Chapter 15 - Recommendations
It wasn't all that hard to get Tensei to remember. Tenya knew him better than anyone, so he was able to pinpoint his core memory without Izuku's help. It also wasn't hard to get an appointment at UA under the guise of his brother recommending Tenya to the hero course. Old alumni often recommended family members to the school, it wasn't that unusual. It's how Shoto got in, after all. That and a quick quirk test, but that was more of a formality.
"Alright Tenya, remember the plan," Tensei told him as they stepped out of the car. "Allow me to talk with the faculty. You focus your efforts on Yaoyorozu."
"I understand," Tenya nodded, walking beside his older brother as they entered the building. They came up with this plan together with some of the other alliance members. Both Tenya and Shoto would be here to encourage Momo to find her confidence, to remind her of the person she had become- or will be. While Tensei would chat with the teachers, prodding and poking based on detailed reports from Izuku in order to get their memories back. "Good luck, brother."
"You too, Tenya," Tensei smiled, ruffling Tenya's hair before they parted ways. Tensei loudly greeted Snipe while Tenya went to sit down next to Shoto in the hallway. There were several chairs aligned alongside the wall, serving as a waiting area. They'd each have a sort of interview with one of the teachers in order to judge their personalities, but Tenya knew it was more of a formality. Having a trash personality wouldn't be as much of a deal breaker as it should be.
"Momo isn't here yet," Shoto told him. Tenya nodded in response, but didn't react otherwise.
"How are you holding up?" he asked instead, making Shoto groan.
"I hate my father a little more every day," he huffed.
"And yet you love him."
"And yet I love him," Shoto sighed. "Family is a strange thing, isn't it? I guess it's a little easier to accept when you know what drove him to this, but still... How are you handling the situation with your brother?"
Changing the subject, alright then. Tenya knew Shoto had it rough right now, so he wouldn't push if his friend was uncomfortable with sharing.
"We're going to try to avoid what happened in Hosu City," Tenya said. "That way he doesn't have to retire and none of us have to risk getting hurt."
"Does Izuku know about that plan?" Shoto asked, a little surprised.
"There's no reason to needlessly worry him," Tenya said. "You know how he can get... Besides, there is still time."
Yes, they both knew how he could get. How obsessive his behavior was when it came down to maintaining the timeline, a compulsion that was only reinforced by the awful consequences of different decisions he made. Every time Izuku tried to change things for the better, it ended up worse than before. Was their original timeline really the best outcome? Had they hit the jackpot without knowing it? Or was it a side effect Jikan didn't account for? A constant, as if their new reality wanted to return back to its previous state.
Still, the temptation to try and change things was hard to resist, and Tenya couldn't deny his brother his independence. To be able to live without compromise, without having to give up his career, without losing any and all feeling in his legs- Tenya didn't want to see his brother end up in a wheelchair ever again, not if there were things they could do to prevent it. He knew how Izuku would react, knew it was a selfish desire, all things considered, but he just had to try.
"...Izuku won't be happy about this," Shoto hummed. "It's better if you tell him ahead of time, though. If he finds out you changed things afterwards-"
"I know," Tenya said. Their friendship was on the line here. If he went through with this without informing Izuku... Well, he wouldn't be able to call himself a member of the 1-A alliance anymore, and Izuku surely wouldn't call him his friend anymore, either. He'd have betrayed his trust and Tenya would accept any and all consequences if that were to happen. It won't, though. He'll tell him, he just had to find the right moment.
It looked like Shoto wanted to say something else, but he closed his mouth before he had the chance to speak, staring at something behind Tenya. When he turned to look, he could see Momo walking their way, looking all shy and nervous. It wasn't the person they came to know through their years at UA High, at least, not yet.
"Is this the waiting area for the recommendation interview?" she asked.
"Yes, Tenya Iida, nice to meet you," Tenya stated, holding out his hand as he got up from his seat.
"Oh! Momo Yaoyorozu, nice to meet you too," she smiled, shaking his hand.
"Shoto Todoroki," Shoto added, watching as she sat down next to Tenya. It was silent after that, Momo too anxious to start a conversation and the boys too busy figuring out what would be the best way to bring up time travel without sounding like lunatics. Of course, Shoto tended to care way less about his image than Tenya did. "So have you heard of Eraserhead? He'll be our teacher if we get in."
"I've been told he's an underground hero," Momo nodded. "Oh, that's right! You two come from hero families, right? It must be nice to have such role models to look up to."
"Not really," Shoto muttered. "Anyway, remember when you tricked Eraserhead into your trap during our practical exam in our first year? No one else could've come up with something like that. You're a true genius."
"Wha-"
"You always come up with the best plans," Tenya added. "I've always admired that about you."
"...Thank you?" Momo said slowly, frowning as she rubbed the side of her head. It was working, but they weren't there yet. All they needed now was to push through, to keep talking about the future- about their past, in order to bring back her memories.
"Assembly," Tenya blurted out, trying to push her over the edge. "The name of our alliance, remember? You were the one who helped work out the concept after Katsuki came with the idea."
"You made business cards," Shoto added, remembering the cards Momo made, not only in their original timeline, but in a few after, too. "I liked the minimalist style of the design."
"Thank you," Momo chuckled. "I, uh, I got some inspiration from the M2B logo- The company of Katsuki's parents."
Right, M2B. Masaru and Mitsuki Bakugou. It was their designer-support company, one of the most known brands in hero fashion in Japan. Their slogan was 'Aim to be the best!', wordplay on the pronunciation of their company name. Shoto remembered when the class found out about it through Izuku's rambling. Katsuki had been embarrassed when admitting his parents helped him design and make his hero outfit, but it didn't take long for him to start bragging about his free and quick access to support items and such.
