The Beginning of the Change

The next week was uneventful. Other than someone spilling half the milk over themself. Then half the other children every morning. But, uneventful none-the-less.

The time that all the children went out was also uneventful.

Until after lunch, where they decided to combine the groups for a bit. While this was initially thought to be something that they should fear. The way that all the children behaved together and in the small groups allowed them to do this. This was not something that should be noted in fear.

"You sure this is safe?" Sebastian asked, glancing at the branch in uncertainty.

All the adults were looking at a lone oak tree in a forest of birch. The tree was older than all their ages together and then some. The lowest branch was close to two meters in the air. There was a joking suggestion that they should climb up to that branch. Now Peter was saying that it is possible and that every one of the adults should have a go at it. There were some doubts. Some ever about whether he would be able to do it himself.

"Yeah, come on, the others will go first to show you," Peter sighed. With his final word, he broke out into a small run springing up the tree, his feet almost dancing up the bark until his hands reached the branch. Something a good meter above his normal head height. His strong fingers grab hold as he swung himself onto the branches.

To the cheering of the few watching children.

His eyes scanned the crowd of children. Sharp to all them and to whether they were or were not doing what they were meant to be doing. His conclusion, none of them were doing what they were meant to be doing.

"Are you not meant to be making shelters?" He questioned them as they quickly got back to work.

He found a bit of humour in their scurrying around. In a hope to make it look like they were doing what they were meant to do. That what they were doing a moment ago was a part of that as well.

"Oh, let them have their fun. It's not every day they see someone get into a tree that was called un-scalable without help. Without help," Leo said, holding back a laugh.

"Ah, so they want to praise their lord?" Peter smirked.

"Wow, Leo's been rubbing off on you! You have a full-blown ego now." Abby laughed.

"I say it where it needs it." Peter shrugged, making his way to a higher part of the tree so that he had a better vantage point.

"Okay, Leo next," Sebastian stated, wanting to see whether the branch would take Leo's mass. Shrugging, Leo took charging at the tree, his feet powerfully bouncing off the bark of the tree. His hands grabbed and pulled on the branch. Soon he was on the branch, sitting tenser on the branch then what Peter was. He got off, landing heavily on his feet.

"Alright then, Melody next," Sebastian stated. Melody was less than elegant but still managed to get hold of the branch and get herself onto it. She did come off rather quickly, though. She said that this was because she wanted to allow others to have a go - no one believed her.

"Guess I'm next then," Abby shrugged before charging at the trees.

Even if they were told not to watch, the children still watched the adults compete against each other. Their shelter collapsed behind them. But they continued to watch as Abby flung herself up into the tree.

Her fingers brushed ever so slightly against the branch. Before - thanks to her small stature - she started to fall again back to the ground. As she landed on her feet, she grumbled something about an unfair height advantage. Igniting a few giggles from the watching children.

"Alright, my time then," Sebastian said, rolling his shoulder. He took off running towards the tree before he launched himself up the tree, his feet almost walking up the bark. His hands grab hold of the branch, securely holding him. However, Peter could see something different from the branch. The branch bent, creaking slightly. Abby also caught this, and seeing Peter's expression, moved beneath was Sebastian.

Seconds later, a loud crack echoed through the trees as the branch broke. Sebastian tumbling onto Abby, who broke his fall somewhat.

"Owe," he mumbled, getting up.

"Yeah 'owe'," Abby mumbled after, getting herself up from the floor.

"Whoops, sorry..." Sebastian said to Abby, a guilt look covering his face.

"No worries, I moved 'cause I saw the branch was about to give way. So it's not your fault that you fell on me," Abby shrugged.

The children got back to work, groaning how their entertainment had stopped. Also how they now had to start from scratch.

As night fell, the children had finished their dinner; they hurried out of the building to find the gem again. Only one night they had been unable to see it, they were even more determined to find it once again.

"Any plans, tree-breaker, on what to do for their 'special' treat at the end of the six weeks?" Melody asked, almost sneering at him.

"No, but I thought we said about how we would come up with it by the end of the six weeks," Sebastian stated, narrowing his eyes.

"Guys, do not start fighting each other. We have to all be together at least for the next five weeks." Peter stated, preventing any of them from replying to each other.

