Chapter 23: The Girl of Neverland
There in the edge of the clearing was a stunning girl wearing a dress that was impeccably sewn from deer skin. Her complexion was dark, not quite as dark as Watcherlyn but darker than Peter Pan. She looked to be about the same age as Peter Pan or slightly older. On her head she wore a leather woven cord with intricate beadwork at the center of it. As she walked toward the boys, Tinkerbell could see a long black braid swaying down her back. With each step, the girl jutted out her left hip to support a large basket of fruit she was carrying.
"I've told you boys not to make so much noise. It's not good to draw attention to yourselves in the daytime. And put out this fire now!" Spoke the girl.
"Sorry Tigerlily." The four boys anwered in unison. Tinkerbell made note of the interesting name. The tallest of the boys walked over and stomped out the fire with his bare foot before returning promptly.
Tigerlily walked toward each boy and handed him what looked like a mix between an orange and a watermelon. When she held out the fruit to the smallest boy, he made no motion to take it from her. The fruit was large enough to require two hands and the small boy was too busy trying to hide Tinkerbell behind his back.
"What have you got there Cubby?" Tigerlily asked the small boy. He hesitated for a short moment before bringing out the jar.
"We caught it and want to keep it as a pet." Cubby answered timidly. When Tigerlily saw Tinkerbell sitting cross-legged at the bottom of the jar she dropped her basket and the remaining fruit it contained rolled off in all directions.
"What have you done?" Tigerlily whispered as she stared wide eyed at the jar.
"What's wrong?" Asked Cubby. Tinkerbell could hear a tremble of fear in his voice.
"You've doomed us all!" Tigerlily screamed before quickly covering her mouth.
"I'm sorry! I will let it go!" As Cubby put his hand on the jar lid, Tigerlily ripped the jar from his grasp.
"We can't let her go yet. Just let me think." Tinkerbell started to worry as she was transferred into the girl's hands. It seemed that getting out of her glass prison would not be so easy. The area was quiet as Tigerlily took time to think. Although none of the boys spoke, they all seemed apprehensive of Tigerlily's actions.
"Ace, Twins come over here, gather round." Tigerlily said to the tall blond boy and the two boys next to him who looked like copies of each other. The three boys walked closer and crouched down around the darker skinned girl.
"Neverland is fun and happy on the surface, but there is a dark side. The 'thing' you caught is a fairy. She and others like her are the inhabitants of Neverland. Humans aren't supposed to be here. If we let her go and she tells the other fairies about us, something very bad will happen to us." said Tigerlily in an ominous voice.
"Will we get a timeout?" Asked Cubby.
"Worse than that." Answered Tigerlily.
"A spanking?" The twins said in unison.
"Even worse than that." Said Tigerlily. Cubby and the twins gasped at the possibility of something being worse than a spanking.
"So what do we do?" Asked Ace. He seemed to be the most mature of the group. As he spoke he knelt down and peered into the jar. Tinkerbell was banging on the sides of the jar as hard as she could but it was barely audible to Ace.
"She's pretty." Ace said and Tinkerbell heard it loud and clear. No one had ever called her pretty before, not even Tinkerelias. In fact, Tinkerbell had never felt particularly good looking in her brown baggy uniform and tight up-do. She focused on her reflection in the glass and remembered that she had changed into her green dress after work as usual. Her hair was still up in a tight bun but that was easily remedied. The elastic on her hair was old and worn so it snapped as soon as she touched it. Just like the day she bloomed from her flower, her hair flowed down her back as smooth and silky as ever. Ace continued to stare in awe of Tinkerbell and she was not unaware of it.
