Chapter 16- The Battle
I took a few more steps forward before the fight came in sight. The first thing I saw was one of my men lying still on the ground. Chances were, he was dead. I took a deep breath and looked at the rest.
We were definitely outnumbered. There were seven of us and twelve of them. That was after our men had killed three of theirs already.
I stepped into the middle of the fight, my claws out and ready. I could hear the gun fire, smell the blood, hear the racing hearts as people battled for their lives. I couldn't help but think how ridiculous this all was. If they'd just kept to themselves, if they wouldn't have tried taking someone from my pack, this all could have been avoided.
I felt someone bump into my shoulder as he'd been pushed back by one of my other men. I wrapped an arm around the man's upper body, trapping his arms. I then reached around with the others and dragged my hand across his throat. His skin gave way under the claws, the blood dripping and I heard a gurgled gasp before he fell limply to the ground.
I turned to face the rest of them and I saw a small girl near the back.
"Mr. Freemont, we need to get you out of here. We need you and your findings safe."
"Yes, yes, Cinthia." The man turned eagerly to go after her.
His findings? He was in charge of this place. He was the reason Allison had been here.
He wasn't going anywhere. Not if I had anything to say about it.
I ran toward him, catching him just before he slipped through the doorway. I grabbed the back of his white lab coat in one hand and pulled him back, slamming him face against the wall.
I heard a groan from the man.
"What do you do here?" I asked him.
He didn't say anything, just stood there breathing heavily.
I pulled him back and slammed him back into the wall. "I asked what you do here."
"I'm a doctor!" He shouted.
"That's not what you do. What did you do to Allison?"
"Who are you talking about?"
"That werewolf," I snarled. "What did you do to her?"
"I didn't do anything!"
"Don't try to lie to me. I'm an Alpha, I can tell when you're lying." My voice was low, barely a whisper in his ear. I could feel the spike of fear that ran through him.
"I-I ran tests. We wanted to know how- how it works."
"How what works?"
"The-- abilities." I could hear the man's heart pounding quickly. He wasn't used to being this close to a werewolf. At least not one who was in control.
"And why didn't you just ask?" I asked with a growl.
"We-we needed to have the evidence," he whispered.
I wasn't sure what this man had done. All I knew was that he was responsible for keeping Allison here, he had been the one with her, and I still remembered the pain I'd felt from her that first time we had been able to connect.
I just didn't like the feel that I got from anyone in this place, and at the moment he was the one most responisble. He was now done.
"Well I could help you with that. You see, it's a full moon tonight and all it would take is just one little scratch." The last word came out as a whisper as I slipped my claw against his skin.
The man struggled under my grip clearly not excited about that idea.
I sighed and punctured the artery in his neck. The blood started flowing down his neck. He'd bleed out in a few minutes. I looked around, everyone was too busy to notice him, he'd surely die of blood loss before anyone had the chance to do anything about it.
One of his hands goes up to his neck, completely soaking in blood instantly. His eyes were wide and I could see that he was going to try to help himself.
I stopped him immediately, swiping my foot to knock him off balance. I grabbed one leg and snapped it with little force. The man cried out and fell to the ground. He tried crawling and I sighed, bending over and breaking an arm as well.
I left the man broken and bleeding and turned around. The first person I saw was a woman standing, staring at me in horror.
I grabbed the front of her shirt and narrowed my eyes at her. I closed my eyes tightly for a minute as another wave of dizziness came over me. I knew I'd have to get out of here soon and get some help, but the anger helped me push through.
"P-please don't kill me," the woman said with a shaky voice.
My hand tightened around the fabric in my hand. How dare these people beg for their lives when they had no regard for any supernatural lives.
I was about to kill her when I heard Allison.
"Alarik, don't do it!"
My head whipped around. I'd told her to stay away from all this.
"Allison, go back. Now."
"No. I won't turn away. Don't kill her, she's the one that helped me. She's the one that made it possible for me to contact you. If it weren't for her I- I don't know-"
By now the fight had ended for the most part. Many of the people from here had been killed, others injured and detained. Those who were still still alive on their side looking at the woman in disbelief.
"Well, well, well," a familiar voice said from behind.
I turn to see Alpha O'Brian walking through the room, stepping over the dead on the ground.
"Did you know that your wife was a traitor, Jaeger?"
"Maria?" A man asked. I looked down at him, a cut over his right eye, a small line of blood dripping down.
The woman didn't look down at him, at her husband.
A slow, low laugh came from deep in O'Brian's chest as he stepped around, standing in front of me.
I let go of the woman and she stumbled to the side. I turned to Allison.
"You need to go with my men, go to the car."
"I'm not-"
"Allison, just go. I'll be right behind you."
"But-"
"Go now," I said firmly.
I could see it in her eyes. She didn't want to go. She saw how bad I looked and she was worried that if I didn't go out with her then she wouldn't see me again. However, surprisingly, she listened.
"Jason," I whispered, grabbing his arm. "If I'm not out of here in fifteen minutes I want you to leave. You get her far away from here, take her back to the pack and make sure she's safe."
"Yes, sir," he said firmly, but I could see the worry in his eyes.
I dropped his arm and he took Allison out, leading her back toward the door we'd used to come in. I turned back to Alpha O'Brian. He was the reason this had happened. He'd used these people as tools. Granted I didn't beleive that any of them were innocent, they hadn't seemed to have much of an issue with what they were doing.
"What is it with you and your daughter? You just never give up."
"Son, you've made a huge mistake."
"The only mistake I made was not speaking up right away. Even if I didn't have a mate, there is no way I would marry your daughter. You are a poor excuse for an Alpha, you're just a coward that hides behind his title. You have no interest in what's best for your people. You don't value anything of importance, you just want power. You don't even care that you wouldn't see an ounce of it yourself."
"You know nothing of me!" He walked forward and grabbed the woman who had helped Allison. He didn't even hesitate, he snapped her neck and dropped her to the ground. "Can't have any traitors. If it hadn't been for her, well, this would be going much differently about now. Allison had outlived her usefulness."
A growl ripped through the room, a growl that had come from me.
"Don't you dare say something like that about my mate. You're going to pay for what you've done, everything you've done. I've been searching for her for over a month, we've had to hide ourselves away because of you and my father. I'm sick and tired of seeing your face around, not to mention your daughter."
I staggared slightly and reached my hand out to touch the wall in support. I quickly dropped my hand, trying not to show weakness.
Truth was I was having issues with the basic functions. Seeing had become nearly impossible, the way everything became blurry, the way it moved. Breathing was taking more effort than it usually did. Walking, well I think at the moment walking was out of the question.
Even with all that, I knew I couldn't just let this monster go. I had to do something to stop him. However, the power he gained from me is what he was after. The only reason he'd gone after Allison was to get to me. No matter what happened in here, even if I died, I knew she'd still be safe. That knowledge was enough to make me stand strong.
It was either going to be him or me. I hoped to the gods that I'd be the one walking out, but even if I weren't she'd be safe. She would be able to go back to the pack, she'd have Jason to watch after her. O'Brian would leave her alone because there would be no point in going after her any longer.
I stared the man down, my fists clenched at my sides.
"This is between you and me now. No hunters, no men to do your dirty work. Just you and me."
O'Brian's head tipped back and a loud belt of laughter echoed through the room. "You're in no shape to fight me, son. Do you have any idea who I am?"
"I already told you who you are. You're a coward, one that can't do anything for yourself," I spat at him.
"So be it." A slow grin spread across his face. "Me and you."