"Yeah, so don't stand at each other's throats," Abby said, standing so that she could separate Sebastian and Melody from each other.

"Hey, let's go check how the children are doing," Sebastian stated, standing up after Abby.

"Alright, sounds good," she replied before they walked out of the building.

When they got out there, they were met by the sight of the children running around the place. Checking every place the gem could be. Walking further in, they could see it was not as unorganised as it seemed. But in fact, there were different groups. Going around doing the various skills that they had got over that week. There was a shout from one of the groups before they all congregated on the grass. Oblivious to the pair of adults watching them. They turned as a group towards where the building was, and at that moment, they saw the adults watching them.

A couple of the children squeaked at the sudden appearance—much to the amusement of the other children and the pair of adults.

"We got the gem, and the sun has not set!" The children exclaimed almost at once, presenting the gem to the pair of adults.

"Hmm, yes, I see that you have found the gem. Will we start to head back in then?" Sebastian stated as he looked closer at the gem.

As one large group, they all made their way back into the building. Their approaching silhouette backed by the setting red sun over the glassy lake. The last one disappearing into the old farmhouse as the sun settled beneath the horizon.

Abby currently was taking a tub full of water out of the building to dispose of it. As she could not use the sink and she did not want to have to head into the toilets and showers to get rid of the water. When she had tipped it away, she started to head back to where the front door was.

What she was met was a different set of doors. A long row of grey brick walls and the grass a dirtier colour surrounding up to the new entry.

"Yeah, it's strange. The building is gone like it never existed." Leo said, appearing from behind her. He was glancing around, looking over at the different places.

Abby walked back to where she previously was, noticing that there was a set of glass windows. When she looked through them, she could see stone foundations, covered with ivy and green moss. They were the foundations for what used to be the farm buildings. In the foundations, she could see the children. All were looking around, their confusion plastered in thick masks over their faces.

With another glance, she could see that Leo had made his way down to where Peter was. He was helping him rest down onto one of the stones. She was stopped from looking any closer when her phone made a noise, alerting her to something.

Checking it, she could see Sebastian's hot-spot had been turned on. There was a small amount of signal being produced by it, but enough for her to have the ability to track where he was. She might end up bumping into the others on the way as well - but that does not matter.

Walking further, she saw that she lost all her signal. Walking towards where Leo had spoken to her, the signal grew more substantial.

She walked through to the ruins, eyes widening as she walked into what looked like a modern town centre. Off to the side, there were Melody and her group.

Rushing over to them, she also saw that they were all wearing faces of high confusion. After pointing them in the correct direction, she left them. She was continuing to track down where Sebastian was.

She made her way through different shops, each posing various problems. Soon, after going through a glass-walled clothing shop, she came across a small outcrop. A tree was sitting in the centre, surrounded by patterns—step-like chairs on her right and - sitting on a bench to her right.

Background by a wall and coffee shop - there was Sebastian. Who upon spotting her, leapt to his feet and made his way over, his group following after him. "What's happened?" Sebastian asked her the moment that he reached her. Looking around, he then continued. "We were walking when we appeared here." He looked at her, asking as to whether she knew what had happened because of this.

"I don't know as to why this happened. Only that the building disappeared," Abby replied to Sebastian. She voiced her confusion as to the situation. "All the others have met up at the foundations of the building; we should too." She then added, looking around at Sebastian and his group.

"All right, I guess you should lead the way back to the foundations then?" Sebastian said, signalling for Abby to lead the way.

"Alright." Abby said, looking over the group of children and child minded adult in turn, "it's this way." She finished, leading them down the winding path that she had previously walked.

Abby could hear the children behind her as she walked. They were all within a range of shock and awe at everything happening around them. Some were unable to take in everything, due to the vital fact of disappearing from the field to suddenly being in a town centre. Others, like the one dragging behind, were watching what was going on around them. How different people were behaving, what was being sold in each of the various shops.

The trip was uneventful. Just a group of people finding their way through a town centre to reach the foundations of a building. Like you could call anything that happened moments ago a regular occurrence. Yep, totally something that would occur at a daily rate.

Finally, getting together, everyone stood in the foundations. In a tight horseshoe, the leaders in the gap. Everyone looked equally confused as to what had happened. Unsure as to what they should be doing at that moment.
