Time Stands Still

A/N: Some "Stray Cat Crossing" references are in here. Also, just to clear up some confusion, Emil and Iceland are basically two different people in this story. Iceland is from the past/the child version and Emil is the present version.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Emil woke up and looked around. He felt like he knew the area he was in but he wasn't so sure. He couldn't even remember who he really was and how he got there. All he knew was that his name was Emil Steilsson. He then crossed the street that was right infront of him and found a little, silver-haired boy.
"Are you lost?" He asked the little boy.
"...No." The little boy replied back.
Emil then looked up at the sky and saw that it was dark. The moon and stars were visible in the night sky.
"It's already late... Do you want me to walk you to your house?"
"...Sure." The little boy said, then pointed down the street. "My house is that way."
Before they could move, Emil asked him a question. "What's your name?"
"...My name is...Iceland..." The little boy replied back quietly.
Emil thought it was weird that the little boy was named after a country but just shrugged it off. He then started walking in the direction of the house. He was already a few meters away when he noticed that Iceland wasn't moving.
"What's wrong?" He said after turning back towards Iceland.
Iceland blew a strand of hair off of his face but it fell back down again. "Can't see..."
Emil suddenly put his hand in his pocket and felt something inside. He pulled the item out and found a cross clip in his hand. He couldn't remember who it belonged to but it felt special to him. He then decided to let Iceland use it until they got to his house.
"Use this for now." He said, clipping the cross clip onto Iceland's hair.
"Takk... (Thank you)" Iceland said. Emil looked at him, confused. That word sounded familiar but he couldn't remember what it meant or what language it was in. Instead of wondering what it meant, he took Iceland's hand and started walking to the house.
When they finally got to Iceland's house, Emil let go of his hand. Iceland had been looking down at the ground the whole time so Emil never got to see how he actually looked like. He then looked at Iceland's house. It seemed familiar but he couldn't remember it.
"Takk..." Iceland said again before walking into the house.
"Wait! The clip!" Emil called after Iceland but he was already gone. He sighed and walked towards the door of the house which was wide open.
"I have to get that clip..." He said before walking in.
~~~~~~

The house was dark inside. Emil could barely see anything. He slowly walked forward, keeping a hand on the wall to make sure that he doesn't get lost in the dark.

"Picture?" Someone beside him suddenly asked. He jumped up in surprise then looked at the person. It was a small boy wearing red Chinese clothing, with black hair and a camera.

"Sure..." He said to the boy.

"Thank you!" The boy held up the camera. "Hold still...and smile..."

Emil sighed then forced a small smile onto his face as the boy took a picture. The boy then put the camera down and hugged it before falling asleep.

"I don't think you should sleep there..." Emil said even though he knew that the boy couldn't hear him. He then heard a small creak and looked around but saw nothing. When he looked back down, the sleeping boy was gone. He then walked into a random room, continuing his search for Iceland.

"Iceland? Where are you?" He called out. The lights suddenly turned on and he found two people infront of him. The shorter one out of the two had a little, white hat on and the taller one had glasses. Their faces were also hidden behind a mask.

"Hello! Welcome to the Nordics' house! We haven't had guests in a long time! Right, Sve?" The shorter one said. The taller one nodded his head in response.

"What is your name?" The shorter one asked Emil.

"My name is Emil..." Emil replied back. He didn't know why but he felt a bit nervous.

"Hm... You look like someone we know... Well, very nice to meet you, Emil! I'm Finland and this is Sweden." The shorter one said, pointing to him then the taller one beside him.

"Those are countries... More countries..." Emil said quietly.

"Of course! We represent countries!" Finland said, making it seem like it was obvious.

"Aren't you a country too?" Sweden asked Emil.

"No. I don't think I am..." Emil replied back. "Can I leave now?"

Finland looked at Emil sadly. "Why?"

"It's already dark outside. I just have to get something then go home." Emil said.

"The door's locked." Sweden stated.

"Well, can you unlock it for me?" Emil asked.

"Of course! But you must do a favour for us!" Finland said, making Emil get a bit irritated. He just wanted to leave.

Sweden nodded. "It's the only way to unlock the door."

"I don't have time for that!" Emil yelled out at them.

"Please... We just don't want you to leave yet..." Finland pleaded.

"It might be the last time you get to talk to us..." Sweden said quietly.

Before they could say anything else, Emil ran to the door and kicked it as hard as he can, making the door break open. He quickly ran out and started to look for Iceland again until someone stopped him. It was the boy with the camera from earlier.

"Picture?" The boy asked, holding up the camera.

"You already got my picture." Emil said.

"Oh..." The boy sighed.

"What's your name?" Emil suddenly asked him.

