Chapter 15: A Meeting of Friends

Tinkerbell raced toward the palace with excitement in her wings. Not only had the sun energized her physically, but her encounter with Peter Pan had energized her mentally. There was a permanent smile plastered on Tinkerbell's face and Peter Pan had put it there. The wind whipped past her face as she flew faster and faster. As she flew, she thought back to her most recent encounter with Peter Pan.

It felt like their first ever encounter. Technically it was the first, considering that prior to an hour ago he had never laid eyes on her before. But, once he had seen her, everything changed for the both of them. At first, they had tried talking to each other. Peter Pan was fine with whispering to the tiny fairy but Tinkerbell was burning her vocal chords trying to scream at him. Not only was the screaming hurting her throat, but even in her loudest voice Peter Pan could still only barely hear her.

After realizing that talking was not appropriate for Tinkerbell, she started using gestures to get her point across. When Peter Pan asked her yes or no questions, Tinkerbell would nod or shake her head. Staying silent, however, was impossible for Tinkerbell. When doing the gestures for Peter Pan she would also speak in her normal tone. This speech sounded like a high pitched bell whenever Peter Pan heard it. The young boy would laugh every time he heard Tinkerbell's voice combined with her overstated gestures. His laughter was contagious so Tinkerbell always ended up giggling as well.

They conversed until dark about anything they could think of. Peter Pan told Tinkerbell about what life was like in the Kingdom, a name he had started using after reading Tinkerbell's letters. He told her that in the Kingdom, children have parents that take care of them until they grow up. He then added that his parents had died a long time ago. It had been so long since their death, he told her, that he couldn't even remember their faces. There was no one to take care of Peter Pan so he ended up living on the streets of London as a beggar child.

Tinkerbell's heart sank as he told her about his struggle to survive on the street. She cringed when he recounted the tale of being so hungry that he killed and cooked a sewer rat. He reassured Tinkerbell that it wasn't as bad as it sounded. Sometimes homeless adults would look out for him. He learned things from these adults about how to survive on the city streets. The hardest part of his life, he mentioned, was hiding from the police. If he was caught by the cops, they would take him to an orphanage. Peter Pan shuddered as he said the word "orphanage" as if it were the worst thing in the world. Tinkerbell had never heard the word before, but from the way Pan said it, she knew it must be a horrendous place.

After Peter Pan told of life in the Kingdom, it was Tinkerbell's turn. The boy had many questions about this new world he found himself in, and Tinkerbell tried her best to answer all of them with her gestures. She depicted to Peter Pan what life in Neverland was like. She recounted to him the tales of Neverland as far back as she knew. It was difficult for her to act out the Great War between the humans and fairies, but she tried her best. She looked insane as she rolled around mimicking the humans with their guns. Peter Pan laughed hysterically after watching Tinkerbell act out the story of her blooming.

After using her extremities to depict the spastic fireworks that came from her tulip, she was exhausted and had to rest. Once she was rested, she continued with her story. The gestures became a lot simpler to act out as Tinkerbell got to the topic of Tinkerelias. Although the fairy was large, he was always gentle with Tinkerbell. As she depicted the story of the day she moved in with Tinkerelias, she pulled the wooden rabbit out of her pocket and showed it to Peter Pan. It looked smaller than a grain of rice in the boy's hand, but his face showed that he understood its importance. He took care to make sure that he didn't hurt the already injured rabbit. Tinkerbell took the rabbit back after a short period of time and placed it safely back into her pocket.

The sky soon darkened around the fairy and the boy, who now considered themselves to be friends, and Tinkerbell had to leave. As she rose from the ground, a solemn mood flooded her head. Peter Pan followed her in rising. He walked next to her floating form, slowly picking up his pace. Tinkerbell sped up as well and before she knew it, the two of them were in an all out race. The two kept up with each other step for step, or step for flight. Peter Pan truly looked like a carefree child as he galloped past the trees. Tinkerbell too was able to let her worries slip aside as she soared next to him. As they reached the edge of the forrest, Peter Pan started to slow down. He knew that it would be dangerous for him out in the open. He stopped at the tree line and waved an enthusiastic goodbye to Tinkerbell. She continued on her journey as the boy's image faded away in the background.
