Chapter 38
Everyone was racing around, making last-minute preparations. As the minutes ticked by, everyone was in an excited frenzy; the closer it came to the ceremony, the more hectic the atmosphere became. I could feel the anticipation building up.
I stood behind a curtain near the back of the roof, concealed from the audience. The only people who were back there with me at the moment were Lydia: my maid of honor, Adam: who would be walking me down the aisle in place of my father, and Sky: a young girl that I didn't know very well, but the Deetz really seemed to like her. Lydia had recommended her as the flower girl, and I had agreed. I didn't regret my decision one bit when I saw how sweet and how eager to please the young girl was.
She was still a little wary of Betelgeuse, which was completely understandable, but was also starting to warm up to him, slowly but surely.
"Well, this is it," Lydia said, helping me tuck away a few stray hairs. "This is your big moment."
I smiled at her. "I know. I feel like I want to burst into song, but also puke at the same time."
She laughed. I grinned at her.
"Okay, well, I gotta go, but I'll see you on the other side," Lydia told me, making her way to where the rest of the bridesmaids and groomsmen were. I gave her a parting wave. She returned it.
Before I knew it, it was Sky's cue, and she began to gracefully trail petals down the aisle. I let out a nervous, shaky breath, squeezing my eyes shut tightly. I felt a warm hand clasp my own. I looked down to find my hand interlaced with Adam's, and shifted my gaze upwards to see his kind, reassuring, smiling face. I smiled back.
"Hey, Chickadee, you'll be alright. I know this kind of thing can be really scary, after all, it's a big commitment. But you'll find that it's the best decision you'll ever make in your life."
He had this far-away look in his eyes, and I was certain he was thinking about Barbara. I smiled at him, once more.
"Thank you, Adam. I don't know what I'd do without you," I said, leaning up on tiptoe to give him a quick kiss on the cheek.
He grinned at me and squeezed my hand reassuringly. "Any time, Chickadee."
The bridal march started playing. I took another deep breath as Adam handed me my bouquet and led me out from behind the curtain. The guests all stood and turned to face me. I noticed that all of my relatives were on my left side, and Betelgeuse's guests from the Netherworld were on my right. I then noticed that in the front row on the right side, Amalie, Francesco, and the twins were all sitting with Melody. I smiled. Melody grinned and waved. I gave her the ghost of a wave back.
My gaze shifted to straight ahead to light on Betelgeuse: all cleaned up, hair not quite as unkempt as usual, black suit crisp, and eyes blinking back happy tears. I smiled at him.
I finally reached him, joining my hands with his as I stood across from him on the raised platform.
"You look beautiful," he told me, his voice wavering as he fought for composure.
I blushed and smiled at him. "Lawrence," I whispered, "this ceremony is going to break my curse, too."
His neon green eyes widened in shock. "(Y/N).... are you, are you serious?"
I nodded, blinking back tears of my own.
Betelgeuse gave me a large, jagged-toothed grin, and I could tell he was fighting the massive urge to scoop me up then and there and spin me around in pure glee.
I then noticed Charles for the first time.
"Are you two ready to begin?" he asked, holding a large book.
"I didn't know you were ordained," I told him quietly, my head tilted in confused amusement.
"Well, according to the 3-day, online course Delia signed me up for, I am, now."
I chuckled softly, and Betelgeuse nodded, causing Charles to clear his throat.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..."
Charles' voice faded out of my mind as I began to mull over prospects of the future before me.
I was finally going to be free of my curse. No more worrying about watching all of my friends and family die. No more living a long, unhappy existence. I wouldn't be alone, anymore. I would have my family and friends beside me.
And now Lawrence.
I would finally be united with the man I loved. After years and years of thinking I was never going to see him again, here I was, about to be his wife. I could have a family with him. The thought made my heart flutter with excitement.
Before I knew it, we had exchanged rings, and Charles was asking us the oh-so famous questions.
"Do you, (Y/N) (Y/L/N), take Lawrence Shoggoth to be your your lawfully wedded husband?"
I smiled at Betelgeuse. "I do."
Charles turned to the demon. "And do you, Lawrence Shoggoth, take (Y/N) to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I do," he said, beaming at me.
"Then, by the power vested in me from 'getordainedquick.com', I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Betelgeuse wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close to him. I wrapped my arms around his neck before pressing my lips to his. As he hugged me close during the kiss, I felt a rush of energy all around me. We both pulled away, still holding one another. My eyes stared in wonder as I saw the green and gold light swirling all around us, hiding everyone from our view. The light was bright and glittering, but not blinding. It was beautiful.
I felt something shift inside of me as the hurricane of energy slowly faded away, and I knew that the curse was broken for both of us. Not much had physically changed with Betelgeuse, but I noticed he had a new light in his eyes, his skin was a rosy, fleshy color, and he was warm. I smiled up at him as everyone stood and clapped.
"Welcome back, Lucy," I told him. He grinned back at me, his teeth still as sharp as before.
"Welcome to the beginning, Angel," he told me, hugging me close.
I smiled, leaning my face against his broad chest.
As cliché and cheesy as it sounds, I thought I had finally gotten my perfect fairytale ending.
I thought I was going to finally have the life with Lawrence that I had always dreamed about.
I thought that I was finally united with Lawrence, and nothing could take him away from me.
Oh, how wrong I was.