"Hong-" A rumbling noise interupted the boy. Emil quickly looked around but saw nothing. When he looked back at where the boy was, he was gone. He then walked into a room and looked around. He found a man with spiky, blonde hair sitting on the floor, hiding his face in his hands.

"Hello?" Emil called out to the man.

"Where is he? Why did he leave? Why did they take him away?" The man asked to no one.

"Excuse me." Emil said, tapping the man's shoulder.

The man flinched then jumped up and hugged Emil. "ICELAND!"

"I'm not Iceland, I'm Emil." He said, shoving the man off. He then looked at the man's appearance. He was was wearing a long, black jacket and a mask. The mask's mouth was in the shape of a smile but there were tear marks coming from its eyes.

"You look alot like Iceland! Our little Icey..." The man sounded sad but suddenly cheered up again. "I'm Denmark, the king of Northern Europe!"

Emil sighed. He just met this man but he already thought that he was annoying. He then remembered the questions that Denmark was asking himself. "Who left you?"

"Oh! You listened to the questions, didn't ya? Iceland left me. Iceland left all of us." Denmark looked down sadly.

"Iceland? The little boy? Who really
is he?" Emil asked.

Denmark pushed Emil out the door. "Find the clock. Your question will be answered there."

Before Emil could say anything else, the door was slammed shut. He sighed then slowly started walking to another room.

"Picture?" A voice suddenly asked. He recognized the voice right away.

Emil looked down at the boy with the camera. "You already took a picture of me. Do I have to keep reminding you?"

"Sorry..." The boy murmured.

"Now will you tell me what your name is?" Emil asked.

"Hong Kong. You probably don't remember me... It's been, like, 100 years since you last saw me... I also look a bit different..."

"I can't even remember that name..." Emil sighed.

"You'll remember soon, Ice." Hong Kong said. Before Emil could reply back, the boy disappeared.

The door to the room behind him suddenly swung open, almost hitting him. He quickly turned around and peeked into the room to check if it was safe. The room had five flags on the walls. He couldn't recognize the flags no matter how hard he thought. He then walked into the room and found a grandfather clock. He slowly walked towards it and noticed that the hands weren't moving.

"It's frozen." A voice behind him said. Emil quickly turned around and saw a man with a familiar cross clip in his hair and, like all the others, a mask covering his face.

"I'm Norway." The man said. "I'm sure you don't remember me, Emil."

Emil was surprised that the man knew his name. "How do you know my name?"

"I'm Iceland's brother, or Emil's brother..." Norway said.

Emil was now confused. "Iceland and I are two seperate people..."

"You are Iceland and you are Emil... Why did you leave us? Why did they have to attack you? Why can't you just wake up? We can't move on without you. It's like we're stuck in time." Norway said.

"I have no idea what you're talking about!" Emil yelled at him.

Norway just ignored Emil. "What did we ever do to you? We were family. We all broke apart because of you."

"It's not my fault!" Emil yelled but Norway ignored him again.

"If you wake up, we can all be together again. Wake up. Just wake up." Norway mumbled.

"I'm already awake!" Emil's head was hurting from confusion.

"WAKE UP!" Norway suddenly lunged at him.

Before Norway could get to him, a flash of light blinded him. He winced in pain as the light stabbed his eyes. He quickly closed his eyes before the light could hurt them more.

~~~~~~
After a few seconds, he opened his eyes. He was in a field of coffins. One specific coffin caught his attention. Four people were surrounding it. One had a white hat on, one was tall and had glasses on, one had spiky hair and the last one had a cross clip in his hair.
"Why did you leave us, Iceland?" The one with spiky hair asked. He recognized him as Denmark.
"You could've stayed with us..." The one who said that had a white hat on. He recognized him as Finland.
"We should've stopped you from leaving..." The one with glasses mumbled. He recognized him as Sweden.
"This war never should've happened... I wish you can wake up again..." The one with cross clip said quietly. He recognized him as Norway.
He slowly walked towards the four and the coffin. The four didn't seem to notice him. It was like he was invisible. He then looked at the coffin as a man walked by and put a flower and a picture on it. He suddenly recognized that man as Hong Kong, but an older version than the one from earlier. He slowly looked over at the picture. It was a picture of him. He then looked at the name written on the coffin.
'Emil Steilsson, representative of the Republic of Iceland.'
Emil gasped. Tears formed in his eyes as he remembered everything that happened. There was a huge war and he went against the Nordics, under control of the enemy nation. He was defeated and killed by other countries and the Nordics were too late to get him back onto their side.
"Time stopped and is now frozen in your world. It's frozen for us too because of you... We'll never get over your death..." Norway said quietly.
"We'll never forget you..." All four of them said together, putting a hand on the coffin.
"Time stands still in my world now... One day, I'll fix that clock and I'll come back to you all as a new nation or a human." Emil said before his vision faded away.
