CHapter 10: A Secret of Secrets

Tinkerbell landed in front of a two story hut with a bright red door. As she stepped up to ring the doorbell, she noticed the gold embossed letters on the door that read CF&GK. She rang the bell rapidly, wanting to get off the street as quickly as possible. The door opened a crack as Growerkay peeped out at Tinkerbell with one cautious eye.

"Who is it?" Changerfaye yelled from inside the house. Growerkay silently opened the door so that Changerfaye could see for herself.

"I need your help." Stated Tinkerbell as she stepped into the extravagant hut that included two bedrooms, a foyer, and a sun room. Tinkerbell wondered how these two fairies had persuaded the home tinkers to build such a large home for only two occupants.

"Help with what?"

"I need an outfit for a small human child, about eight or nine years old."

"Shouldn't you be asking the human tinkers for that? I'm only a changer and Kay is a grower."

"True, but your job is to deal with the growth spurts of puberty and Growerkay is tasked with helping humans to grow from womb to grave. It won't seem odd for either of you to commission an outfit from the human tinkers."

"Why do you even need a human outfit? You don't know any humans."

"I want.... To.... Make a human size statue of myself!" As soon as Tinkerbell said this, she knew how idiotic it sounded. Why would a fairy want to make a human size statue of themselves? She fully expected Changerfaye to question the obviously made up excuse.

"Fine." Said Changerfaye. "I will get you your outfit, but only on one condition."

"What is it?"

"You have to return home. Tinkerelias has been tearing up all five fairy villages looking for you. And while I don't care for most of the brutish home tinkers, Tinkerelias is different. That sweet boy doesn't deserve this from you. Go home Tinkerbell, and stay there."

Tinkerbell agreed to go straight home after leaving Changerfaye's house and in turn, Changerfaye promised to get the outfit ready as soon as possible. Growerkay sat in the corner watching this entire exchange with a silent frown. On her way out, Tinkerbell locked eyes with Growerkay. The look that the thin blond fairy had on her face sent more shame into Tinkerbell's heart than any amount of scolding or screaming could have. She knew it was wrong of her to run off without telling anyone where she was going.

Tinkerelias was nowhere to be found when Tinkerbell arrived at their home. She walked through the door and felt instant remorse upon seeing the state of the hut. It was immaculate. Not only had Tinkerelias cleaned up the mess that Tinkerbell created, but he had patched up her shredded curtains and hung them back on the windows. Her bed was made and, in her current state of exhaustion, it seemed extremely welcoming. Her body was heavy as she sunk into the plush bed. Ouch she thought through the haze of pre-sleep as the wooden rabbit's lone ear poked her in the side. Of course the rabbit was still in her pocket. He would always be there for her, always.

His breath was hot and loud. Tinkerbell tried to ignore it, she was so tired, but it was just too loud. She opened her eyes and stifled a shriek as she found Tinkerelias's face less than two inches from her own. What she was startled by most was not the fact that he was so close, but his appearance. His mop-like hair was gone and in its place was a clean shaven head. Tinkerbell knew that he had to shave his head. It was required of all male home fairies. But, she didn't know the time would come so soon and she was extremely upset that she hadn't been there to support him when he did it.

Tinkerelias loved his hair, and so did Tinkerbell. She imagined it had been a struggle to get the large fairy into a chair for his haircut. Since his birth, Tinkerelias had continued to grow like an uncontrollable weed. Currently, Tinkerslay was the only home fairy that was larger than Tinkerelias. Tinkerbell believed that it must have taken at least five fairies to hold Tinkerelias down for his haircut.

He was sleeping in the most awkward position. His head rested on the pillow while his right hand held a death grip on the headboard. His right knee was on the bed but his foot dangled over the side. The oddest part was the left side of his body. His left arm and leg were both firmly on the ground as if he were trying to do a pushup with the arm while kneeling on the leg. Tinkerbell wondered how he could possibly be comfortable.

"Tinkerelias?" She said in a quiet tone. He didn't stir a bit.

"Tinkerelias." She said slightly louder. He stirred for a second before returning to a coma-like sleep.

"Tinkerelias!" She said at the top of her voice. All he did was begin to snore.

"Elias." She said as softly as possible in the tinker's ear. His eyes popped open and he looked at Tinkerbell with a mixture of relief and gratitude. This was the first time that Tinkerbell had ever called him just "Elias". Fairies are very proper creatures especially when it comes to titles. Unless two fairies are incredibly close, they always refer to each other by both their job title and name. For Tinkerbell to call him Elias instead of Tinkerelias meant that she held him in the highest regard. Usually, only twins and married fairies called each other by their names alone.

"You're back, Bell." Said Tinkerelias. This was also his first time calling Tinkerbell by just her name. It made her blush.

"I'm sorry I left." Tinkerbell said in a serious tone with her eyes focused on his shaved head.

"I missed you. Where did you go?" Tinkerelias asked with downcast eyes as he rubbed his head self-consciously.

"I just flew until I couldn't fly anymore." She answered, only feeling slightly guilty for lying. After all, she did technically fly until she was forced to stop out of concern for Peter Pan. It wasn't even a lie, just an omission of facts. Tinkerbell wished she didn't have to omit anything, but the situation was dangerous. She had broken Neverland law by saving Peter Pan from the pirates and if Tinkerelias knew, he might be considered an accomplice. Worst of all, there was a chance the solvers could find out. The thought of the solvers showing up at her front door sent a chill down Tinkerbell's spine.

Solvers are the most reclusive of all the fairies. Unlike the other four fairy jobs; tinker, changer, watcher, and grower; solvers do not work every day. Their only job is to solve problems that arise among the fairy population. These fairies live apart from all other fairies in a small village on the outskirts of Neverland. Home solvers, human solvers, weather solvers, plant solvers, and animal solvers live together in one village and often only interact with each other.

In fact the only other fairies that interact with solvers are watchers. Because it is the job of the watcher to keep an eye on other fairies, it is also a watchers' job to inform the solvers when a fairy has broken the law. Crime is rare in Neverland so whenever the solvers are called into duty, all of them travel together. All twenty solvers, four from each fairy type, set off from their dark village to dole out punishment on the deserving. Tinkerbell had never actually seen a solver before, which made her extremely grateful. If you have the misfortune of meeting a solver, then pain and sadness is not far behind.
