TRICK OR TREAT, FREAK

SAM SHOT HER eyes open, instantly feeling the spit in her throat and the fight for it to get out. She coughed loudly, instantly regretting it as she felt her throat become dry and Scratchy. Sam glanced to her right and saw el, they both stood, instantly recognizing where they were. El and Sam turned around, staring at the last time they saw their crushes.

Sam turned to her left, instantly forgetting el as she did. She walked out, el following as Sam leaned against the wall. She groaned, feeling sick to her stomach as she felt slime stick to her jacket. "Lucas?" Sam called out, her voice echoing. She knew it was no use to calling him, but she could only hope. She eventually got up off the wall and started down the hallway, hearing el's footsteps behind her.

"Lucas?" Sam felt her heart beat rapidly against her chest, tears surfacing as she felt her fear return. "Lucas? Lucas!" She called out, her footsteps becoming faster. "Lucas!" She screamed, stopping after that. It was no hope, he couldn't reach them. He couldn't save her. It was no use.

Sam heard el screaming mikes name as she turned the corner, back when they were in the real world there was a way out. But this was the upside down, there was no way out. At least to Sam. Sam put her hand in El's back, comforting her gently since she felt herself grow sad.

Soldiers were heard shouting from far away, it made el and Sam look back, glancing at each other than back at the voices. Down the hall, there was a hole. A slightly red hole that led to the outside world. Sam turned and walked slowly towards the hole, el doing the Sam.

When they reached the hole, Sam and el peeped in it. Seeing two flashlight lights shining through. Then suddenly a man peeled into the hole, causing the two girls to press their backs against the wall quickly. El breathing heavily didn't make it any better, Sam silencing her with her index finger on her mouth.

The flashlights and voices slowly faded as Sam removed her index finger off her lips. El dipped her head in front of the hole, then sticking her hand through it. El turned to Sam with a glint of hope in her eyes. She then retrieved her hand back, staring at it in disgust much like Sam who had stepped away from the hole.

El held out her hand, after wiping the slime on her hand on Sam who sent her a slight glare, the hole becoming bigger. El made the hole life size, easier for her and Sam to fit through. El went first, landing on the ground as she panted hardly. Sam stared in disgust as she went through next, even though she hadn't went through the slime layer, she still got slime stuck on her.

Sam groaned in disgust as she felt her hands had the slime on them. Sam held out her hand to el, her taking gladly as she stood with Sam. They looked around, going in one direction and starting their way to mikes house.

Sam departed from el to go find Lucas's house that wasn't that hard to find since police cars racked their driveway, along with Dustin's. Sam stocked up the hill, slowly seeing a opening in the window. She saw Lucas, stirring in at the table, facing her but not being able to see her. Two men surrounded him as he answered whatever they asked, except giving them a death glare when they specifically asked one question.

It took him only a few second before he looked up at the window, Sam feeling the tears finally fall as she watched his tearful eyes stare into her sad eyes. Soon the two other men glanced her way but sam was gone, running down the hill and away from the house to go back to eleven.

El was running herself, away from mikes house, grabbing Sams hand as they raced off into the woods, hiding under a tree as the men searched for them, helicopters and everything. Sam felt the tears fall down her face effortlessly, hearing all the chaos she was in between.

The smell of French toast hit Sams nostrils through the sheet with two eye holes in them. Her and el standing behind him, watching him flip the toast. Hopper glances behind him only to jump out of fright, "Oh, Jesus!" He exclaimed, turning back around.

"Ghost." El said evidently, staring at hoppers side now that he was fiddling with the plates. "Yeah, I can see that." Hopper mumbled. "Halloween." Sam stared, staring at Hopper putting the food on the three plates. "Sure is." Hopper replied. Sam didn't like his monotone answers. "But right now, it's breakfast, okay? Come on, let's eat." Hopper passes them putting the plates of toast down with the silverware.

"They wouldn't see us." El continued, discarding hoppers words. "Who wouldn't see you?" Hopper asked, getting the orange juice out of the fridge and taking it to the table. "The bad men." El answered, Sam nodding. "What are you two talking about?" Hopper sighed as he put the arrange juice back after pouring some in three glasses.

