2~Katniss: age ten
Being the first day of the forth grade, I find myself nervous. All new class, new teacher, new swing of things. My Mama walks in my bedroom.
"Baby girl, time to wake up!"
She pauses to see me already awake in my bed, staring out my window.
"Are you nervous?" I nod.
She sits beside me and the bed tips a little. My unbrushed hair is placed behind my ears with her gentle fingers.
"It'll be just fine, you have a friend in your class this year."
I find my grin growing wide. I know exactly who she's talking about. That causes me to run straight to my closet to get ready.
Mom braids my hair in the living room while Daddy makes breakfast. I smell it in the kitchen and as soon as she ties off my braid, I run and take a seat next to my six year old sister, Prim.
I notice her quack, before taking her fork and stabbing it into her pancake.
"Well, good morning little duck." I kiss her forehead.
"Goodmorning. Ducks go quack!" she giggles.
After we eat, I help Prim get her backpack onto her shoulders, and I take mine off the chair.
"Have a great day sweetheart! We love you!"
Daddy kisses our foreheads, and Mommy tucks loose hair behind our ears.
"You're going to have fun today, I know it." She smiles at me.
I give her a hug she didn't see coming, and I'm out the door, my hand attached to my sisters.
"Are you excited for school Katniss?"
"If you are, I am." I tell her.
We're walking and talking about her favorite things when we pass the bakery.
"Wait!" I say, backing up my steps and looking into the store window.
There he is, same floppy hair, blue eyes, and chubby cheeks.
I smile at him. He walks outside carrying three paper bags, making the door ring a bell above him.
He approaches me and I let go of Prim's hand to hug him tight.
"We're in the same class this year!" I rest my head on his shoulder.
"I haven't seen you Katniss! How was your family trip?"
"Super fun! I missed you."
He looks at me and smiles.
"Your hair is in only one braid!" He exclaims.
"My Mother did it different today." I laugh, as we start our walk to school, my hand again laced with Prim's.
"You still look just as beautiful!" Prim shouts.
"Thank you little duck." I squeeze her little hand.
"She's absolutely right." says Peeta.
I blush, quickly changing the topic after thanking him.
As we stop to wait for cars before crossing the street, Peeta hands us each a paper bag.
"For the both of you." He smiles.
"Really?"
I open the bag suspiciously, and there sits two steaming cheesebuns, four cookies, and a perfectly iced cupcake. All in different tupperware containers.
"No way!"
Prim squeaks as she looks in her paperbag.
My mouth drops open as we peek in each other's. Prim has similar treats, but her cookies are decorated with yellow icing, to look like primroses.
"You didn't have to-" I start,
"Oh, but I most certainly wanted to." he smiles.
If only he knew, the way to my heart is food.
"Thank you, that's very sweet!" I kiss his cheek.
As we cross the road to the school, I hold onto both Peeta's and Prim's hands, thinking about how excited I am for the forth grade to begin.
