Chapter 5: The Dream Isn't Done
Rainbow Dash’s POV
Ever since we had arrived at the party, I had a goal of taking this party as an opportunity to maybe get to know Fluttershy better. Well… I guess we know that I might not have that chance after all. Getting sucked into the crowd wasn’t exactly my form of fun. But since Pinkie Pie was here with me… I guess you can say it was a bonus. That girl definitely knows how to party.
“Hey, Pinks!” I called out to her, and luckily she turned my way with her signature smile. “How about we have a little fun with the punch?” She looked at me with confusion, but slowly she started to catch my drift. We both giggled with each other before dashing towards the bowl of fruit punch. Pinkie grabbed a couple of plastic cups as I began to search for anything sharp.
I looked around the kitchen and dug through the drawers, constantly checking my surroundings for any people that may have been watching. Luckily they were all caught up talking and messing around so I was able to pull out a fork.
Quickly, I returned to Pinkie Pie and she handed me a cup. I swiftly stabbed the side of the cup with the silverware, and noticed three small holes in them, just an inch below the rim of the cup. I repeated the process with three more cups then handed them to Pinkie, who placed them back with the others, as if nothing happened.
We walked side-by-side with each other, but stopped once we reached the corner of the room where other teenagers were lounging around. For the past few minutes, we kept watch on the cups we rigged, hoping to see who the unlucky drinkers would be. Another minute or so had passed and soon, two girls came walking up to get themselves some drinks. Unfortunately, one of those girls was Fluttershy.
Pinkie Pie froze just like I had. We watched anxiously as her and Twilight picked up their own cups – one of them being the prank cup. I felt sick to my stomach. If Fluttershy ends up getting it, she probably won’t forgive me, or even talk to me! What a horrible first impression, Dash…
Twilight casually poured some punch into the cups. Fluttershy eyed the contents of the drink – she probably got the rigged one… Twilight muttered a few words, and soon they began to laugh together. I couldn’t help but feel rather jealous.
“They’re about to drink it…” Pinkie Pie said in a hushed voice. I glimpsed over at her and noticed that she looked scared. My eyes once again fixated at Fluttershy. They both took a drink and I swear, I never felt this nervous before in my life. Surprisingly, nothing happened. Perhaps, one of them drank the cup a different way. Pinkie and I sighed out in relief. In a matter of seconds, the pair began to walk away somewhere else.
I was just about to comment on something to Pinkie Pie, until her phone began to ring. She pulled out her cell, and her eyes brightened up just as much as her smile had once she saw the caller ID. Pinkie held the phone in front of my face, and I recognized the person almost at once – Cheese Sandwich.
Chuckling, I watched as she answered the phone in her usual hyperactive self. I pretty much tuned the conversation out, as I began to think of ways to maybe hang out with Fluttershy without her thinking I’m just another jock trying to get into her pants.
‘Maybe you should look for her right now… Steal her away from Twilight or something – even if it’s just for a few minutes. Buy some time just to be with her… Pinkie’s probably going to hang out with her crush right now so… Why not hang out with yours, too?’ I thought to myself while looking around.
“… Dashie? Hello? You there, Dashie?” I snapped out of my own thoughts and quickly looked over at Pinkie Pie who had a goofy smile on her face as usual, though her eyes seemed to speak for themselves: Are you okay? I simply nodded at her, but instead of shrugging the topic off like she normally did, she asked, “What are you thinking about?”
“Uh… It’s not really anything, Pinks. It’s just that… I don’t know.” Pinkie Pie’s smile faltered, but she knew better than to ask any more questions.
“I’m gonna go look for Cheese. He said he was already outside. Are you sure you want to be left alone? Or do you wanna come along with me?”
“Nah, I’ll be fine. Go have fun with Cheese. You guys haven’t really spent much alone time together,” I smiled at her, and before I knew it she pulled me in for a bear hug while laughing. I gasped for air, “P-Pinkie! I… Can’t… Let g-go, please!”
“Okey dokey lokey!” She released me and I was finally able to breathe once more. My eyes looked up at Pinkie for a second and I could already tell that she was both excited and nervous to spend quality time with her soon-to-be boyfriend. Before you say anything, yes, Cheese and I actually had a conversation at school and he was planning on asking her out today at the party.
