Chapter 27- Witching
Repost for those who didn't see it when I posted it late last night.
--Alarik--
When I walked into my father's office the witch was already there.
The two were laughing about one thing or another and when I opened the door my father turned my way.
"Alarik, come on in."
He seemed happier than I'd seen him in a while. It was an odd sight to see him laughing like that. Especially with a witch. It wasn't that werewolves and witches didn't get along or anything, we just didn't really associate much with them. In fact, I don't think I know a single witch myself.
"This is Zachary Brin."
I shook the man's proffered hand, shaking it firmly.
"It's nice to finally meet you, Alarik. Your father has told me much about you."
"Did he now?" My voice came out sounding less sure than I'd intended. I wasn't entirely comfortable with what my father may have to say about me. I was also slightly wary of anyone that my father may be good friends with.
My father had a darker side to him, one he'd passed down to me. One that I'd vowed to step away from because of Allison. I was worried that his friends may harbor a similar trait. I was also generally skeptical about witches.
Werewolves were one thing. It was in our genetic make up. Witches were something completely different altogether though. They were able to do magic. Granted, magic was helpful in some situations, such as bringing two packs together. But I was leery of magic use.
"All good things," he said with a toothy grin.
I tried to return the gesture, but I'm not sure if I succeeded.
"My father believes you can bring the two packs together. Can you?" I asked getting straight to business.
"Not by myself," the witch's smile fades. "But I know people who can help me."
"And what exactly would it entail?"
"There's a spell of sorts. One that my fellow magic users would assist me in. We can do just about anything you would need. What were you thinking?"
I glanced at my father. He was watching me intently. It was slightly unsettling.
"I was hoping to get a common place for both packs to merge. A place that's equel distance between the two. There's already a house set up that I would like to be the center."
"I would need to look around the other pack. Get a feel for the layout and determine how best to combine them. Do you have an idea of how you would like it to look when everything's complete?"
"Yes."
"Great. If you could give me a print of what you envision and if I can look around the other pack then I think we can get a solid foundation for this. When are you looking to have this done by."
"When I hand the pack over to my son," my father says finally speaking up. "We were thinking of doing it on the same day. So in two weeks time."
I looked at my father quizzically. Last I knew it was going to be a month. Apparently he had decided to move up the time without telling me. Not that I was going to complain, it just meant getting everything over with sooner.
"Two weeks. I should have something arranged then. Alarik, when do you think I can have a look around the other pack?"
"Today. After we're finished here I'm going to see if my mate would like to come with us. I want to show her the other pack and introduce her there. I've been away for a while. I need to sort out everything with my Beta and actually step in. I've not had the time to be there except to give them my announcement."
Zachary nodded.
"You came in your own vehicle correct? So you can follow us there?"
"I most certainly can."
"Alright. Then unless there's anything else for the three of us to discuss I believe we're done here?"
"I would believe you are correct."
Zachary turned back to my father and they clasped hands.
"It was good to see you again Zachary."
"You as well."
With that, we were on our way. I dialed Jason's number as I walked out the front door telling him to be ready to go in a couple minutes.
Allison, I'm going with the witch and Jason to the other pack. You can come with if you'd like. I'm not sure how long we'll be, it could be a couple days.
I wasn't sure if I'd gotten through to her. I wasn't sure what version of Allison I would be getting, the one who was guarded, keeping her walls up even toward me, or the Allison that finally told me her deepest, darkest secrets from her time as a prisoner.
I'll go with.I breathed a sigh of relief when I got her answer.
Alright. Stay put, I'll be there to pick you up in a moment. I got behind the wheel of the car and pulled out. Zachary was already on my tail following close behind.
I pulled up outside Cassandra's house and Allison sprinted out the door and down the walk way to the car. There was a smile on her face and I couldn't help but mirror it. I was beyond joyed to see her smiling like that.
"What?" She asked getting into the car and fastening her seat belt.
"Nothing. I just love seeing your smile."
She blushed slightly and looked down. I reached out grabbing her hand in mine and then made my way toward Jason's house.
He was waiting outside when I pulled up and he hopped in the back quickly. I could feel the air shift in the car. The tension that was building.
I knew it was between Allison and Jason, and I was reminded of the conversation he and I had when Allison was gone. He'd said he loved her. I couldn't blame him at all, Allison had that effect on people, but she was my mate. She cared for him and I couldn't blame her for that. She had spent more time with him over the years, getting to know him, being his friend, than she had me. I'd turned away from here when we were younger and she'd placed her friendship with someone else.
I knew they'd been more than just friends over the years, and while I wasn't happy about it, there was nothing I could do about the past. I could however do something about the present and future.
My eyes locked with Jason's in the rear view mirror and I squeezed Allison's hand slightly. I trusted both of them. I trusted Jason with Allison's life because I knew that he would protect her just as I would. He wouldn't let anything happen to her just as I wouldn't.
I was working to curb my jealousy. It was ingrained in me, it was trying to flare up to let him know that she was mine. He knew that though. And I trusted him. At least I thought I did.
I mentally shook my head and focused back on the road. We pull into the pack and I head straight for the central square. I park the car and get out, walking around and opening Allison's door for her. She gives me a smile and I wrap my arm around her waist. I take her with me, Jason following along, as we go up to Zachary who is just getting out of his car.
"Zachary, this is my mate, Allison. Allison, this is Zachary."
"The witch," Allison says.
"Warlock actually, but yes." He offers Allison a warm smile and reaches out his hand. She takes it and they shake.
"And this is my Beta, Jason."
The two shake hands as well.
"Shall we take a look around?" I ask.
Zachary nods and I turn, Allison still at my side. I drop my arm to my side, taking her hand instead.
"I like the set up for this square. It's a nice wide space for gatherings and there's already a small area set up for children to play. It's welcoming and safe. However I like the way the houses are set up back in my father's pack. It seems more orderly."
"I agree completely," Zachary says as he glances around.
A few faces have come out to see what's going on. They recognize me from my announcement the other day, but I can't quite read the expressions on their faces.
I led Zachary up onto the stage and over to where the mechanical box was nestled into a pillar.
"I like the set up they have here. But I was wondering if you could maybe set up some other time intervals. I am looking for maybe five, ten, fifteen, twenty minutes. I would also be interested in an alarm system that isn't continuous for the entire time. One that is constant for maybe two or three minutes and then has a countdown as you get closer. The continuous siren is a bit much."
Zachary steps up and leans over looking at the box. I can see Allison assessing it as well. It's something new to her as well.
Zachary starts mumbling words that don't sound like anything I recognize and I can see a small light as he concentrates on the box in front of him. The image becomes blurry and when everything comes back into focus the box has been revamped. There are more switches and labels. He steps back letting me look at his witchy work.
There are different dials and switches to change the time and there are even switches for a constant siren or a shortened one. I nod impressed with his work.
"Let's see how it does," I say quietly. I turn a dial to five minutes, short siren, pack meeting. When I push the button the familiar high pitched siren rings out through the area calling a meeting in the square.
Allison covers her ears reflexively and I grin looking at Zachary. He did it.
After two minutes, the siren cuts out. The only sound is the voice ringing through the pack giving the minutes remaining.
My trust in this witch -warlock- is growing.
"What are you doing?" Allison whispers next to me.
"I'm introducing the pack to their Luna and letting them know the steps that will be taking place in the near future."
Allison looks at me slightly worried. I can feel her anxiety through the bond. She's never been a real public person and now she has one of the most public positions. I have complete faith in her that she can do this. She will make an amazing Luna. I'm just relieved that she's going into this with the weight of what happened lifted off her shoulders. At least more than it had been yesterday.
