Chapter 29: The Use of a Shadow
When Tinkerbell returned, she found Peter Pan cowering behind a large boulder. His fear was palpable even after he turned to see that only Tinkerbell stood behind him. He didn't wait to hear that the coast was clear. Instead, he grabbed Tinkerbell in one of his hands and flew off as fast as he could. Through his fingers, Tinkerbell could see scenery speeding by. she had never flown this fast on her own and it was an exhilarating ride. Trees and buildings flew by. Then, the land disappeared and only waves were below. Soon the sea gave way to more land with differently shaped trees and darker green grass. As the grass got greener, their speed slowed to a gentle stop.
"Where are we?" Asked Tinkerbell. She climbed out of Peter Pan's hand to see that they were hovering in front of a large clock face.
"I'm not sure. I wasn't flying here on purpose. But I think I've seen this clock before in a book. It's called Big Ben." Peter Pan said. He flew close and placed his hand on the clock face. The light from the clock shone past Peter Pan casting a shadow behind him. He did an about face in a direction of the casted shadow.
"We have to go there!" Peter Pan pointed to the top floor of a high rise building that was enveloped in his expanded shadow.
"Why?" Tinkerbell asked quizzically.
"Because that's where my shadow is leading us." He explained. After speaking, he crossed his arms seemingly very content with himself.
"A shadow is not alive. It can't lead you anywhere." Replied Tinkerbell.
"I always follow my shadow. It hasn't led me wrong yet." Tinkerbell was getting annoyed at this point. Had he forgotten how they just finished running from his accidental kidnapping attempt? Was his attention span that short?
"I refuse to trust your shadow!" Tinkerbell yelled, not that Peter Pan could tell the difference between her angry yelling and the normal yelling that she used when speaking to him.
"Do you trust my instincts?" Asked Peter Pan.
"Yes." Replied Tinkerbell.
"Well my instincts are telling me to follow my shadow." Peter Pan said. He flew off before Tinkerbell had time to argue. She had no choice but to follow him toward a large window. It was dark through the window so Tinkerbell wasn't sure what was inside of the room. Peter Pan was far enough ahead of her that he disappeared into the room before she could even react.
"What are you doing? Tinkerbell panicked as she asked.
"The window was open. That means it's ok to enter." Said Peter Pan, whispering.
"No it doesn't! You don't know who or what is in there, please come back!" Peter Pan didn't reply. It was probably because Tinkerbell was whispering in response to Peter Pan's whispering so there was no chance for him to hear her. Since he apparently had no intention of leaving the room, Tinkerbell followed him in. She was careful. Her knowledge of the kingdom was rudimentary enough that she had no idea what could be waiting for her inside of a random dark room. As she tiptoed on the windowsill a puddle of liquid stated to accumulate at her feet. It was warm, sticky, and all too unpleasant.
