The Change

They had all found themselves a place to be in the field behind the buildings. With the farmer's permission of course - Abby walked up to where Sebastian was looking out over at the dying sun.

"It's beautiful isn't it," Sebastian said as Abby approached, not even sparing her a glance. "How even in this chaos, there is time to watch the sunset on the horizon. People willing to allow people to sleep on their private property - makes you see the importance of life." He finished, rubbing his arms.

"Yeah, one thing, though?" She said, coming up next to him. He hummed a wordless sound, turning his head to face her. "Why did turning on your hotspot comes to mind when you were lost. I don't think that was a part of the training we received," she said, smiling cheekily up at him.

"Because I knew that you would come. That tracking me through the signal that it produced would come to mind, I trusted that you knew what to do. You always do," Sebastian smiled to her.

"Thanks," she smiled back to him before they both turned to watch the last of the sun setting.

"Like how you always come to save me," Sebastian then whispered, too quiet for Abby to hear.

The red glow faded to pink before fading to black, the stars shining in the midnight sky. The moon shined down on them, creating a pale light.

After staring up at the night sky and taking in the different shapes of the night, Abby started to shiver. Lacking in any of the warm clothing that the others have - their own or borrowed. Noticing the way that Abby had begun to shake, Sebastian took off his second coat. He knew how cold it was out. He had thermals on, two coats, and he could still feel the drop in temperature. The grass was icing up beneath their feet.

He draped it over her, doing up the button on the hood so that it stayed on her. "Trust us to be stuck outside on the only winter night in summer." He joked to her.

"Yeah, always our luck," she joked back, gripping the coat around her. She pulled the hood over her head, the white fur brushing delicately against her cheeks.

Placing his hand on her back, he started to lead them back to the campsite. "Time that we start to head back." He stated before they began to walk away from where they were previously standing.

"Yeah... But I don't know what we will do to sleep though..." Abby said, looking over at Sebastian.

"The others all have something. Luckily that these children kept to their record of being over-prepared, they were just short of bringing a tent. Leo being his overprotective self, has brought enough for Peter as well as himself. Melody was already asleep, the moment we got to the field she curled up with her clothes. I have thermals on as well as having a large blanket that I had brought in case something was to go wrong. So that leaves you," Sebastian explained. "Now, thanks to you not having any idea of this happening and being the water-sports instructor. You don't have anything. You have my coat, so that should have a small chance of staying warm." Sebastian finished as they reached the collective group.

Leo's whisper echoed around them. "It is time to head to sleep now. The sun is down, and soon it will be so cold you will struggle to get to sleep. So I expect you all to be silent and eyes closed within ten minutes!"

No matter the fact he said it in a whisper. His voice held dominance almost purely found in the military, and the response would put most cadets to shame. They all hurried around in orderly chaos. Before they were all finished their instructions with five minutes to spare. The instructors looked on, impressed.

Peter and Leo chose a space that was away from the children, but not too much in case something was to happen.

They were asleep in moments, happily snuggled up.

Melody, as said before, was already well asleep. Although she was not going to like waking up surrounded by children.

Now Abby and Sebastian found themselves far away to the children. Closer to the shelter of a building on the edge of the field but also having a meter bubble surrounding them. However, after having to try and sleep in the freezing cold, Abby was unable to sleep. She surrendered herself sorrowfully to having to shiver awake through the whole night.

Sebastian awoke to see her shivering. He felt instantly bad that he was quite toasty and warm while she was freezing. "Abby?" He whispered, "Abby? Come here," he then whispered again when he had got her attention. He opened his arm in an invitation, seeing the hesitation he whispered to her back, "no one will have to know. This way, you will be warm."

That seemed to be the final straw as she crawled her way over to him and curled up next to him. She was asleep within seconds of him, lowering his arm down and over her.

When Abby started to wake, she felt fur against the back of her neck while warm flesh against her cheek. Beneath her hands was a soft yet warm material. She felt nice and warm, although she noticed that she was in her day clothes as well as a solid material beneath her. Her pillow moved. Groaning as she felt something that like an arm tightened around her. She pried her eyes opened. She was quickly adjusting to see that Sebastian was the pillow that moved. That his arm was around her meaning that her suspicions were correct.

"Bass," she whispered, shaking him. When he only grumbled and curled around her more, she continued, "Bass, wake up. Bass, I need to get up."

This time he did awake, his eyes fluttered open briefly before closing again. Then they shot open back, propelling his body away from the ground. He blushed so brightly; a tomato would have hidden in shame.

