Chapter 17: Words of the Queen
Tinkerbell slowly waved her hand in front of the queen's face to test if she could see anything. Watcherlyn grabbed Tinkerbell's arm and scolded her with a stern look.
"Don't berate the girl, Watcherlyn. Her curiosity is admirable." Said Queen Esmintu. Still, only the mouth moved. Chills went down Tinkerbell's spine as the queen spoke.
"Can you see us?" Tinkerbell asked; leaning in toward the queen as if intending to kiss her. No physical reaction came from the queen in response to the invasion of her personal space.
"I can sense you." Said the queen "Your hopes, your dreams, your desires; I feel it all."
"Even with your eyes closed?"
"Looking upon you visually would only serve to hinder my mind's eye. Besides, closing my eyes allows me to better focus on the many elders that currently inhabit the palace." Tinkerbell thought on the queen's words and all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.
"You're the reason that time is so distorted in this place." Tinkerbell stated to no one in particular. She was simply working out the problem out loud.
"I bend to the will of the other elders. Some desire to spend exorbitant amounts of time leisurely perusing the books in the library, so I slow down time for them. Others would rather find the information they desire as quickly as possible, so I allow them to exist in an accelerated time frame." Said Queen Esmintu; merely offering up the information for anyone who might want to hear it.
By this point, the queen had taken to her feet and glided over to her intricately carved throne at the other end of the room. Watcherlyn, following royal protocol, knelt before the queen with her right arm covering her eyes. Tinkerbell did the same. They did so because it is shunned upon in Neverland for common fairies to look upon the queen when she sits on the throne.
"We honor our queen." Started Watcherlyn, saying the customary greeting to the queen.
"Please, look upon me." Responded the queen. Tinkerbell and Watcherlyn removed their arms from their eyes and stood in front of the queen.
"We come seeking advice on helping a human to leave Neverland." Watcherlyn spoke loudly, just shy of yelling, as was customary. In Neverland one must speak loudly to the queen so that she never has to ask you to repeat yourself. Tinkerbell was not accustomed to all of these regulations and rules so she just stayed quiet and let Watcherlyn take the lead.
"A human leaving Neverland? That duty belongs to the pirates does it not?" Asked Queen Esmintu. She was speaking to Watcherlyn but looking at Tinkerbell.
"No!" Screamind Tinkerbell, forgetting all formalities and breaking tradition. She ran up to the queen's throne and grabbed her hand. "The Pirates will kill him! Please, he is just a boy. His name is Pan and his job is to Peter. Although I am unsure of what his work entails, I trust he is a good, hard working boy. There must be a way for him to leave Neverland without encountering the pirates. Please!" Tinkerbell knelt before the queen, still holding tightly to her hand.
The queen showed a look of surprise yet amusement and Watcherlyn let out a large gasp. Apparently Peter Pan had failed to accurately describe to Tinkerbell the structure of human names. She didn't understand that his name was Peter Pan and that neither word correlated to his job, or that as a child he did not have a job at all. Queen Esmintu, instead of correcting Tinkerbell on her misconception, allowed the young fairy to calm down. It seemed like forever to Tinkerbell as she waited for the queen's answer to her plea.
"There is one other way for a human to leave Neverland. But, it must only be used in the most dire of circumstances." The queen finally spoke.
"I behoove you to tell us, your highness. The boy's life is at stake." Said Watcherlyn, before Tinkerbell could say any more inappropriate things.
"The two of you are very young compared to me. There is much about this world that you do not know." Said Queen Esmintu to both Watcherlyn and Tinkerbell.
"We are eager to learn." Stated Watcherlyn, Humbly. Tinkerbell waited next to her with an expectant look.
"Have you ever been so happy, so excited, that you start floating above the ground without using your wings?" Asked the queen.
Tinkerbell thought back to times when she had been her happiest and found the answer to be yes. Flying often became easier when she was in a good mood as if her wings were there just for show. At the time she had been too distracted by her happiness to notice it, but it was blatantly obvious now. Watcherlyn and Tinkerbell both nodded in answer to the queen's inquiry.
"The reason it is so easy to fly during those times is because our bodies create a fine powder when overcome with joy." Continued Queen Esmintu. "This powder dissipates as the warm feeling fades but if the dust is transferred to another being, then they would gain the ability to fly."
"So if I give Peter Pan my happy powder he will be able to fly home!?!" Asked Tinkerbell enthusiastically.
"Yes, as long as he keeps his mood upbeat the powder will allow him to fly. Although, I'm not sure 'Happy Powder' is an appropriate title."
