Chapter 25: The Power of a Clap
"Peter Pan!" Tinkerbell's voice wrenched from her throat so forcefully that her vocal cords tried to follow. The sound of her scream was so loud that Peter Pan almost heard it. A more sensitive ear would have heard her. Tigerlily looked down in Tinkerbell's direction. She trembled slightly, grasping at a turquoise pendant that had previously been hidden under her collar, as she stared at Tinkerbell's pained face.
"My problem..." Tigerlily whispered, as quietly as if she were simply exhaling in Peter Pan's direction. It was so quiet that Tinkerbell's sensitive ears could hear the words. She wasn't sure what Tigerlily was going to say but she knew she didn't want Peter Pan to hear the story from a girl she had just met.
The strength from Tinkerbell's body had been slowly drained as she had struggled to escape to the dark night sky. Now, without the sun or moon, her energy to fly was depleted. Although she was weak, Tinkerbell gathered every drop of her strength and raced into the sky. Short of the sky, she landed on Peter Pan's nose.
"Tink!" Peter Pan exclaimed as the listless fairy fell from his face and into his warm palm. The weakness was enveloping Tinkerbell's entire body. Not a sliver of irony was lost on Tinkerbell as she remembered that the only other time she had been this weak was in Peter Pan's grasp as well.
"Clap! If you want her to survive we have to clap!" Peter Pan yelled to Tigerlily and the boys. Cubby made a motion towards clapping but that urge was squashed by a stern look from Tigerlily.
"It's not safe. If this fairy tells other fairies of our existence...." Started Tigerlily.
"She would never do that!" Shouted Peter Pan before Tigerlily could finish her words.
"How do you know?"Asked Tigerlily, skeptical of his statement.
"Because she's my friend and I believe in her! If we don't clap she will die! You have to believe in her! Has she given you a single reason not to?" Peter Pan pleaded to anyone who would listen. Tinkerbell could see through blurring vision as Ace, the twins, and Cubby stood frozen in fear. They stood still as Tinkerbell's eyes closed slowly. She didn't blame them for being afraid of Tigerlily, of being found out, or of the unknown. They were only children.
Sleep seemed like the best option for Tinkerbell at that point. She wasn't in pain, just sleepy. Fairies rarely die so Tinkerbell had never seen it before. At this point, she started to wonder what happened to fairies after death and if all fairies died so peacefully. Just as she had given up on staying awake, from behind her head came a sharp, decisive clap.
