Upon opening her eyes, Tinkerbell recognized immediately where she was. Resting comfortably, she lay on the broad back of a beast called Nana. This was the Darling household and Tinkerbell was not alone in it.
"Where are we?" Said a young voice, Cubby.
"We're home!" Esclaimed Wendy.
"Whose home?" Asked Ace.
"We don't have homes." Spoke Cubby solemnly.
"Whenever we're together we're home." The twins spoke confidently in unison. They smiled as they stared at each other.
"This is Wendy, Michael, and Jon's house. We don't live here." Said a listless Peter Pan. The ordeal in Neverland seemed to have taken a toll on him.
"What do we do now Peter?" Asked Cubby with a hopeful gaze at Peter Pan.
Peter Stuttered. "I-I-I......"
Just then the door to the children's bedroom burst open. In rushed two adults who Tinkerbell correctly guessed to be the Darling parents. It slipped everyone's minds how fast time passed in the Kingdom.
What had been about half a day in Neverland, had been many days in the Kingdom. The parents had dark circles under their eyes and were throwing around hugs and kisses haphazardly. The twins were getting most of the kisses; something the parents didn't notice until the end.
Once and appropriate amount of affection was doled out, the parents took a step back and realized just how many children they were dealing with. They started out with three, and for the past few days were sorrowfully left with none. Now they had a total of eight children in their midst. Tinkerbell was not counted of course. The adults didn't notice her and never would.
Time passes so quickly in the Kingdom. The humans didn't notice. They were accustomed to it. They were built for it, but Tinkerbell was a different breed. She was a fairy meant for slowly growing and aging through the centuries. In the Kingdom she could feel the time slipping by at a head spinning rate. It was like she was the lone audience member watching a show played in fast forward.
The children left one by one, except for the twins who left by two. The Darling parents never got the whole story. It was impossible for the children to find the words to explain what they had been through. Even if they could, the parents would never believe the story. No sane human adult would.
Although they were good people, the Darlings could not feasibly raise eight children. They tried their absolute best to find good homes for every child. Ace left first. A very tall woman and an even taller man came and took him with them. The Darlings would occasionally get postcards from Ace on his many adventures with his new parents. He was happy.
Cubby went next. A portly woman and her thin stick husband came for him. The couple slightly reminded Tinkerbell of Changerfaye and Growerkay and she imagined Cubby being very happy with them.
The twins were slightly harder to adopt out than Ace and Cubby. The two were a package deal and if anyone even mention splitting them up they would burst into inconsolable tears. Eventually, though, the perfect family arrived. One lone woman, not more than five feet tall came by on a rainy afternoon. She wore a sweater with a cat's face on it and the twins immediately loved her. She was the mother they were meant to have.
After the twins were adopted, it was just Peter Pan and the Darlings...and Tinkerbell of course. There were many attempts to get Peter Pan adopted but it never panned out. He was too much of a free spirit. The only people he would sit down and be quiet for were the Darlings. His age was also a problem. He was the oldest of all the lost boys and adoptive parents rarely wanted older children. Soon enough, the parent prospects dried up and Peter Pan was left with the Darlings.