They made their way back to the group, happy to see that everyone else was still asleep. They set forwards starting a plan of action and what they would do. They had no real place of shelter. Nor did they have any way to get enough food to last them until someone was to notice them missing. They were unable to call anyone, much too all their annoyances. Now they needed to find a different place to rest. The farmer was only able to allow his field for the single night; after that, then they would have to move elsewhere.

The farmer's wife, on the other hand, suggested that they head to the woods. Pretend that it was an expedition until someone realised that they were missing. Then they could go home again.

She was right. There was no need to panic the children. Food would be passed over to them until they were gone, but it would not be a lot. There were too many mouths to feed for them all to stay well fed.

"Alright, than people! Gather round!" Leo shouted as everyone moved around into their places. "We are going to be doing an exploration, taking time through the forest."

"This is a way that we can test the skills that you have learned over the two weeks we have already had together," Abby added before Sebastian butted in.

"Split yourselves in a team, if there is only one boy, then find another, the same for the females. The groups should around even amount with the other groups as well as having it so that everyone can be paired up." Sebastian explained, looking around the group.

Soon the children were hurrying around into the different groups, and we're facing them in their new groups. The adults looked around at them and saw that they had done as they were asked the first time. Maybe that was from the shock of the situation that they were in, but they were not going to look a gifted horse in the mouth.

"Alright! Off we go!" Melody said, clapping her hands together. The children shot off full of excitement for the day.

Soon the playfulness and excitement of the children had worn off as they continued walking through most of the day.

Now they were all walking together in their groups – although the groups had almost all mingled together now – in an almost silence. There was a range of sounds coming from the children. They were yawning as well as grumbling about how much they ached and pained.

Between both Abby and Sebastian, the youngest of the children was walking; he kept tripping slightly.

Sebastian and Abby kept sending worried looked to each other; the child would not be able to walk for much longer. Although they were not allowed to pick up or even touch the children, this could be looked over in the situation.

As the child fell forwards again, Sebastian grabbed him under his arms and lifted the small boy onto his hip. The moment that the child was in place, it was like a switch had gone off. The child was asleep within moments of his head, hitting Sebastian's shoulder.

Abby and Sebastian sped up to walk next to the rest of the adults again. They were going to question the child but then saw both their expressions and how exhausted the child looked even in their sleep. Peter nodded his head to them from Leo's side – Leo had become even more overprotective of him now.

They trekked on soon the day became night, and night became day again. This cycle continued for a week until there was a commotion out in the front of the pack of children.

Leo strode forwards, dragging the shattered Peter with him, to see what the commotion was about. The disturbance was a child that had thought to have seen a flashlight in the distance, and now all the children were crowding around and looking for the source.

The children were quickly split into their groups before they all headed off again, looking to try and find the source. Even the youngest members of the group had perked up and were looking on their own two feet again.

There was a shout before Abby saw out of the corner of her eye, one of the children scurry up a large tree as if he was a squirrel. The rest of the children in that group circled the tree but did not get close. It puzzled her and when she asked Sebastian about it, puzzled him as well.

A small object was dropped to the floor; the adults couldn't get a clear view of what it was before the children pounced on it like lions. Within seconds of the children seeing and reaching the fallen object, a massive cheer went around them.

The adults soon knew why, it was an object that the children – between themselves – meant that there was a road in sight.

The object was a small toy car that one of the smaller children had. The child that climbed up the tree soon came back down and was cheered on by the other children as if they were their hero. They surrounded him and laughed and jeered together, clapping him on the back.

The road itself was about a week away, but Melody stepped forwards and said that she could power through and get there herself in a day and a half. She would then contact the police and see whether they could get something to pick them up. Maybe then they would be able to gather the children's parents, perhaps.

As night began to fall again, Melody set off with a day rucksack with food and water to gather the people needed at the road. The children all shuffled excitedly once again at the thought of reaching home again.

The adults began to clean out the area, creating a clearing that could hold them all. Within the centre of the clearing, Abby and Sebastian started to make a fire. Children were running around to help them with it.

"Look at the sticks I have found!" One child rushed, presenting the sticks to the two central adults.

"It's very nice, here you can put it next to me so that it can be used," Sebastian smiled up at the gleeful child.

The child complied immediately and rushed off to gather some more sticks.

Just as the child disappeared into the trees, there was a crashing sound followed by a panicked shout of, "PETER!"
