Doubt
He stared at her, searching his mind for who she was, he knew she was somebody to him and that each time he thought of her it really hurt to actually think about her and who she was and what she did or didn't do to him. Bucky tightened his grip on her shirt, pressing her harder against the vehicle.
"Winter's Princess." Aurora took a breath, he only knew a part of her, how did Hydra attack his mind so he forgot who she was? The brunette girl nodded, whimpering as he raised her back in the air and raised a knife to her face.
"What's my name?" She whimpered, testing her luck, Aurora noticed the struggle and checked the man's mind to see what they did to him. She flinched at the excessive mental torture he went through, watched as they made it be that she was associated with pain and torture, made it be that if he were to think of her he'd feel pain and it appeared to be worse than what he already felt.
The girl showed him a few quick memories, knowing it would hurt him but brought them back to his attention to show him what had been lost in the last 8 months. He didn't like what he saw, he stabbed her in the shoulder and left the knife in her body. The girl cried out in pain, yet placed her hand on Bucky's and smiled softly at him, the girl took a breath and kept eye contact with the man.
"Aurora." The girl could see the difference in his eyes, he dropped her to the ground and took a step back. Aurora refrained from glaring at him, she glanced at the knife in her body and then watched the man that she wanted to help so badly. He looked at his hands for a moment, then back at the girl as something shifted in his mind. Aurora's heart increased as he pressed his hand against her chest, pressing her against the car they were near and leant closer to her.
"It's me, your, Ro... your doll," Aurora whispered, her eyes softening as she carefully moved his hand away from her chest. Bucky moved his hand to her face, looking at the details that she had visible and the flicks of scars poking out from underneath her sleeves and clothes.
"You're still not afraid," Bucky muttered, his face contorting between the broken man and the assassin.
"Never will be," Aurora whispered, moving his hand away from her face, her heart jumped in her chest as he hit the car she was leaning against and moved away from her. He grabbed his weapon, ready to complete the mission he was set to do, she shook her head, took a breath and followed him to the action. Aurora didn't know what to do as Bucky fought against Steve, clearly, the Captain didn't know it was his bestie from the 40s, she gave him a helping hand and jumped onto Bucky's back, she just seemed to be like a backpack to him as he continued beating Steve up and carried her around with him.
Aurora kicked him in the groin, apologising silently as she started attacking him again, she knew that she shouldn't but she took the knife out of her body and staring slashing Bucky's suit off, trying to get through the tough leather to then injury him to grab his attention.
"Enough! He is not your mission! I am! Come after me! Take me back to them, you know they still need me! " Aurora shouted, rolling her eyes as he yanked the knife out of her hands and took a swipe at her but turned his attention back to Steve.
The girl had new cuts and bruises already forming, she quickly began fiddling with the gearing that connected the arm to his body, trying her best to take it apart to stop him front attacking Steve but as the two men fought, her fingers got crushed against metal a lot, making her assistance slower and more painful for her.
Her blood ran down his back, yet it was normal for her and he wouldn't notice, the soldier got sick of her attempts to steer his attention away from her and grabbed her injured arm, tossing her into the back of an open van and slammed the doors shut.
The girl huffed in annoyance, ignoring the wound oozing with blood, she kicked the doors opened and stared at Steve as he looked at Bucky in shock. The mask was off, and Aurora slowly began moving forward, taking the knife out of Steve's hands and facing the man that once held the title of being her lover.
"Bucky?"
"Who the hell is Bucky?" Aurora dropped the knife, he didn't know who he was. He lost the process she tried to make with him, and he once again became what he hated, Bucky didn't have the broken eyes that a broken man carried but the eyes of a programmed killer, unsure of anything but what he was told to do. Bucky still proceeded with his attempts to finish his mission, he took a shot at Steve but Sam came in and saved the day.
Bucky's confusion started to grow, Aurora could see it, he raised the gun again and this time Aurora jumped in front of the bullet, collapsing to the ground as she took it to the stomach, just as she hit the ground, Natasha used a weapon in Bucky's area but he ran away before he could be hit.
"Motherfucker!" Aurora shouted, almost forgetting the pain of being shot, Aurora glanced around, her pain being replaced with terror as S.H.I.E.L.D surrounded them, knowing who these people were terrified her, would they take her back to be an experiment? Will they actually wipe her mind instead of torturing her? What would they do to her? It scared her, she knew trying to escape would only get her killed and it was habit to not do that sort of thing from her days in Hydra.
Two agents dragged her up, she had power-reducing cuffs placed on her, and she was shoved into her seat next to Steve. Her blood was still leaving her body, just like Natasha if she didn't get any help soon, she would die from blood loss and she could already feel the effects taking place.
"It was him. He looked right at me like he didn't even know me."
"How is that even possible? It was, like, 70 years ago."
"Zola. Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43. Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and..."
"None of that's your fault, Steve."
"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky." Aurora took a breath, staring at Steve and clenched her eyes shut as she spoke.
"Bucky went through a lot, I didn't see all of it but I saw what he went through during my imprisonment. What they did to him... what they're doing to him is horrendous, they wipe his mind and torture him, and they turned him into a weapon, he only remembered me because of a promise he made right before he left for England." Aurora thought back on that, she smiled to herself at the memory and then continued explaining what Bucky went through.
"They couldn't make him forget me, so they turned me into Winter's Princess, they left me with my own human strengths and my only defences were my powers. Instead of wiping my mind to make me compliant, they tortured me and as long as my sister was in the picture I let them because she's my baby sister. Steve, it's not your fault, Bucky- he's strong and brave. That man broke through the mental wall that they gave him, he did a lot for me just to keep me safe. Deep down inside, he's still Bucky- he's still the man that we know."
"He helped you and your sister escape, didn't he?" Aurora nodded, her head drooping to the side as she rested her head on his shoulder, the blood was starting to ooze down and puddle on the floor, both Aurora and Natasha were in need of urgent medical attention.
"We need to get a doctor here. If we don't put pressure on these wounds, they're both going to bleed out here in the truck." One of the masked agents flashed the zapper, and seeing the rod become active scared her, so Aurora fell off her seat, hitting the floor with a thud and watched as the agent zapped the other agent out.
"Ah! That thing was squeezing my brain. Who's this guy?"