"Trick or treat!" Sam exclaimed. Hopper was seating now, in his seat as the girls stood next to him. "You two wanna go trick or treating?" Hopper asked, finally turning to them. The girls nodded, "You both know the rules." He said, standing up. "Yes, But-" el tried as he put one hand on one of their shoulders. "Yeah, So you two know the answer." Hopper told them. "No, but they wouldn't see us." Sam tried to reason.

"No. Hey. I don't care." Hopper deadpanned. "But they-" el tried again but he interrupted her. "You two go out there, ghost or not, it's a risk. We don't take risks, all right? They're stupid, and..?" Hopper asked expectantly. "We're not stupid." The girls said through gritted teeth. "Exactly." Hopper backed away slightly. "Now you two take that off, sit down and eat. Foods getting cold." Hopper demanded.

Sam and el snatched off the sheets and sat down, hopper sat and equally poured syrup on their toast. Sam pouted, making no move to eat and el felt the same way. Hopper sighed, "All right, look..how about I get off early tonight, and I buy us a bunch of candy, and we can sit around and get fat, and we watch a scary movie together?" Hopper compromised. Sam and el directed their attention towards him, Sam narrowing her eyes at him.

"How's that for a compromise?" Hopper asked, confusing both girls by his choice of words. "Compromise?" El stuttered out. "C-O-M-promise. Compromise." Hopper spelled out. Sam took in the new word and turned her gaze to her glass of orange juice. "How about that's you guys  word for the day? Yeah?" Hopper asked, but they knew that really wasn't a choice. Sam leaned on her right hand, sighing.

"It's something that's kinda in-between. It's like halfway happy." Hopper explained the word. "By 5-1-5?" Sam asked, forgetting his earlier corrections. "5:15. Yeah, sure." Hopper agreed. "Promise?" El asked. "Yes. I promise." Hopper promised. Sam glanced at el with doubt but had somewhat hope. "Halfway happy." Sam sighed, shrugging as she took her fork.

Hopper let out a small smile as he ruffled Sam and el's hair, causing Sam to playfully push his hand away. He and el chuckled as Sam filled her mouth with the toast.

Sam played with the floating knife, throwing in walls and eggo boxes. El watched the tv as Sam did so. "Well, I'm stunned. I don't know what to think." A women voiced in excitement from the television, causing Sam to turn her attention to the television from the table.

"Don't you love me?" The man asked, his voice filled with muscularity. "Of course I love you." She nodded her head. "It's just that it's so sudden. I mean, it's not like you." The women turned away from him. "Erica, I am this way because of you." The man hugged her from behind. "Me?" She asked, a small smirk creeping on her face. "Me?" El mocked, innocently as she pointed between her collar bones.

Sam turned her gaze from the television to el in seconds as she stared at the girl, oddly. The man made sounds of agreement, "You made me wild and impetuous, just like you." He smiled. Sam stared at the television curiously, "Impetuous." Sam repeated, the word seeming to roll off her tongue. "People are going to be aghast." The women said. "People are going to be aghast." El repeated.

Chittering was heard from behind Sam, she blinked at the television before glancing behind her. We got up as well, walking on the other side of the table. Sam stood, watching as el pulled the rope, making the curtains open wide. They stared at a squirrel, watching as it ate, a memory coming back to the two.

It was cold, colder than the two girls had ever experienced before. The snow on the grow barely made the squirrel shiver, making Sam stare at it in confusion. Suddenly the innocent squirrel went flying into the tree, paralyzing it in a leap stance as it fell down to the ground with a slightly twitch. Sam looked at el for a second before approaching the squirrel.

El picked it up, sighing as she saw blood slightly splurged around it.

El held the squirrel over the fire, watching as the heat was burning the hairs of it. Sam sat beside her, leaning closer to the warmth. Suddenly a twig snapped, causing both girls to tense. The girls turn to the man who held a gun in his hands. "Hey, I'm not going to hurt either of you." He spoke, no fear but wary laced in his voice. "What's your names?" He asked, stepping close. Sam felt her head tilt downwards, feeling the slight feeling of fear.

