Chapter 40

Mia sat on a sofa while David sat on a small stool, holding his guitar in place.

"What song should I play? I'm a super fan of Ariana and -"

"You are? That make two of us then." Mia smiled. "Oops! Where are my manners? Let me prepare something for you, what's your style?" Mia asked getting up from the sofa.

"Awww. I'm not hungry. Thanks." David shook his head.

"Nonsense! How about I make, pancakes?" She asked.

"No. Seriously I'm not hungry."

"Lasagna?" Mia said walking towards her kitchen.

"Mia..." David smiled.

"Home made chicken pie? Wanna try my Italian pasta? Mac and cheese? I don't take no for an answer."

David joined her in the kitchen. "Vegetable salad."

Mia turned around to look at him. "Why that?"

"I'm a veggie."

"Seriously? Then let me make you veggie lasagna. I promise you'd lick your plate clean." Mia smiled.

David nodded slowly. "Let me help."

"Nah-uh. You're my guest, so relax." Mia shooed him away from kitchen.

It was already seven pm when Mia started cooking. Soon she started humming a song, from humming, she started singing.. Starving by Haliee Steinfield.

#You know just what to say
Shit, that scares me, I should just walk away
But I can't move my feet
The more that I know you, the more I want to
Something inside me's changed
I was so much younger yesterday, oh.. #

Mia stopped singing when she heard someone knock. When she turned, It was David she saw.

"Wow." David said in amazement.

"What?" Mia smiled at him.

"Your voice is..." David was tongue tied.

"Is What?"

"I don't know the right word. Angelic! Can you sing that song again? I'm in love with your voice right now."

Mia blushed.. "Don't pull my legs David."

"I'm serious! Il mio amore, I love it." David told her.

Mia turned on the oven and walked over to David. "You, love my voice?"

"It's brilliant! Come come come," he said pulling her into the living room quickly and getting her to seat on the couch. "Sing for me."

Mia giggled, burying her face in her palm. "I'm so shy."

"You? Shy?" He laughed. "You're only singing in front of me."

Mia looked up at him. "Okay fine." She cleared her throat. "Don't laugh."

"Why would I?"

Mia bit her lip... "I don't usually sing, but for you I will." Mia inhaled and exhaled. "#I didn't know that I was starving till I
tasted you,
Don't need no butterflies when you give me
the whole damn zoo
By the way, by the way, you do things to my body,
I didn't know that I was starving
till I tasted you.

By the way, by the way, you do things to my body
I didn't know that I was starving
till I tasted you#

David stood, playing a string of his guitar. Mia stopped singing and laughed,

"What are you doing?" Mia laughed.

"Keep singing. I'll play the guitar." He smiled.

"This is crazy." But she continued anyway. "#You know just how to make my heart beat
faster
Emotional earthquake, bring on disaster
You hit me head-on, got me weak in my knees
Yeah, something inside me's changed
I was so much younger yesterday, ye-eah
So much younger yesterday, oh, yeah

Mia found herself flowing along with David's melody.
I didn't know that I was starving
till I tasted you
Don't need no butterflies when you give me
the whole damn zoo
By the way, by the way, you do things to my body

I didn't know that I was starving
till I tasted you
By the way, by the way, you do things to my body
I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you."

"You guys totally rock!" Andrew furiously clapped his hands. "That was a mad jam!"

David and Mia hadn't notice him until he talked.

"Seriously guys, you both make a good team!" Andrew seemed impressed. "Mimi your voice was fucking amazing, I didn't know you could sing that well."

Mia turned bright red... "You're trying to mock me."

"I told you Mia, you sounded amazing." David told her.

"And you're smooth with the guitar. How'd you learn?" Mia asked him.

"I have been playing the guitar since I was eight. It's part of me now." He answered.

"You gave a mind-blowing performance. It was lit! I once played the violin but I dropped it." Mia told him.

"Hey, Mimi, I'm gonna need to do a video, starring you and David. It's for my collections. Perform whatever magic you both did, okay?" Andrew went back to his room to get his video recorder.

"Um, what's he talking about?" David asked.

"I have no idea." Mia chuckled, giving a little shrug.

Ryan entered his royalty-like room, he was a bit surprised that Layla wasn't asleep yet. She had her back resting on the headboard as she sat on the bed with the blanket over her legs.

"I thought you had slept already." Ryan asked her, walking over to the other side of the bed.

Her eyes and hands stayed on her phone. "Couldn't sleep. Have you seen David's recent post on Instagram?" She asked him.

"No. What did he do this time?" Ryan pulled the blanket over his body.

"Nothing. He posted some pictures with the caption Lasagna night. Guess who's hanging out with him." Layla said to Ryan.

"Alex?" Ryan closed his eyes. Sleep was already calling him at 12pm.

"The guest we had. Mia."

Ryan's eyes are forced open... "What?" He sat up.

