Chapter 33: Fight of a Lifetime
Tinkerbell knew him to be Captain Hook. She had seen him before when she rescued Peter Pan, but he was different now, darker. Maybe it was the lack of adrenaline, but now she had much more time to take in his presence. She wished she didn't. He was horrifying. Out of fear for the unprepared children, Tinkerbell flew in front of John Darling, who was currently leading the pack. The pirates would never hurt a fairy.
"Smee! Plan F!" Roared the captain. Tinkerbell had no time to react before something closed in around her. It was a lantern. The pirates were smart. The cage they trapped her in had a small fire at the center. The glass walls would keep her away from the fight and the smoldering fire would provide her with enough energy as night neared.
Another thing the glass walls offered Tinkerbell was a perfect view of the fight. Immediately after Tinkerbell was captured, a large group of burly pirates surrounded the children.
"Grab the rest but leave Pan to me!" Snarled hook. The pirates did as they were told. They grabbed the lost boys plus Wendy. It was quite the struggle full of biting and screaming but the pirates succeeded at tying up the children. Only Peter Pan was left unbound and out in the open.
"Your wooden sword is no match for my real one Pan!" Hook shouted as he drew his large metal sword. It shone in the light of the setting sun as if it had never been used before.
"I could beat you with both hands behind my back!" Peter Pan replied with unwavering confidence. The other pirates erupted into laughter at the thought, but Hook silenced them quickly with one harsh look.
"How do you expect to beat me? I've trapped your fairy. I've trapped your friends. You're at a disadvantage." Hook stated in a confident yet curious tone.
"There's one thing you don't know about me Captain Hook. I.....can fly." Peter Pan said matter-of-factly before floating gently in the air.
"He can fly." Wendy said as if she had forgotten that fact until now.
"He can fly!" John repeated, excited about the advantage it gave to Peter Pan.
"He can fly, he can fly!" Screamed Michael, seemingly happy to just be screaming. The rest of the lost boys joined into the screaming and soon they were all chanting "He can fly!" Even Tinkerbell joined in on the chant from inside her lantern. Peter Pan drew more confidence from the chanting and flew up even higher.
"Come back here!" Hook shouted. He reached up his arm and caught the bottom of Peter Pan's shirt with his hook. Peter Pan swung his wooden sword around and knocked the hook loose. As the hook detached, the captain was propelled forward. He flew straight toward the mast of the ship as he instinctively put out his hands for support. Of course, one of his hands was a hook.
The hook embedded deep into the wood of the mast and Hook was stuck. It was the same mast that the Lost Boys were tied to and they didn't waste the opportunity. They showed Hook their feelings by biting at his ankles. Hook got so annoyed that he swung his sword down at the children. But, instead of hitting any of them, he swung at exactly the right angle to cut them loose. As soon as the ropes were frayed, the children scattered in all directions.
"Get them!" Hook yelled as he struggled to free himself. Gathering the children a second time was no easy task as they took to the sky just like Peter Pan. It was an amazing sight to behold. The children hovered just out of the pirates' reach as they used their makeshift weapons to attack. The real scene, however, was back at the mast.
Hook and Peter Pan were having a swordfight like no other. Even with Captain Hook stuck to the mast, he was still a formidable opponent. He and Peter Pan were equal strike for strike. Tinkerbell couldn't bear to tear her eyes away from the match. Peter Pan was like an acrobat with the way he flew and flipped over Hooks head.
What Hook lacked in mobility, he made up for in brute strength. Even without one of his legs, eyes, and hands; he didn't waver for a second. There was one moment; Tinkerbell could see it forming, where Peter Pan got too cocky. He flew too close to Hook and didn't keep his senses aware. Hook took one swift swing of his sword and chopped Peter Pan's wooden one in half.
"Little boys and their toys are no match for grown men and their weapons." Hook said as the two halves of the wooden sword hit the deck. He then threw down his own sword and grabbed Peter Pan's neck until they were face to face.
"Another thing you don't know about me, is that I have a lot of friends." Peter Pan whispered before letting out a melodic whistle. A large cacophony of splashing occurred from under the ship and a female form appeared just off the port bow. She looked to be human but Tinkerbell could see a long serpentine tail waving behind her as she hung off of the side of the ship. She was a siren.
Tinkerbell had never seen a siren before. One look at her and the fairy knew why she was capable of causing men to crash their ships. Hook fell to his knees at the sight of her frail yet curvaceous form. The other pirates followed suit. The siren opened her burgundy eyes wide and parted her aquamarine lips.
Journeymen, journeymen lend me your ears
My heart is so lonely
I must have you near
Journeymen, journeymen come to my shores
I'm longing for company
Please give me yours
Journeymen, journeymen it won't take too long
Don't keep me waiting
Come follow my song
At the end of the siren song, the pirates ran toward her at full force. Hook was stuck with his hook in the mast, but his men were agile. They ran toward the side of the ship and promptly fell overboard. No splashes were made by the falling men. Each one was snapped up in the jaws of a crocodile before he even hit the water. Half of the crew became croc chow before the bloody sight snapped the other half out of their stupor. They halted in shock before falling off the boat.
"My men! My friends!" Screamed Hook as he witnessed half his crew be devoured. He picked up his discarded sword and pointed it between Peter Pan's eyes. "You're a monster, a nightmare!"
"I-I-I didn't know." was all Peter Pan could muster to say. Of course he didn't know. Sirens are tricksters. They thrive on chaos and destruction. Peter Pan probably had no idea what he agreed to when he got together with the likes of them.
"Hehehe. See you later Pan." Said the siren as she did a graceful back flip off the side of the ship. She landed with a minimal splash.
"Get your bratty bunch, grab your fairy, and get off of my ship now!!!" Hooks screams shook the entire boat. It was so terrifying that Tinkerbell could only watch, wide-eyed. Peter Pan, looking like he had only just now truly experienced fear, grabbed Tinkerbell's lantern and flew off. He didn't even look back to make sure the other children were following. Luckily, they were and they all made it back to the Tree of Life safely.
Upon landing at the tree, Wendy immediately started crying and Ace threw up. Cubby was frozen stiff with shock. All John Darling could manage to say was "I want to go home." None of the children had ever seen a person die before, let alone so many people die at once and in such a gruesome way.
When Peter Pan landed, he dropped Tinkerbell's lantern. Tinkerbell wasn't un-phased by the previous events either. She needed fresh air. The walls of the lantern were suddenly too close and she felt she was suffocating. It became unbearable so Tinkerbell began pounding on the glass.
"Let me out! I can't breathe!" Tinkerbell screamed as she began to choke on fumes from the small fire. Peter Pan managed to hear her screams. In a panicked rush, Peter Pan smashed the lantern against the Tree of Life. Tinkerbell was set free of her glass prison but so was the fire.
