Chapter 22: The Boys of Neverland

It was still daylight outside, but only just. Tinkerbell flew toward the setting sun which was the direction of the Tree of Life. In Neverland the sun always rises and sets behind the tree of life. In Neverland everything starts and ends with the tree of life. There was a pit at the bottom of Tinkerbell's stomach. She hoped, for his sake, that Peter Pan hadn't returned but she so longed to see him. The conflicting feelings battled in her brain until she finally saw the grand tree off in the distance.

As she reached the edge of the forest she saw it, her worst fear, a thin stream of thick smoke rising from just behind the Tree of Life. Tinkerbell was glad and distraught all at once. Even though her first instinct was to be happy and reminisce with Peter Pan, she decided against it. With how long he had been gone from Neverland he probably aged a few years and didn't remember her. Instead of flying down happily, she pasted a stern look on her face and flew toward the origin of the smoke like a bullet.

What Tinkerbell saw as she sped toward the ground surprised her so much that she had no time to slow down or protect herself. At the foot of the Tree of Life sat four small boys around a fire. None of them were Peter Pan which confused Tinkerbell greatly. She was so shocked by the sight before her that all she could do was shield her eyes from her impending collision with the ground.

It was a painful landing, but it wasn't the ground. Tinkerbell slammed face first into a cold smooth surface. She removed her hands from her eyes and touched the surface. It was glass. Upon looking up she saw eight eyes staring back at her through the glass. Those eyes belonged to four little human boys, all who were similar to Peter Pan yet not the boy himself. They each looked through the glass at Tinkerbell with a sense of wonder and whimsy in their eyes. It was an awkward but not unpleasant situation for Tinkerbell.

"I want to hold it!" The shortest boy screamed as he grabbed the jar away from the other boys. With no footholds inside the smooth glass jar, Tinkerbell promptly tumbled onto her back. Things escalated quickly as the other boys refused to give up the jar. Tinkerbell rolled around unable to steady herself as the boys tussled over possession of her jar. She could hear all of their words clearly, though they were screaming, because the glass muffled the sound enough to make it the appropriate decibel for her ears.

"Peter would want us to share!" said one of the taller boys. He had blond hair and was dressed in shorts with no shirt.

"He's not even here!" screamed the shortest boy, again trying to run off with the jar.

"What's going on?" Called a voice from behind the boys. It was distinctly feminine and the boys froze as soon as they heard it. The four of them turned to face the speaking figure and Tinkerbell took the chance to get a glimpse as well.