"What're you two doing out here in the cold?" The man asked, stepping closer. The dead, burned, squirrel lifted up from behind the girls, fire slightly on it. The man stared at it in pure shock, then the squirrel went flying towards he man, hitting him right in the face. The man fell, unconscious as Sam and el took that as a sign.

"They stood and ran to the man, el took his coat, Sam taking his hat since her jacket was way warmer than el's flannel. Sam and el took off, not looking back at the sleeping man, who's face was now in the ground, sunken into the snow.

Sams gaze on the squirrel hardened. She glanced at el before pulling the curtain back down.

The sun had went down, the girls settling on the couch as they watched the tv. "Who are you? I'm Maria." The little girl, known as Maria introduced. "Will you play with me?" She asked, Sam sighing as el held onto a teddy bear. "Would you like one of my flowers?" She asked him.

Beeping came from behind the tv, causing Sam and el to stand. They approached the the box as it beeped.

"L."

"A."

"T."

"E."

"Late." Sam concluded, a scowl on her face. Another memory from the two girls resurfacing.

[][][]

Because of the earlier confrontation, the girls never ate, causing the hunger to grow stronger as they walked in the dark forest. Until they came across a box, with snow on top. Sam and el walked towards it, el brushing some snow off of it before opening.

It was waffles and pancakes inside, Sam held her mouth open, slightly shocked before grabbing the small pancakes while el grabbed the waffles. They stood and took off without closing the box.

[][][]

Sam felt her scowl grow slowly to become a grimace as she walked away, leaving el behind. She walked into the shared room before the door slammed shut, el flinching.

[][][]

The special knock was heard through the girls bedroom. Sam stopped what she was doing, not moving to open it. Neither did el. They heard it again, as Hopper became slightly impatient. He did it a third time. "Hey, kids. Open up, all right? Look, I know I'm late. I got candy here, all right? I got all the good stuff." Hopper said through the door.

"Please, will one of you open the door? I'm gonna freeze to death out here." Hopper slammed his hand on the door frame as he spoke. The locks undid, Sam glancing at bloody nose that was wiped away. Hopper entered, following the cord that lead to the girls room.

"Hey, girls. Open up, would you?" Hopper asked, his voice becoming more louder since he was closer. "I got, uh stuck somewhere, and I lost track of time. And I'm sorry." Hopper explained. Sam didn't budge, neither did el. "El, Sam, would you open the door?" Hopper asked, sam looked down. She was still upset, he lied. "El? Sam?" Hopper continued.

He eventually gave up, causing Sam to sigh as she picked up the blindfold before stopping at hoppers voice. "Alright. I'm just gonna be out here by myself, eating all this candy. I'm gonna get fat. It's very unhealthy to leave me out here. Could have a heart attack or something." Hopper ranted, Sam couldn't help but break out a small frown.

"But, you know, you two do what you want." Hopper finished his rant. El flicked to the static channel, sam sighed sadly before putting on her blindfold. Sam felt el grip her hand, pulling her into the dark abyss.

Sam drifted away from el, walking towards the sound of pencil writing on a table. Sam walked toward the sound, seeing a back turned away from her. She walked around the back to see Lucas writing, she stared at him as she started walking towards him. She let out a small smile as he pressed his lips into a thin line, humming a song. Sam looked over his shoulder to see he was writing a letter to her, Dear Sam, the top of it read.

Sam could barely read, so she only mustered up a few words. She briefly read threw it as she read words like, Halloween, Will, a girl named max and missing her terribly. Sam sighed, her lips curled as the tears bottled in her eyes. She missed him.

Sam watched him slowly turn behind him, meeting her gaze. Sam smiled hopefully as she went to touch his shoulder, "Lucas." She said, with sadness. He didn't reply as she expected. He sighed and got up, taking the now folded paper with him. He walked away, leaving Sam to stare at the pencil and table to fade away.

Sam removed the blindfold, tears falling as she threw it at the door. Sam turned to el and embraced her in a hug, el gladly returning the hug.