Tinkerbell was too absorbed in her own excitement to take note of the queen's suggestion about the name of Happy Powder. She was only concerned with getting Peter Pan out of Neverland before any more harm could come to him. Quickly, she said goodbye to the queen and flew off, foregoing all of the formalities that are normally taken when leaving the presence of royalty. Queen Esmintu could only smile as she watched the spunky fairy fly off. Watcherlyn, standing obediently by the queen's side, shook her head at Tinkerbell's eagerness to return to the boy.
Tinkerbell flew as fast as she could back to Peter Pan. As she got closer, the young boy's frame came into view at the edge of the woods. He had stood there, patiently, waiting for Tinkerbell's return. The sight of him waiting for her gave Tinkerbell a combination of goosebumps on her wings and butterflies in her stomach. Flying with goosebump covered wings was an odd feeling that Tinkerbell found strangely enjoyable. Her enjoyment of the flight ended as she slowed down to hover in front of Peter Pan's face.
The boy gave Tinkerbell an expectant look as he awaited instructions on leaving Neverland. Tinkerbell knew that the necessary explanation would take a toll on her body so she took the deepest breath of her life and began. She threw all of her energy into her broad gestures, making sure not to leave anything out. Along with her overstated actions she was also speaking very rapidly. Her continuous gesturing along with her high pitched squealing (from Pan's point of view) quickly drained her energy. By the time she had finished recounting her tale, she was exhausted. As she lay crumpled and gasping for air in Peter Pan's palm, the boy repeated her words back to her for clarification.
"So I just need to get covered in your fairy dust while thinking happy thoughts and I can fly out of here?" He asked. It was a very concise rendition of Tinkerbell's exhaustive rant, and the fairy preferred the name "fairy dust" to her own idea "happy powder". She nodded vigorously to indicate that he was correct. The boy smiled that smile that made Tinkerbell want to giggle. He crouched down into a frog-like stance. This left Tinkerbell puzzled until she realized that he was waiting for her to sprinkle the fairy dust.
With all of her might, the fairy conjured up her most pleasant memories. She thought about walking into her cottage for the first time and seeing the cozy yet intricate décor. She pictured the floppy smile that was always pasted on Tinkerelias's face and how the large fairy was loyal almost to a fault. Before she knew it, she was floating effortlessly. She glided over to Peter Pan and rubbed her hands on his cheeks. Doing so prompted the boy to start chanting.
"Think good thoughts, think good thoughts." He said over and over, but not much happened. His cheeks started to glow where Tinkerbell had rubbed dust on them but other than that there was nothing. His thoughts were either not happy enough, or he wasn't thinking hard enough. Tinkerbell gave the boy a gesture that told him to be happier. This time he started saying his happy memories out loud.
"Eating candy."
"Playing with my friends."
"Fighting Pirates."
At this point the boy started to hover above the ground which offered encouragement to both Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. Peter Pan starting shouting his happiest memories to the sky and Tinkerbell was shaking so that the fairy dust would fall on the young boy's head.
"Finding a place where no one ever grows up!"
"Meeting a fairy named Tinkerbell!"
Hearing that she was part of Peter Pan's happiest memories pleased Tinkerbell to no end. She flew up even higher without trying and the boy, miraculously followed. Flailing arms and legs were to be expected as the young boy struggled to control his sporadic flight. He tried emulating the flying styles of others to get a better handle on steering. First, he tried flapping his arms like a bird but this left him stuck in one spot. Next, he pushed his arms straight out in an effort to glide. This just sent him into multiple disorienting flips.
Tinkerbell watched with worry as the boy struggled. Finally, she flew to the boy and motioned to him that he should fly with his heart not his head. She demonstrated by gliding around him a couple of times. Peter pan watched her flying effortlessly and tried to do so himself. He thrust one of his fists toward the sky and kept the other planted firmly over his heart. He then thought about where he wanted to go. It didn't take long before the boy was shooting up higher and higher. Tinkerbell tried to follow the boy but he was moving too fast. She heard him yell goodbye as he disappeared into the distance.
"Goodbye Peter Pan!" She screamed, knowing he couldn't hear her.
Watching Peter Pan leave was bittersweet for Tinkerbell. She knew that he was headed back to the place where he belonged. He was a child of the Kingdom and that's where he should live. She was still upset, however, to say farewell to a kindred spirit. She knew that like her, Peter Pan also wanted more out of life than what he had been given. She could only imagine the adventures she could have had with the boy who listed "fighting pirates" as one of his happiest memories. The times they could have had together, thought Tinkerbell, would be worth the risk of breaking Neverland law. But, it was too late to think such thoughts now. Peter Pan was gone, and Tinkerbell was left staring at the sky, wishing for another lost child to fall from it.