Pretty soon she said bye to me, and began skipping away into the crowd. I mentally laughed, and once again began to walk into the crowd. Almost at once, I spotted Spike and Rarity cuddling with each other on the leather couch that was set almost in the center of the room. I grinned to myself, and began to walk towards the sliding doors that would lead me to Soarin’s backyard.
Once I let myself outside, the sounds of water splashing back and forth, and people chattering away filled my eardrums. Several feet from where I stood was a large rectangular pool that was full of teens I recognized from my school – some from my classes. On the left side from where the pool was at, was a circular Jacuzzi that occupied three couples.
A group of guys stood near the edge of the pool, and from the looks of it, I could already tell that a fight was going to ignite any second now, judging from the glares being exchanged from one guy to another. Although I would love to stay and see how it ends, I have my own goals today.
I looked up from where I had been standing and noticed lights hung up all over the edges of the house, and shone like stars in the night sky. After looking at them I began walking around the pool with my hands in my pockets, just thinking.
My mind basically just shut off my entire surroundings, just leaving me with my thoughts. Come on, Dash… You shouldn’t even let this girl get to you! Obviously she’s stunning as Hell, and as timid as could be… Okay, damn it – you like her. But then again, you’ve only just met her – and not properly, either. Just pull yourself together… You even promised yourself you wouldn’t date again ever since you had a thing with… Her.
Just thinking to my past relationship two years back sent shivers down my spine. Normally, any sane person would jump back up to their feet and move on – especially if it happened such a long time ago. Unfortunately, that just wasn’t the case for me… That girl was special to me, but then again she just broke me, and humiliated me.
I let out a heavy sigh and felt my shoulders drop a little. You seriously, have to move on from this. That was the past, and now is now. Maybe Fluttershy is good for you. Maybe, just maybe fate brought her here to this school. You never know if she’ll be the answer to solving your problems… You’ll never know unless you t-
My thoughts ended mid-sentence when I crashed into someone. I quickly extended my arm, and grabbed them and pulled them up before they even hit the ground. We both gasped a little when the person fell forward onto me.
“Damn – I’m sorr…” My voice trailed away once I looked down at the girl who I bumped into. Gorgeous pastel pink hair. Captivating teal eyes… Fluttershy.
Both our faces heated up in an instant, and we both threw apologies to each other back and forth. God, I felt ridiculous… We both grew silent, and I noticed Fluttershy playing with her fingers. A nervous habit, maybe? My heart was racing faster than ever before, and I doubt that I stopped blushing like mad.
“Um… Hi, again!” I stammered out, then nervously laughed. Smooth move, Rainbow.
“H-Hello…” She said in reply, almost whispering. Her face was as red as a lobster, and I couldn’t help but smile. She looked down at the ground, and I looked around while thinking of something to say. Ask her if she wants to hang out with you. Ask her if she wants to hang out with you. Ask her!
“Uh, h-hey. Do you maybe want to… Uh,” the words I was planning on saying were on the tip of my tongue but I just couldn’t say them. “You know – uh… Get to know each other…?”
Are you kidding me.
“I-I mean… W-What I MEANT to say was – or what I meant to ASK, was if you know! Do you wanna hang out or something…? We didn’t exactly get to introduce ourselves properly, once you think about it…” I mentally face-palmed myself. Nice job, Rainbow Dash. You blew it for you and for her.
“I would love to.” Fluttershy responded, with a sweet voice. Holy crap… Your awkwardness did the trick. Nice one!
“Awesome! Uh, I mean… Yeah, sure that’s cool. That’s cool.” I heard her giggle adorably, and pretty soon the both of us began to walk towards the front of the house where it was a lot less noisy – minus the music that was blasting through the speakers inside. Throughout the short walk, it was awkward and quiet as Hell. Think of something, and fast!
“So… Fluttershy. Mind telling me a little bit about you? Or we can play ’20 Questions’? Your choice,” I said, with a small smile. I looked to my left where she was at and saw that she was shorter than me by just an inch.
“I wouldn’t really m-mind just talking about myself… If y-you want…” She fixed her gaze somewhere else. I chuckled, and smiled.