"Yeah, he told me about that," Shoto smiled. "Welcome back."
"I wish I could say it was good to be back but," Momo frowned, "which loop are we on now?"
"The fifth," Tenya informed her. "Which means it's about time we put a stop to this."
"I agree," Momo nodded. "Who else has regained their memories? Are... Are Izuku and Katsuki okay? After-"
Right. After Katsuki...
"They're fine for as far as we can tell, but seeing them in person has been proven difficult, so I really can't say," Shoto told her.
"Oh," she mouthed. "And, uh, how did... How did Izuku react when he heard that Katsuki-"
"He doesn't know," Tenya said. No, Izuku didn't know. It was for the best, probably, but that didn't mean they liked keeping something so big from their friend.
"What? He doesn't- How can he not know about-?" Momo asked in surprise, or maybe it was more like shock.
"Katsuki asked us not to say anything," Shoto said. "I don't like it either."
"We must respect his wishes," Tenya reminded him. "It's a...sensitive subject, after all. We don't know how Izuku will react if he were to find out, and since time rewinded again, there aren't any direct consequences to...what happened."
"No direct consequences? Are you kidding me?" Momo hissed, trying to keep her voice down as it resonated down the hall. "Katsuki- He needs therapy. Serious therapy."
"You think we haven't suggested that already?" Shoto snorted. "He's not having any of it. Besides, which therapist can possibly understand what we've gone through?"
"...One that's gone through the same," Momo breathed, her eyes widening, getting that familiar spark in them like every time she had an idea. Like whenever she had planned out a new strategy that she was sure was going to work. "If we bring back Shiemi then-"
"Hold up, Momo," Tenya said. "Shiemi is good at what she does, but she's an outsider. A civilian. She has nothing to do with this. We shouldn't involve her in this mess."
"I know but-"
"But nothing," Tenya interrupted her. "It's bad enough we need to involve as many heroes as we do, considering the original size of the operation. We're not involving unsuspecting civilians, definitely not when their lives aren't directly affected by our mistakes."
Calling in unprepared back-up was still looked down upon in the hero world. Not being able to complete the mission you were given, the one you prepared for, and having to involve heroes who had nothing to do with it to get the job done... You'd take a hit in the rankings, for sure. The Hero Commission pushed for results, and with fewer heroes than before, it meant everyone had to be close to perfect at their job in order to please them. Shoto knew that, knew where Tenya was coming from when he said that, but he hadn't expected him to care about it as much as he did, not in this phase of their predicament.
It was clear they weren't making it out without outside help, so what was the harm in involving their therapist? If anything, it would probably get rid of some of the internal tension within their team.
"...Alright," Momo sighed, giving in. "But I'll be bringing this up again with the others. We can bring it to a vote. Does that sound acceptable to you?"
"I suppose," Tenya frowned, clearly not pleased with that response. It didn't take long for Tensei to get the teachers on their side, since they were called into the faculty room shortly after. Instead of taking the interview and some basic tests, they spend the rest of the day explaining and informing the UA staff of what had happened so far. Any new theories and happenings, who had their memories and who didn't, what they were planning to do moving forward.
"I'll contact young Midoriya right away," All Might told them after they assured everyone that both Izuku and Katsuki were doing okay. At least, as far as they could tell. "If Jikan wants to interfere with the quirk transfer, it's best to do it as quickly as possible."
"Is his body ready for that?" Momo asked.
"It should be," Shoto told them. "I heard he's been training with Katsuki for quite some time now."
"Speaking of the other problem child," Aizawa sighed, "Is he...stable? Do we need to worry about any reckless or repetitive behavior?"
"He's stable," Shoto said. "He has Izuku by his side again, after all."
"Right," the pro hero mumbled, frowning. He was probably thinking up ways to confront Katsuki about what happened without triggering him in the worst possible way. They didn't even know if they could stand to be around Eraserhead yet, whether they'd gotten over their trauma as Nomu, or at least learned how to deal with it. Yeah, there was no way those problem children were as fine as they claimed to be. "We'll be making our own professional judgment later."
"Of course," Shoto nodded. He hadn't expected anything else. "Is there anything else you need to know? Any questions?"
"I think that's about it," Present Mic told them. "You kids can go home, we'll contact your parents to say the tests are over. I take it you're leaving with your brother?"
"Yes, we'll leave once he finishes up his small talk," Tenya confirmed. Shoto sighed. Well, it was fun to be away from home while it lasted... Now it was back to defying Endeavor, back to enduring his rage. No, it was never rage, not really. And if it was, it wasn't towards Shoto, but more so towards himself. Self hatred, because he wasn't able to stop what happened to Toya. Resentment, because now they were stuck in this vicious cycle, of this nightmare of his own making.
"Are you going to be okay?" Momo asked, clearly worried about him.
"I'll be fine," Shoto sighed. "Nothing I haven't been through before."
"That doesn't make it okay," Momo stated. "Call me if you need anything, okay? I'm here for you."
"Thank you," he said. It wouldn't be necessary, but he was still grateful she offered help at all. Others had done the same, basically every Assembly member to regain their memories had offered to support him in any way they could. It was no use, though. Shoto just had to bear this burden for a little while longer, just until his father was brought up to speed. "I'm sure things will get better soon, so you don't have to worry about me."
"I always worry," she laughed. "I didn't get the nickname 'the class mom' for nothing, you know? But seriously, call, okay? I mean it."
"I will," Shoto promised.
