i. Smith and Jones

Lena stood, rolling her eyes. "All of space and time, you said, and I'm stuck with you in a hospital .. on earth." She raised her voice slightly at the end. "Oh, Lena, don't be like that; this can be as exciting as all of space and time." She couldn't tell if he was being serious or not, but before she could ask, the curtain flew open.

"Now then, Mr Smith, a very good morning to you. How are you today?" The man asked cheerfully. "Oh, not so bad. Still a bit, you know . . . Blah." By the way, he answered, you wouldn't guess he was ill.

"John Smith, admitted yesterday with severe abdominal pains. . . Jones, why don't you see what you can find? Amaze me."

Lena watched as the woman made her way to the side of the bed, the exact side Lena was on. "Oh, am I in your way? I'm so sorry," The brunette said, sounding apologetic.

"Oh, you're alright, don't worry." Lena flashed her an appreciating smile.

She watched as the woman turned her attention to the Doctor. "It wasn't very clever running around outside, was it?" Lena furrowed her brows and looked at him in confusion. "Sorry?" "On Chancellor Street, this morning. Came up to me and took your tie off." even more confused,

Lena looked over at him. "I've been with you all day. When did you do that?" He looked at her and then back at the other woman. "Really? What did I do that for?" A dumbfounded expression took over Lena's features. "Okay, or just ignore me, that's fine too."

The black-haired woman smiled awkwardly before replying, "I don't know, you just did."  "Not me. I was here in bed. Ask the nurses." fully convinced of that. Martha was now the one confused. "Well, that's weird 'cause it looked like you. Have you got a brother?" she questioned. "No, not anymore. Just me," he responded casually.

"As time passes and I grow ever more infirm and weary, Miss Jones . . ." The older man said, smiling, but anyone could hear the annoyance in his voice. "Sorry." She apologized quickly, laughing it off.  "Right." Lena watched as she took the stethoscope and placed it on his chest. This was the part she was worried about most.

Lena watched closely as the woman's facial expression changed. She watched as she placed the stethoscope on one side and quickly moved it to the other. The black-haired woman looked up at Lena, confused; in return, Lena flashed an innocent smile. "I weep for future generations. Are you having trouble locating the heart, Miss Jones? The old man said, very clearly annoyed this time.

She took off the stethoscope, smiling uncomfortably now. "Um, I don't know. Stomach cramps?" shaking her head a bit. "That is a symptom, not a diagnosis." still smiling but very clearly fed up. "And you rather failed basic techniques by not consulting first with the patient's chart."

As quickly as the chart was picked up, it was dropped even quicker as the clipboard seemed to shock the older man. "That happened to me this morning."  "I had the same thing on the door handle."   "And me, in the lift." Confused, Lena looked down at the Doctor, mouthing the word, "What?" in response, he shrugged his shoulders and shook his head. "How helpful." she thought.

"Well, it's only to be expected." the man said as he picked the chart back up, "There is a thunderstorm moving in, and lighting is a form of static electricity, as was first proven by . . . Anyone?" looking around to see if anyone knew the answer. "Benjamin Franklin." the Doctor answered. "Correct."

"My mate, Ben. That was a day and a half. I got rope burns off that kite. And then I got soaked." "Quite."  "And then I got electrocuted!" he finished off with a smile. The older doctor looked at Lena with a questioning look. "Delusional, write it down in the chart." She said with a very uncomfortable smile, pointing toward the clipboard in his hands. "Moving on."

As they walked away, Lena overheard the older male say, "I think perhaps a visit from psychiatrist." to which she laughed, "Oh great, now they're gonna think I'm mad because of you." An offended look took over the brunette's features. "Me? You're the one talking about being "mates" with a man who died in the 1700s, but I'm the reason they think you're mad."

– Lena had been attempting to sleep as the hospital was horribly boring, but she was awoken to the sound of people all over the hospital panicking; trying to find out what was going on, she went to the window to look at what everyone else was. She couldn't believe her eyes to look out and see they were on the moon, the actual moon.

Not knowing how to react to being on the moon, she calmly walked back over to the Doctor, her hands clasped together. "We're on the moon," she says casually. "Thank you, Lena. I hadn't noticed," he responded sarcastically. "Okay, I don't need this attitude. We were just on earth. How are we on the bloody moon?" Ignoring her again, he threw the curtain open. "Very good point!" Lena rolled her eyes. "Do you ever listen to a word I say?"

"Lena!" he said, his voice going slightly higher. "Sorry, Sorry," she responded, throwing her hands up. He turned back to the woman in front of them. "What you said now that was, in fact, brilliant. What was your name?" he questioned. "Martha," she said with a sort of disbelief. "And it was Jones, wasn't it?" Martha nodded her head.

