Chapter 27: The Atmosphere of the Kingdom
Tinkerbell stared at his charismatic smile and wondered where the young boy she once knew had gone. Although still a child, his large, round eyes had become sharp almonds and his plump cheeks were now sleek. Even his bright red heir had darkened to a smooth auburn that simmered under the green cap he still wore. The cute boy had become handsome and Tinkerbell found herself mesmerized.
She agreed to travel with him without second thought. It had been so long since she set eyes on him that, although she had already been aware that she missed him, her strong emotions clouded her better judgment. It was an intriguing thought to take a journey full of excitement with a boy who was still so full of wonder.
Along with wanting to go on an adventure, there was a good deal of worry involved in Tinkerbell's decision making. He was still so young and his decision making capacity was not the greatest. After all, he had basically just kidnapped a child in broad daylight and still didn't seem to understand why it was wrong. It was almost like the only reason he agreed to take the crying child back was because it was a chance to show Tinkerbell around the Kingdom.
Peter Pan held out his broad hand to Tinkerbell. She put her slim hand in his and they immediately started to levitate. It wasn't Tinkerbell's doing. The boy was carrying them both toward the sky as shinning sparks fell off of him. It was the glitter of fairy dust. Tinkerbell wondered how this was possible. When she sent him off before, she gave him only enough fairy dust to allow him to get home. He shouldn't have retained the ability to fly.
A sniffle came from Tinkerbell's right. She looked over to see the newest lost boy holding tight to Peter Pan's clothing. As she looked at his face, Tinkerbell felt ashamed of her self-centered thoughts of adventure. This child was scared out of his mind and here Tinkerbell was peacefully enjoying the trip. Slowly, as not to scare the boy, Tinkerbell flew over and landed on his shoulder.
"We're taking you home! It will be alright just think good thoughts!" Tinkerbell screamed into the boy's ear. He seemed to hear it as his sniffles stopped. Before she could say anything else to comfort the young boy, a bright light blinded her. The flash was a quick one. When it was over, Tinkerbell smelled a scent that she had never experienced before. It was horrible.
"What is that smell?" Tinkerbell said as she waved her hand over her nose exaggeratedly.
"Yeah that's garbage,or maybe the sewer. Lots of things smell in the Kingdom." Peter Pan replied.Tinkerbell could hear the disgust in his voice. She wondered what kind of past could cause a boy to dislike his home so much.
Not only were the smells unappealing, but the Kingdom was loud. Noises came from above and below causing the ground to shake and Tinkerbell's head to spin. She looked up to get a glimpse of the sky but it was dark. Time moved so fast in the Kingdom that while it was still morning in Neverland, it was pitch black darkness here.
Although the sky was black, the atmosphere was bright. Tinkerbell was confused by the flashing lights that surrounded her from every angle. Night should be dark. The only light on a Neverland night was that of the moon and maybe a few flickering candles from those who stayed up late. But, this was something different. It was like a second morning. How did people sleep here.
"It's so bright." Tinkerbell marveled out loud. It was less of a statement and more of a confused declaration.
"It's the Big Apple. This is how it always is." Replied Peter Pan. Tinkerbell listened to the name "Big Apple" and cringed slightly. How could such a natural name be given to such an obviously unnatural place. The only green Tinkerbell could see was some sparse grass that managed to break free of its gray prison. The prison was called cement. Tinkerbell knew of it only through tales and the fact that it paved the streets of the human fairy village. She didn't like it in the village and she didn't like it here.
"Do all humans live this way?" Asked Tinkerbell, aghast at the reality.
"I was born here. It's all I know. There is one place, though, that's not like this at all. It's the neverlandiest place in the whole city. I got him from there." Peter Pan stated as he gestured to the small boy at his side.Tinker bell looked at the boy who was no longer sniffling but still looked wide eyed and afraid. Again, in the excitement, she forgot he was here and again Tinkerbell was immediately ashamed. He needed to get back to his family.
"Take me to this neverlandish place." Ordered Tinkerbell. She was serious now because she knew that the little boy would never get back to his family if she didn't keep Peter Pan on track.
"Think good thoughts." Peter Pan said under his breath. It wasn't meant for Tinkerbell's ears but fairy hearing misses nothing. A small smile crept across her face as she recognized her influence over the young man's actions.