"Is she friends with David too?" She asked Ryan who she handed her phone over.

Ryan squinted at the images of David and Mia. They were eating together and Mia had the widest smile on her face. They even did a duet together?! Who the hell was video taping them?! What the hell?!?

"How long have you and Mia known each other?" Layla questioned.

"About a month." He said, still examining the pictures.

"She must really have gotten a good grip on you and David. David is understandable but you, is she really that great?" Layla asked him. "Anyway, I did like her hair, do you think she wears contacts? And her skin, it was so soft and-" She's cut off when Ryan getting away from the bed.

"I'll be back." Ryan said, giving her back her phone and taking his on the nightstand.

"Where are you going?" Layla frowned.

"I need to make a call right now, don't wait for me." Ryan said to her while walking out of the room.

Ryan walked down the corridor and dialed Mia's number. It took a while, but she picked.

"Hello?" Her voice was faint and hoarsed. It seemed like she was sleeping.

"H-hey." Ryan's heart skipped. Why was he calling again? He was out of words.

"Ryan? What's wrong did something happen? Why'd you call?" Mia asked him.

"I just wanted to hear your voice." He found himself smiling.

"You did? But it's like.......... 12? Shouldn't you be sleeping?" Mia groaned tiredly.

"I also wanted to check if you were okay. Is David with you?" Ryan wasn't sure to ask, but he asked.

"Why would David be here? Okay, look, go to bed okay? I'm so damn exhausted, we'll talk later." Mia said to him.

"Sorry I called so late, and interrupted your beauty sleep. I love you." It was easy for him to say those words to her because he wanted her to know he really loved her.

"Me too." Her voice was more of a whisper.

But he heard it. "What? Universe did you just-" The phone beeped. "Hello? Hello universe?" The phone went dead. "Did she just..." Ryan fought a smile that threatened to spill on his face.

He wasn't giving up on her. She was his better half and she completed him. It even looked like the heavens agreed with him, as fate had made them bound by marriage.
......................................................

"Where are we going?" Mia asked David for the hundredth time.

"Don't worry, I'm not kidnapping you." David grinned from ear to ear. He kept on driving.

Mia decided to relax when her phone vibrated from her purse. She pulled it out from her purse. It was Ryan calling.

She glanced at David before picking the call. "What's up."

"Sweetheart where are you, let me come pick you up." Ryan was straight foward.

"Someone is happy, What's the occasion?" Mia smiled.

"Is there supposed to be an occasion to take my pretty wifey out? Tell me where you are."

"Speaking of which, have you talked to the person I asked you to talked to?" Mia frowned.

"Yeah, I did. It might take sometime. Let's say three weeks at most a month." Ryan said lazily. That was his least favorite topic.

"Three weeks? I don't have that amount of time. Do you think there's anyway I can talk to him in person?" Mia didn't want to stay married to him.

"My lawyer is a busy man." Ryan said to her.

"Please? I really need to talk to him and get things over and done with." She scratched her forehead.

"I'll get in touch with him. Why are you so eager to get rid of me?"

"Not again." Mia rolled her eyes.

"So where are you?"

"I'm out with someone. I can't meet with you." She said plainly.

"With who? Please don't tell me it's David."

Mia licked her lip... "So? What's your deal?"

"Mia... You know how I feel about David being around you. I don't trust him being around you, do you understand?"

"He's your friend."

"Exactly. He's my friend, I know what he can do. I don't want him flirting with you."

Mia chuckled... "You accused me of being jealous yesterday but you sound envious now. Stop being paranoid. And don't call unless it necessary. Bye." Mia hung up on him.

"Who was that?" David asked her.

"Who? It's someone. You don't know him." Mia said to him.

"Oh. It's a him."

Mia laughed... "Don't start."

"What, I didn't say anything." He shrugged.

Mia and David talked for a while as they drove. David finally parked the car.

"Where is this?" Mia got out, looking at the empty bleachers. It was a racing track. "And what are we doing here?" Mia looked around the seeming deserted place.

At a distance she could see two cars speeding with dust tailing behind them. They were drifting so fast and carelessly that Mia thought they'd get into an accident. The two cars headed straight for her, racing so fast. Mia's eyes widened as she saw the incoming cars moving closer. The yellow Ferrari stepped on the brakes, stopping a few inches away from Mia. The red Ferrari drove past with dust behind it, taking Mia's hair up in the wind. The red car drifted, facing Mia.

"What in the world..." Mia struggled to get her hair away from her face.

Suddenly, she heard another car zooming in, halting beside the yellow car.

Dust was up in the air and then Mia saw a figure emerge from the car. It wasn't someone she knew.

"That was fun!" Natalie slammed her car shut, waiting for the air to settle. "Still a slowpoke, are we?"

"Give me a break. It's been a month." Layla said after stepping out of the car.

Natalie chuckled, turning to see Mia who was looking at her.

