Chapter 21: The Truth of the Two
Later at home, Tinkerbell was eating dinner while Tinkerelias slept. She had gotten home extremely late today so Tinkerelias was asleep when she arrived. As she ate, Tinkerbell tried not to think about Peter Pan. Instead, she watched Tinkerelias's back rise and fall with each breath. The rising of his back reminded Tinkerbell of the rising smoke that Growerkel saw. She wanted to go see it.
"You should go." Said Tinkerelias as if reading Tinkerbell's mind. He didn't turn over so Tinkerbell was still staring at his back.
"What?" Asked Tinkerbell, wondering if Tinkerelias had ever been asleep at all.
"To the the forest. Go find out if there really was a fire and where the vegetables have gone." Tinkerelias still lay facing the opposite direction as he spoke.
"I told you I'm back for good!" Tinkerbell yelled, letting her emotions get the best of her.
"Youre not meant for this life, everyone knows it. I'm not sure what Queen Esmintu was thinking when she assigned you as a home fairy but she was wrong. You're too big for this village and possibly for all of Neverland. Just go, Bell." As Tinkerelias spoke, Tinkerbell was staring at his back hard enough to burn a hole in it. She was angry but not at him. Her anger was targeted inward because she knew he was right. From the second Peter Pan left Tinkerbell had been trying to make herself believe that she could be happy living a simple home tinker life. She had almost convinced herself of it but Tinkerelias was never fooled.
Tinkerbell felt like she couldn't breathe. She tried to inhale but her lungs wouldn't expand. The room suddenly felt small and stuffy. If she opened the door she knew she'd fly right through it and keep going. Instead, she flew up to the ceiling and opened the skylight. The sun hit her wings and the wind blew over her face. With the air finally able to enter her lungs, Tinkerbell rediscovered her confidence. She floated back down to the floor and walked over to Tinkerelias.
"It's like choosing between your husband and son. Even though you love your husband, your son needs you more. He can't take care of himself." Tinkerbell looked at Tinkerelias but his face was cold as stone as she spoke. His eyes were so tightly shut that Tinkerbell imagined he was truly asleep the entire time. But, she knew that wasn't the case. Tinkerelias was a peaceful sleeper and the face she was staring at now was not peaceful.
He wasn't going to talk to her anymore, she could tell. Sometimes Tinkerelias was so stubborn, like a bull. It made Tinkerbell want to run straight out of the front door. She couldn't do that, however, because she felt that if she left through that door headed toward adventure once more, she would never come back. Instead, she flew straight up through the same skylight that had just filled her lungs with much needed air.
