Chapter 31: The Exit of Tigerlily

There wasn't much Tinkerbell could think to say as she and three children flew as fast as possible toward the brightest star. The Darlings were preoccupied with the marvel of flight. Michael was flipping over and over in the sky as he flew and John was doing everything he could to hold on to his hat and monocle. Then there was Wendy, not looking down at all. She looked straight toward the star and straight into Neverland.

A warm stream of air brought the scent of lilacs and wild berries to Tinkerbell's nose confirming her return to Neverland. The irony was not lost on her that while she had meant to remove one child from Neverland, she ended up adding three. It wasn't just any three either. It was a girl and her two brothers, a girl with a face that made tummies feel fuzzy, a girl that made Tinkerbell jealous. Wendy Darling was perhaps the worst thing that had ever happened to Tinkerbell.

"What is all this?" Came a harsh whisper from a female voice that Tinkerbell did not detest.

"He trusted his shadow and this is where it led us." Said Tinkerbell as calmly as she could muster.

"How could you let this happen?" Tigerlily continued in her harsh tone. Tinkerbell was shocked partly because Tigerlily was scolding her and partly because Tigerlily heard her at all. If this were Peter Pan she would have had to scream at the top of her lungs and fling her body around to get the point across. Tinkerbell spoke normally and Tigerlily heard it, no theatrics needed.

"You can hear me?" Tigerlily whispered as a test.

"I was born and raised here. Neverland teaches you to listen closer than the average human would ever think to, for your own protection." Replied Tigerlily, sending a small smirk Tinkerbell's way.

"Their names are Wendy, John, and Michael Darling. John is the older boy, Michael is the younger one, and Wendy is...."

"The beautiful one?"

"You noticed that too?"

"She's the first girl he's ever brought back with him. She must be special."

"She's not even lost!"

"No, but she's something."

"Ok gang! What should we do first? Play with mermaids, pow wow with Indians, or fight pirates?" Asked Peter Pan. Tinkerbell was astonished. He made Neverland seem like a paradise where the sirens were friendly, the pirates were playmates, and the Native Americans weren't in hiding. Was this how he saw Neverland? If so, he was sorely mistaken. His point of view was an appealing way to look at the world, but Tinkerbell feared for the day he would find out the truth.

"He's going to cause trouble. Peter Pan is brave and witty, but he's rash. He thinks this world is fun and games. It won't end well." Tigerlily said to Tinkerbell only.

"I know that and I fear that, but look at how happy he is. Look at how his eyes shine." Tinkerbell marveled at the young boy. She wanted so much to believe the way he believed, to never worry about consequences or solvers. Maybe, if she just let her worries slip away this once, she could have some real fun.

"I can't stay to witness this. It's too dangerous. I tried to help these lost boys when they first arrived. I felt solidarity through our shared humanity. But, it's getting too out of hand. He's getting to bold. I have a tribe to protect." Stated Tigerlily, giving Tinkerbell a pleading look. Tinkerbell understood.

"I can't expect you to stay." Replied Tinkerbell. Tigerlily let out a sigh of relief and started to back away towards the woods.

"You won't tell the other fairies that you've seen me right?" Asked tigerlily apprehensively.

"No, never." Replied Tinkerbell.

"Thank you." The whisper lingered in the air as Tigerlily disappeared into the forest.