"Well, Martha Jones's question is, how are we still breathing?" he walked up to the window, looking out. "We can't be!" one of the nurses cried out. "Obviously, we are, so don't waste my time." Feeling bad for the woman, Lena put her hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry he seems to have forgotten what manners are," she whispered.

"Martha, what have we got? Is there a balcony on this floor or a veranda?" the doctor asked, still looking around the window. "By the patients' lounge, yeah." The Doctor looked over at Lena. "You fancy going out?" Lena smiled. "With you? Always."

Lena looked over at Martha. "Coming along?" "Okay." turning his attention to Martha, the Doctor spoke, "We might die." "We might not." "Good. Come on. Not her. She'd hold us up." he pointed at the distressed nurse, who had started crying again.

– As they reached the double doors, Lena stayed closely behind the Doctor, slightly terrified to open them. They all gave each other a look and pushed open the doors slowly. Lena let out a breath of relief, realizing they could breathe. "We've got air," Martha said, surprised. "How does that work?" "Just be glad it does." the Doctor responded; knowing it was safe now, Lena walked over to the doctor standing at the end of the balcony.

"I've got a party tonight. It's my brother's 21st. My mothers gonna be really . . . really . . ." Lena watched as Martha started tearing up a bit. Lena left the Doctors side, walking over to Martha; she placed her hand on her arm, giving her an apologetic smile.

"You okay?" the man asked. "Yeah." "Sure?" "Yeah." Martha nodded her head, seemingly trying to convince herself she was okay. "Do you want to go back in?" he asked. "No way. I mean, we could die any minute, but all the same, it's beautiful." Lena looked out and saw that Martha was right; it was beautiful. They could see the earth from where they were standing and all the stars around it.

"Do you think?" the Doctor asked. "How many people want to go to the moon? And here we are." she sounded happy, but Lena couldn't tell anymore. "Standing in the Earth's light." as gorgeous as the view was, Lena couldn't help but wonder, "What do you think happened?" "What do you think?" Lena scoffed, smiling a bit. "You can never answer my questions, can you?"

"Extraterrestrial. It's got to be," Martha said, slightly unsure. "I don't know, a few years ago that would've sounded mad, but these days... That spaceship flying into Big Ben. Christmas. Those Cybermen things." she paused, sighing. "I had a cousin, Adeola. She worked at Canary Wharf. She never came home." Lena looked at her sadly. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "Yeah." Martha nodded.

"I was there, in the battle." the man said, speaking up. "It was..." he didn't finish the sentence; instead, he looked to where the earth was. "I promise you, Mr Smith, we will find a way out. If we can travel to the moon, then we can travel back. There's got to be a way." That was the only thing Martha was sure of

The Doctor stepped back from the balcony, walking to the side of it and looking around. "It's not Smith. That's not my real name," he informed her. "Who are you, then?" she questioned. "I'm the Doctor," he answered. "Me too, if I ever pass my exams," Martha replied, laughing uncomfortably. "What is it then, Dr. Smith?" she asked. "Oh no, he's absolutely serious; it's just the Doctor," Lena told her. "How do you mean, just the Doctor?" she asked puzzledly.

"Just the Doctor," he said with a bewildered look. Martha tilted her head, raising her eyebrows. "What, people call you "The Doctor"? Serious, he replied, "Yeah."

Martha shook her head and looked away back to space. "Well, I'm not. Far as I'm concerned, you've got to earn that title."

"Well, I'd better make a start then." he bent down to grab a small rock and threw it out toward the earth, but the rock didn't make it far before hitting something. "Force-Field." the Doctor stated, "Keeping the air in."

Lena looked at the Doctor. "But who would teleport a hospital onto the moon and then put a force field around it?" she questioned. "Good question." Lena backed away from the balcony, rolling her eyes.

"If that's like a bubble sealing us in, that means this is the only air we've got." Martha looked at the Doctor. "What happens when it runs out?" she asked.

A worried look took over the Doctor. "How many people in this hospital?" he asked Martha. She shrugged. "Don't know, a thousand?" "One thousand people suffocating." Lena slowly turned back to the Doctor. "Who would do that?"

Before any response could be made, the building started shaking, and a rumbling sound could be heard. "Heads up! Ask him yourself." the Doctor said, replying to Lena's last question.

Lena looked up, and above them, she saw a spaceship of sorts flying above them. She furrowed her eyebrows and watched as they started to land. Slightly scared, she backed up behind the Doctor.

"Aliens." Martha said, "That's aliens! Real, proper aliens." Lena looked at the Doctor, waiting for the input he always had. "Judoon," he said with an angry expression. Lena looked back down and watched as they marched toward the hospital.
