Chapter 24: The Meaning of Lost
An escape plan popped into Tinkerbell's head and she sat on her knees with her hands in her lap. She then calmly lifted her right hand and placed it on the glass. Ace followed suit and placed his finger at the same point as Tinkerbell's on the other side of the glass.
As soon as he touched the glass, Tinkerbell knew her plan was working. With her eyes locked directly on his, she opened them wide and wrapped her left hand around her throat to signify choking. Then, as dramatically as possible, she fell on her back and lay limp.
"She can't breathe!" Ace exclaimed. Tinkerbell could hear the panic in his voice. Soon after his exclamation came the sound Tinkerbell was waiting for. It was the soft pop of the jar lid being removed.
"No!" screamed Tigerlily, but it was too late. The metal lid hit the ground and Tinkerbell flew out of the jar as fast as she could. Her sense of direction was jumbled and instead of flying up into the sky, she flew straight into Ace's face.
"Catch her!" Screamed Tigerlily. Without the glass jar to buffer the sound, it was too much for Tinkerbell. Disoriented and afraid, Tinkerbell flew towards safety, towards light. The sun had already set so it was no guidance and the moon had entered the darkest phase of it's cycle. All of the light in the sky was coming from a few stars scattered across the darkness. It was Tinkerbell's only hope. With the brightest star in her sights, Tinkerbell flapped her wings as hard as possible.
Her escape was blocked by a barrage of hands swatting from all directions. For a fairy as adept at flying as Tinkerbell, threading through fingers should have been no problem. But, the children were continuously shouting and the sky was a little too dark. She slipped through the broad hands of Ace and cruised to a height that was luckily just out of the reach of little Cubby. The Twins threw up their hands but became tangled in each other giving Tinkerbell the chance to fly around them. Escape seemed almost possible until the last pair of hands swatted through the sky. Of course it was Tigerlily who knocked Tinkerbell to the ground.
"Things always get exciting as soon as I leave hahaha!" A voice bellowed over Tinkerbell. Although it was a voice Tinkerbell had never heard before, it sounded comforting.
"We have a prob..." Tigerlily started her sentence but stopped short. "Who is this?" She continued speaking in a surprised tone. Tinkerbell, still on the ground from being hit by Tigerlily, looked up just enough to see a dark skinned child sniffling on the ground.
"This is another little lost boy I've found. I call him Tiny." Spoke the deep voice. The little boy sat cross-legged on the ground looking up at Tigerlily. There were tears falling from sad eyes and something was coming from the boy's mouth that sounded like 'Mama'.
"Is he saying Mama!?!? Lost boys don't call for their mothers! Did you kidnap him?" Tigerlily exclaimed. Tinkerbell couldn't help but stare at the young boy. His cheeks, covered in tears, reminded her so much of the boy she rescued from pirates. Tinkerbell missed Peter Pan.
"I found him playing alone in a playground. He has no mother!" The deep voice seemed stern and confident.
"Aren't kids supposed to play alone on the playground?" Asked Ace in an unsure tone.
"The mommies sit on benches...." started one twin.
"and the babies play on the playground." continued the second twin.
"We've seen it!" The twins said confidently in unison.
"Aw he misses his mommy." added Cubby as he slowly poked the smaller boy in his mahogany cheek.
"MAMA!" The dark skinned child wailed. It was as if tiny dams burst from behind his eyes and a river ran out.
"This boy has a family! He is not lost Peter Pan!" Screamed Tigerlily. Hearing the name was like a lightning bolt to Tinkerbell's heart. The jolt caused her head to wrench up and she saw him. He was taller, older, bigger, but he was Peter Pan.
