02. REMEMBERING THE PAST

"there will always be a reason why you meet people. either you need to change your life, or you're the one that'll change theirs"

★・・・★・・・★

The stars twinkled and the moon shone bright within the night sky. Wind sporadically blew and sent a chilly breeze throughout the air. I crossed my arms as the boy and I walked down an empty street. An awkward silence had taken over ever since we left Griddy's.

I've always hated when it was quiet. Mostly because it reminded me of 'home.' Shaking away flashbacks of my past, I decided to speak up.

"So are you going to explain to me what just happened back there or what?"

The boy chuckled lowly. "I could ask you the same question."

I rolled my eyes. "Can you at least tell me your name?"

"Five."

I looked over at him as we continued walking. "Five? As in.. the number?"

"Yes. Five as in the number," he replied simply.

This boy was strange and very mysterious. I felt like I needed to figure him out; I wanted to figure him out. There are so many questions that popped into my head. Who were the men back at Griddy's? Why were they hunting him? Why is his name Five? How did he do that teleport trick?

I thought about the possibility of him coming from the same place I had came from. No, he couldn't be. I don't remember him being apart of the team. Plus, it was almost impossible to escape the Order. I nearly got out with my life.

"How did you do that trick back there?" Five interrupted my thoughts.

"Hmm? What trick?" I took a minute to think about what he said, and then realized that he was talking about my 'ability.'

I looked down at the ground before answering, "It's kind of a long story."

Five grinned a little before making eye contact with me. "I've got time."

I looked into his emerald eyes, wow they were mesmerizing. I felt like I could trust Five, but I wasn't sure where to start.

I hesitated before speaking, "1989." The mention of the year seemed to interest Five. "Forty-three children were born with unbelievable abilities that no one had ever seen before. There was a group of scientists who wanted to make more children 'special,' so they created an organization known as the Horror Order. These scientists adopted a surplus of orphans, and ran a variety of tests on them to try and inject them with powers."

I paused before continuing. "I was one of their test subjects. They taught us how to control our new 'talents,' so that they could use us to do their dirty work. Murder, steal, you name it.. we were trained to commit all sorts of crime. A few of the other subjects and I tried to escape, but I was the only one to make it out alive."

I started to regret telling him about my past. I've never been open to anyone before about my powers or where so come from. Maybe I should've just left back when the fight had started at Griddy's.

Five spoke lightly, "The men at Griddy's. You thought they were from the Horror Order." He looked at me again for confirmation. "Is that why you thought they were there for you?"

"Yes.. the Order has been trying to find me ever since I left."

It was quiet for a moment before Five did something that seemed totally out of character. He apologized out of pity, and opened up to me about some secrets of his own. Five told me that he was one of those forty-three children, but he had been adopted by a man named Reginald Hargreeves. 'The old man,' as he referred to him as, adopted six other children. They were all unique, except for one. Five told me about the Umbrella Academy, and the impending apocalypse too.

"So that's it? The world is ending in eight days." Five nodded as I thought about the end of the world.

In all honesty, I didn't really care that the end was near. I was mainly angry. Angry with the scientists who took away any chance of a normal life. Angry that there was so much that I missed out on because of the Order. And angry because all my friends were back at that laboratory and would probably never escape. I frowned as I thought about my friends, who would never even get the chance to actually experience a somewhat regular life.

Lost in my own thoughts, I hadn't realized that Five and I were standing inside of an old apartment building.

"Lexa?" Five's voice snapped me out of my daze. Did he just call me Lexa?

He motioned towards the locked door in front of us, "Do you mind?"

Nodding, I phased through the door and unlocked it from inside. Five entered the small apartment room, and walked over to a chair in the corner. He sat down and crossed his legs, while I sat on one of the arms of the chair.

"Where are we?" I questioned.

Five responded, "My sister's apartment."

★・・・★・・・★

We waited awhile before the doorknob began to turn, and the front door creaked open. I saw a gloomy woman enter, and I assumed it was Five's sister. She flicked the switch and the lights turned on.

"Jesus!" The woman jumped when she turned and saw Five and I casually awaiting her arrival.

"You should have better locks on your door." Five stated.

The woman shuffled over to the couch and sat down. She gave me a questioning look, "Who's your friend?"

"I'm Alexa." I answered.

She nodded slowly and introduced herself, "Vanya."

Vanya looked back at Five and paused. Her eyes traveled down his arm. "Is that blood?"

I looked down too and saw the crimson colored stain on his sleeve.

Five brushed off her question. "It's nothing."

Vanya shifted uncomfortably and sighed. "Why're you here?" She glanced at me quickly before looking back at Five.

"I've decided you're the only one I can trust. Besides Lexa, of course." I smiled slightly when I heard the nickname again.

"Why me?" Vanya asked.

Five replied simply, "Because you're ordinary." Vanya's mood seemed to change immediately when Five mentioned the word ordinary. She must be the one without powers in the family.

Five continued, "Because you'll listen."

"Okay." Vanya got up from the couch and left the room. Within a few minutes she returned with some medical supplies.

Five lifted up his sleeve, revealing a deep cut. When did that happen?!

As Vanya tended to the wound, Five began to explain what happened when he time traveled into the future.

"When I jumped forward and got stuck in the future, do you know what I found?"

"No."

"Nothing. Absolutely nothing."

Everything became darker and the air seemed to thicken as Five continued his story about the apocalypse.

"As far as I could tell, I was the last person left alive. I never figured out what killed the human race... but I did find something else." Five paused. "The date it happens."

Even for the second time hearing this story, I still felt nothing. It was like I was numb whenever the end of the world was mentioned. There are just too many emotions and thoughts running through my mind, and I can't pinpoint just one. I did know one thing though. I wanted to help Five prevent the apocalypse.. no matter what. Once everything is all over, I'll go back and rescue all of my friends and the other kids at the Order.

I watched Five as he spoke. "The world ends in eight days.. and I have no idea how to stop it."

Vanya tensed and looked down. "I'll put on a pot of coffee."
