22. DIDN'T SEE IT COMING

"Bones sinking like stones
All that we've fought for
Homes, places we've grown
All of us are done for"

★・・・★・・・★

An explosion from below us sounded throughout the house. Five and I held onto each other tightly as the house shook violently. Dust and chunks of the ceiling began to break off and fall to the ground, nearly hitting us.

"Are you okay?" Five asked as he scanned over me for any injuries.

I nodded my head and reassured him. "What was that?"

"I don't know.. Let's go find out," Five replied. He held my hand and walked us into the hallway cautiously.

When we stepped out of the bedroom, all of the other Hargreaves were frantically running around.

"Yo, what the hell is going on?" Diego shouted.

Klaus sprinted out of his room. "Are those explosions coming from—"

Luther finished his sentence. "Vanya." Five and I turned to him with confusion plastered on our faces.

"What are you—" My question was cut off because the house shook again.

Everyone grasped onto the wall in an attempt to avoid falling over. It was evident that the miniature earthquakes were going to cause the mansion to fall apart.

Finally, the shaking ceased. "We need to get to safety outside of the Academy!" Pogo informed all of us.

Klaus and Diego nodded hurriedly and sprinted down the hall.

"Don't forget Mom!" Luther called after them.

Five grabbed my hand. "Lexa, we have to get out of here," he urged.

I nodded an okay, and we began running down the hall.

More explosions shook the house. Dust filled the air and glass covered the ground. The walls started to crack open, and eventually huge parts of the ceiling began to fall apart. I phased Five and I through multiple falling and exploding objects as we ran up the stairs to the main floor.

Once we made it upstairs, Five and I dashed outside for safety. Both of us were gasping for air because of all the running and dodging we had to do.

I spotted Klaus and Diego running out from the alley beside the house. Alison and Luther were also exiting from the front doors Five and I had just gone through.

The Umbrella Academy was completely destroyed. Stone, wood, and glass debris were scattered around us. There were numerous small fires burning the leftover remnants of the house.

"Mom!" Diego screamed and frantically searched the remains of the mansion. "Klaus, come here. Help me search!"

Klaus wore a look of sorrow. "Diego," he sighed. "Just stop it."

Diego refused to quit looking through the dilapidated building. "Stop," Klaus repeated dismally. He tried to pull Diego off of the ground, but Diego pushed his arm away.

"Let me go! What're you doing?" Diego yelled, exasperated.

"Stop," Klaus ordered calmly. "She's- she's gone. Okay?" Klaus finally was able to get Diego to stand up.

Diego's eyes glazed over. "What do you wanna do?" Diego asked Klaus. It looked like the two of them were on the verge of crying.

"You wanna walk away from this?" Diego questioned hesitantly.

"No," Klaus breathed.

Diego shook his head in defeat. "What about Pogo?"

"He didn't make it." Luther spoke up.

Diego's eyes widened. "What?"

"Vanya killed him," was all Luther said.

I frowned at the loss of Grace and Pogo. When I first met Vanya, murder was the last thing on my mind. How could she have possibly done all of this?

Diego gaped in complete shock and disbelief. "But Vanya wouldn't—"

Luther interrupted his sentence. "No. I saw it, just before we got out," he announced solemnly.

Diego sighed and sat down on a piece of stone slowly. "Mom. Now Pogo," he mourned.

"This is it," Five spoke lowly. "The apocalypse is still on. The world ends today."

Everyone turned to him with appalled expressions. Harold Jenkins was dead, so how is the apocalypse still on?

"I thought you said it was over?" Luther questioned.

"I was wrong, okay?" Five stated. He pulled out a newspaper from inside of his jacket pocket. "This newspaper, I found it in the future the day I got stuck. The headline hasn't changed!"

I rubbed the side of my head, refusing to believe that the world would be ending at any moment now. "This can't be happening," I spoke to myself.

"No, that doesn't mean anything. Time could've been altered since that newspaper came out this morning," Diego disagreed with Five and his assumption about the apocalypse.

"You're not listening to me," Five snapped at Diego. "When I found it, I assumed this place came down along with everything else, but here we are." Five sighed and shook his head.

"How do you know that this relates to the end of the world though?" I asked Five in dubiety.

"The moon's still shining, the earth is in one piece, but not the Academy," Five answered simply.

Klaus walked forward and took the newspaper out of Five's hands. "I'm confused," he stated as he looked over the article.

"Then listen to me, you idiot!" Five fumed. "Vanya destroys the Academy before the apocalypse. I thought Harold Jenkins was the cause, but he was the fuse. Vanya is the bomb! Vanya causes the apocalypse," Five exclaimed.

"This whole time we were worried about Harold Jenkins when we should've been worried about Vanya," I announced shuddering.

Realization finally struck Luther as his eyes widened. "We have to find her," he said.

In the distance, helicopter blades were heard whirling throughout the sky. The helicopters shined their lights down on the Academy, searching through the remains.

"We gotta go, now," Diego ordered. "Regroup at the Super Star."

Everyone ran off in different directions, while Five took my hand and teleported us to the bowling alley.
