14. FINDING GERALD

"the saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies"

★・・・★・・・★

The Hargreeves family and I stood in a circle in their living room. No one had ever heard of this 'Harold Jenkins.'

"Who the hell is Harold Jenkins?" Diego asked.

"I don't know.. yet," Five stated as he threw his cup of coffee across the room. "But I do know that he's responsible for the apocalypse. We have to find him, and we have to do it now."

"But.. how is he connected to what's gonna happen?" Luther wondered.

Five shrugged. "I don't know."

"Wait, so you just know his name?" Diego stepped forward. "That's it?"

"That's enough," Five reasoned.

"There's probably dozens of Harold Jenkinses in this city," Diego added.

"Well, we better start looking, then," Five ordered.

"I'm sorry. Am I the only one that's skeptical here?" Alison asked everyone. "I mean, how exactly do you know all of this about what's his name?"

"Harold Jenkins," I filled in for her.

Out of the corner of my eyes, I noticed Five fidget with his clothes. When I looked over he stopped.

"You know those lunatics in masks who attacked the house?" Five asked.

"Oh, yeah, I think I remember those guys!" Klaus exclaimed.

"Yeah, the ones that attacked us while you were getting drunk," Diego accused.

"Yeah. Them." Five interrupted, "They were sent by the Temps Commission to stop me from coming back and preventing the end of life on Earth."

Alison crossed her arms and shook her head dramatically. "The Temps what?"

Five clarified his previous statement "My former employer. They monitor all of time and space to make sure whatever is supposed to happen happens."

Five continued his speech. "They believe the apocalypse is coming in 3 days. So I went to Commission Headquarters and intercepted a message that was meant for said lunatics."

"Protect Harold Jenkins," I thought aloud.

Five nodded. "Exactly. He must be responsible for the apocalypse."

I understood everything that Five was saying, and agreed that we needed to find this Harold Jenkins. Apparently, I was the only one who understood though, besides Five of course.

The room was quiet for only a second before everyone began spitting out questions.

Alison was the first to speak. "What do you mean, 'protect time and space?' "

"Where is this Hazel, Five?" Luther asked.

Klaus whispered lowly. "My skin is on fire."

"I mean.. Do you have any idea how insane this sounds?" Alison questioned Five again.

"You know what else is insane?" Five shouted over everyone. We all quieted.

Five went on. "I look like a 13-year-old boy, Klaus talks to the dead, Lexa is intangible, and Luther thinks he's fooling everyone with that overcoat."

Five pointed to each of us when he mentioned our abilities. Luther's face turned red as he looked away, embarrassed with the sudden attention.

Five calmed down. "Everything about us is insane. It always has been."

"He's got a point there," Klaus remarked.

"We didn't choose this life, we're just living it." Five sighed. "For the next 3 days, anyway,"

"But the last time we tried to stop it, we all died. Why is this time any different?" Alison stammered, "Why shouldn't I go home to my daughter?"

"Because this time I'm here. We have reinforcements, and the name of the man responsible." Five looked around the room. "Guys, we actually have the chance of saving the lives of billions of people. Including Claire."

Alison looked surprised. "You know her name?"

"I do, and I'd like to live long enough to meet her." Five reassured.

"Alright." Alison walked over and joined Five and I. "Let's get this bastard."

I smiled and turned to Five. "I'm in."

"You had me at Gerald Jenkins," Diego declared with a look of determination.

"Harold Jenkins," I corrected.

"Whatever," he shrugged. "I've already lost two people this week. I'm not losing anyone else."

Diego joined us on the opposite side of the room.

"Luther?" Five questioned.

Luther shook his head. "You go. I'm gonna stay behind and look through Dad's files. I still think this has something to do with why he sent me to the moon."

I sighed. The moon theory again. We just received insight on the person who causes the apocalypse, and now everyone chooses to split up. Perfect timing Hargreeves, so much for the full force of the Umbrella Academy.

Diego must've shared the same ideas as me because he seemed annoyed with Luther. "Seriously? Now you wanna make the end of the world about you and Dad?"

"No. 'Watch for threats.' That's what he told me," Luther objected, still protecting his moon research. "You think that's a coincidence?"

"Yes," I mumbled quietly. No one heard me.

"This all has to be connected somehow," Luther advised.

"No, we should all stick together," Alison chimed in.

Five crossed his arms. "We don't have time for this!"

"Let's roll. I know where we can find this asshole. Klaus, you're with me," Diego announced.

Klaus sat up from the bench he was currently laying on. "Yeah. I'm good. I think I'll pass. Im feeling a little under the weather," he trailed off and shuffled out of the room.

Diego shook his head and left. Five limped out too and I followed behind him.

Five, Diego, Alison, and I sat in an old, green car outside of a police station. Our mission was to locate Harold Jenkins.

"I know this Jenkins dude has to have a record," Diego said as he unbuckled his seatbelt, about to go into the station. "We gotta get our hands on this file."

"And your plan is to what? Waltz in there and just ask for it?" Alison questioned from the backseat.

Diego stared into the reflection of the side view mirror. I caught a glimpse of the reflection too, and saw a few policemen conversing outside of the station.

"I know the station like the back of my hand, sis," Diego responded nonchalantly. "I've spent a lot of time inside."

Alison scoffed. "Handcuffed."

"Whatever," Diego brushed her off. "Here's the plan."

"Plan?" Five questioned the word as if he's never heard of it. "I'm just gonna blink in and get the file."

"No that's not- You don't know the ins and outs of this place, okay?" Diego replied.

Five rolled his eyes. "I literally just did this yesterday."

"How?" I asked. Five wasn't even here yesterday.

"My yesterday, not your yesterday," he answered, as if that made any sense. "It'll take me two seconds. Why don't I just go?"

Diego shook his head in defiance. "Listen to me. You are not going in there. I made a call. Cause that's what a leader does. He leads."

I started to laugh at how dramatic he was being, but Diego snapped his head towards me and I shut up.

"Sorry." I bit my lips in an attempt to conceal my laughter. A grin formed on my face.

Diego grunted and got out of the car. We watched him walk sneakily into an alleyway between the police station and another building.

"Hey, I need to make a call real quick." Alison also got out of the car too. She walked over to a payphone on the side of the street and began dialing a number.

The car was quiet for a few moments before I decided to speak up. "I'm glad you're back," I smiled shyly.

Five turned around in his seat to face me. "I'm sorry I left without saying anything."

I shook my head. "No, it's okay. I'm just glad you're okay."

He smiled. "I'm glad you're okay too."

Every time he smiled my heart did a cartwheel!

"You should do that more often," I said happily, thinking of his rare smile.

"Do what?" Five asked.

"Smile." I felt blush creep onto my cheeks. "I like it when you do that."

Five did as I said and stared into my eyes. He started to lean in closer to me, and, for a moment, I thought he was going kiss me. Butterflies quickly swarmed my stomach and fluttered their wings within me.

Five and I quickly pulled away though. Our time was interrupted when Alison and Diego entered the car.

We sat back in our seats and acted as if nothing happened while they were gone.

"So?" Five asked Diego.

Diego smirked and held up a manila folder. "You're welcome."

Alison snatched the folder out of Diego's hand and opened it swiftly.

"Holy shit!" She blurted.

"What?" Diego asked, leaning over to see what was printed on the paper.

Alison held up a picture of a man. I instantly recognized him. This was the same man who was at the Academy with Vanya when we were talking about the apocalypse.

"Harold Jenkins is Lenard Peabody," Alison shuddered.
