Chapter 26
My hearing was the first thing to come back. I woke to someone violently sobbing. I realized that it was Larry.
"Y-you keep saying everything's gonna be okay, but it's not! She just died, and I d-don't think she was ready for t-the whole 'being dead' thing!" he sobbed.
I heard Lydia's exasperated sigh.
"Beej, I swear you're so dramatic."
"Dramatic???" he gasped incredulously, doing his best to not choke up. "SHE JUST FREAKING DIED AND YOU'RE SAYING I'M DRAMATIC??? This can't be happening to me again," I heard him whimper behind his hands.
My sight came back, along with memories from my and Larry's talk right before I collapsed. My eyes snapped open and I sat up abruptly.
Larry jerked back in surprise.
"(Y-Y/N)??" he whispered through his tears.
I immediately started to sob and threw myself into his arms, clinging to him for dear life.
"H-how are you.... how are you alive?" he asked softly almost to himself, wrapping his arms around me gently.
"L-Lawrence! I found y-you!" I gasped between sobs. I pulled back to see that he and Lydia both wore the same perplexed look.
"I never told you his full name," Lydia mumbled, glancing at me suspiciously.
I smiled at her through my tears. "You didn't have to. Because I once knew a gentleman named Lawrence Betelgeuse Shoggoth a long time ago."
I glanced at him, and his eyes had grown a couple of sizes.
"You- you knew me when I was.... alive?" I nodded. "Who... who are you?"
I smiled. "My name is (Your Full First Name) (Your Full Last Name). And I lied to you," I told him, pulling my pendant out from under my sweatshirt. "I didn't get this at a pawnshop. I've worn it every second since that day in 1811 when the steamship went down."
He stared at me in disbelief, his emerald eyes quickly brimming with tears again.
"(Y/Full/N)?" he breathed.
I nodded, my breath hitching and tears spilling down my face.
He quickly brought his lips to mine, kissing me hungrily, passionately. Oh, how I had longed for this. I had lost all hope of ever being held in his arms again, but now I felt joy and happiness swell in my chest.
When we both pulled apart, we were both partially laughing and crying.
"I can't believe it's you!" he said, smiling at me with that crooked grin of his. He wiped away his tears, and I did the same.
"It's me! I just.... can't believe it. You're... you're dead!" I replied, my mind racing.
He chuckled. "Dead as dead can be, babes! But, how in God/satan's name are you alive??"
"Oh, that. Well, you see, I was cursed to be immortal when I was a baby, in order to save me, since I was born sickly and prematurely."
"Cursed, huh? Me too. I'm cursed to be invisible to the living, with a few exceptions, unless one of the living says my name three times. The curse is broken and I become alive again if I marry a breather. That's why... Lydia and I... well, yeah, let's not relive it."
"Wait, so Beej was the guy that hung himself because he didn't know about your curse?" Lydia asked me incredulously.
I smiled and nodded. "Yup. Which is why I got so choked up on that cemetery tour."
She nodded. "Sorry about asking you to take pics, that was probably really weird and hard for you."
I waved away her apology. "It's fine."
Betelgeuse arched an eyebrow in confusion. "Pics?"
"Oh! I never showed you!" Lydia jumped up and took off down the hall to her bedroom. A few seconds later, she was back with her camera.
She plopped down onto the bed beside Beej and turned her camera on. She quickly clicked through the pictures until she found the ones I had taken. She tilted the camera so he could see. He chuckled darkly.
"I love that, Lyds. I'm just surprised you actually found my grave."
I was staring off into space, wondering about my luck.
"Whatcha thinking 'bout, babes?" Beej asked me, nudging my elbow with his.
I smiled at him. "Just about how lucky I am."
"Lucky? How?"
"Well, for one, to have such an amazing partner," I grabbed his hand while Lydia made gagging noises in the background, "the fact that Lydia, Charles, and Delia were in the right place at the right time and offered me a job, and for another, I was afraid I was going to have to try to forget Lawrence for Larry's sake. But, you were standing right in front of me this entire time! So now I don't have to choose, because they're both you."
I smiled up at him, and he gave me a tears-eyed smile.
"God, you're gonna make me cry again," he said, laughing and wiping his eyes.
"Yikes, are you guys gonna be like this all the time, now?" Lydia asked us.
I smirked.
"Oh, what? You don't wanna watch us make out?" I asked, pulling on Beej's t-shirt collar flirtily, while he wrapped his arms around my waist and his forked snake-tongue flicked the side of my cheek teasingly.
Lydia made a show of rushing hurriedly out of the room with one hand clapped over her mouth, the other clutching her stomach.
Beej and I laughed as we heard her fake-gags retreat down the hall.