Mia watched as the the lady in pink shorts and grey tank top walk towards her. The lady had this great poise and charisma, Mia looked at her with curious eyes.

"Looks like we've got company." Layla said, walking up to Mia and David.

"What's up ladies! I love crashing parties." David threw his arms around Layla and Natalie, giving them a group hug.

"David." Layla chuckled.

"Who'd you bring along?" Natalie studied Mia.

"Oh!" He placed his hand on her back. "This is Mia. She's my girlfriend." He said plainly, with a smile.

"Girlfriend?" Natalie didn't take her eyes off Mia.

Mia didn't object, but she looked surprised and out of words.

"Il mio amore, meet these two lovely ladies. Natalie and Layla." David said to Mia.

"Hey, it's nice to meet you." Mia smiled at the ladies, but the intense stare Natalie was giving her didn't go unnoticed.

"We meet again Mia." Layla steps in front of her, giving her a surprise hug.

"So you two have met?" Natalie asked.

"She was at our house yesterday. But I'm really surprised, how come Ryan never said anything about you being David's girlfriend?" Layla said to Mia.

"I'm more surprised. David has an actual girlfriend." Natalie eyed Mia up and down.

"Guys!! Who's ready for round two?!" Alex yelled, while walking towards them. Mia and David turned, to look at Alex.

"Yo buddy! Didn't know you were coming?" Alex said, fist bumping David. Alex turned to Mia. "And you brought Mia." He gave her a warming smile. "How's my number one fan doing?" He opened his arms for a hug.

Mia grinned. "Alex." She gave him a big hug.

"Great! You guys know each other." Natalie said, looking at Alex and Mia hugging. Something felt familiar about this girl but she wasn't sure.

"Did you know Mia here is David's girlfriend?" Layla said, making her hair into a messy bun.

"What?!" Alex was shocked at the news.

"Yeah. He just said so." Layla nodded.

"Seriously man? You're dating, as in dating someone, for real this time?" Alex arched his brow.

"As crazy as it sounds, yes. Mia and I are together." David said proudly.

Alex looked at Mia who hadn't said anything. "How did it happen?" He asked Mia.

Just as she was about to answer, Mia's phone rang.

"One moment please." She opened her purse to look for he phone. She eventually saw the caller ID. It was Ryan.

Argh, what did he want this time.

She looked back at Alex. "I'm gonna have to take this. Excuse me." She walked out of their midst.

They all started a conversation as soon as she walked out to pick her call.

"He-hello?" Mia made sure she got as far as she could and she turned back a couple of times before she answered.

She wouldn't have answered but she needed to breathe because she felt choked up in their midst. Her phone rang just in time, but it was the wrong caller.

"I called almost four times, why didn't you answer immediately?" Ryan asked her.

"Don't use that tone on me? I'm not obliged to pick your calls." Mia frowned. "So why are you calling this time? Have you spoken to your lawyer?" Mia asked, making sure she faced the direction of the others.

"Not yet, but I will.... So tell me, are you still with David?"

Mia scoffed... "Yeah, and guess who else is with me. Your girlfriend." She was sarcastic. "Stop trying to keep tabs on me, okay?"

"Layla's with you? Oh great, put her on the phone, let me say hi." Ryan sounded happy.

"What?" Mia scoffed sarcastically. "You must be out of your mind. You expect me to hand the phone over to your girlfriend so you could say hi?"

"You do know that Layla and I are just paired together for camera right? Stop feeling guilty over nothing, we're not doing anything wrong. That's what I wanna prove to you. Hand the phone over to Layla so that I could lessen the guilt you're feeling."

"I'm not doing that. That will only make things worse and more complicated." Mia ruffled her hair. "Ryan please stop calling me, call me when you have news about our annulment, nothing else."

Ryan didn't respond, he was silent.

"Hello? Are you there?" Mia asked.

"Why do you always do this to me? To us." He sighed... "Be safe."

Mia frowned... "Ryan, let's talk about-" She wasn't able to talk because he hung up. Why did he hang up?! Had she said something wrong?

"Mia!" Layla yelled out her name. "Come over here!"
✴✴✴✴✴

Making new friends wasn't that bad for Mia. Layla and Natalie were extremely nice people, they made her feel more than welcomed. If she was gonna be friends with Layla, she had to go further away from Ryan.

"Do you notice anything about Mia?" Natalie asked Alex when they were alone.

"Like what?" Alex sat down on the bleachers with Natalie.

Natalie looked at the race track, watching Layla, Mia and David racing. "She looked familiar but then she is familiar." She turned to Alex. "I didn't want to say anything before but I'm sure you've also noticed." Natalie said to him.

"Noticed what? That she looks a lot like... Sophie?" Alex frowned at her.

"Not just a lot. She does look like her... Except the hair and the eyes." Natalie sat down beside him. "Babe? Is there something you wanna talk about?" She asked him quietly.

Alex turned to her, he nodded slowly.