“Nah, I don’t really mind. You ARE the new girl here in Canterlot, after all... Tell you what. You tell me about you, and I’ll tell you about me. Sound good?” I could tell she was hesitating about it. “I’ll go first if you want.”
She relaxed and even smiled. My God, she was beautiful… “Yes… I would like that a lot, actually.” I felt a rush of butterflies course through me and I just couldn’t believe how much her presence alone impacted me. We walked for a few more seconds before finally deciding to take a seat underneath a tree that wasn’t too far from the mansion.
“Well… I’m Rainbow Dash. I’m seventeen years old, my birthday is on the first of February… I’m from Cloudsdale, and I’m the top runner in Canterlot High’s school track team, top player in basketball, soccer, and volleyball,” I glanced over at her, and noticed her giving me her absolute attention. “I prefer vanilla cake over any other flavor. I love reading ‘Daring Do’ books, along with the ‘Maneiac’ comic books. Video games, skateboarding, and playing guitar are some other things I love to do.
“In case you might be wondering, I have a little sister named Scootaloo, and she recently just turned fifteen. She’s basically my everything, and I guess you can say she’s a younger version of me,” I looked down at the grass and smiled. “My favorite color is blue and my favorite band is either Green Day or Blink-182… And that… Basically sums up everything about me.” I sat down cross-legged and turned around so that I was now facing Fluttershy. “Your turn.”
She positioned herself so that now we were both facing each other, “Okay… I’m Fluttershy. I’m also seventeen, but my birthday is on the twentieth of April. I’m actually from Cloudsdale too, but I moved to Fillydelphia for a few years, then moved to Ponyville, where I am to this day… I have two younger brothers – one of them is five and his name is Angel, the other is the same age as your sister, and his name is Featherweight.
“I’m pretty much a reader, and I love the ‘Daring Do’ series as well… I’m a fan of strawberry cake, and I usually ride my bike, but since… Something happened to it, I have to take the bus now. I’ve been volunteering at the animal shelter ever since I moved here, and I just love it… My favorite color is either a light yellow or light green. I don’t really have a favorite band since I don’t listen to music as much as others,” She finished with a tiny grin.
We had a fair share of differences, but despite all of that she seemed pretty interesting as far as I know. I would have gotten into more detail about my family, but I’ll save that for another time for when I’m ready for that conversation.
“You seem a lot cooler than I thought. Even though we’ve bumped into each other a lot since we first met – you’re pretty awesome.” I said jokingly and we both began to laugh together. Her laugh sounded just as beautiful and melodic as her voice.
“I’m sorry for bumping into you though… I swear those were all accidents,” Fluttershy replied with a smile.
“I can honestly say the same to you. It’s not every day you bump into the same person plenty of times in one day. Now THAT, we can both agree on,” We laughed some more, and pretty soon we both fell silent, although the smiles we had on our faces remained.
Before either one of us could speak, Fluttershy’s phone began to ring and the sudden sound nearly scared the both of us to death. The pink haired girl answered her phone, and began to talk to whoever it was on the other line.
“I’m here with Rainbow Dash… N-No, we just bumped into each other… Okay… Oh, okay… Okay,” With that final word, she held her phone towards me. I looked down and noticed the number almost immediately: Twilight Sparkle.
I took the phone and spoke into it with a simple ‘Hello’.
“So, you finally got the guts to talk to her, huh?” I swear I could hear the smirk in her voice as she said it. I felt my face heat up, and I looked the other direction so Fluttershy wouldn’t notice.
“Y-Yeah… So what?”
“Oh nothing, nothing,” she giggled on her side of the line. “Well, I just called to make sure if Fluttershy was okay. She doesn’t do well with crowds and all… But I’m glad she’s in good hands. Anyways, I’m ready to go back home.”
“What about the others?” I questioned her, sounding a little suspicious.
“Well, Spike and Rarity are going to walk home together – crazy, I know. Um… Cheese Sandwich is dropping Pinkie Pie off – and did you hear? They’re finally together!”
“Heh… Yeah, I know. Cheese actually talked to me about it a while ago, actually. I just didn’t wanna spoil the surprise for anyone.”
“Wow, that’s no fair… Oh, and Applejack met up with her old friend, Caramel. She said that she’s probably going to get a ride home from him. So that basically just leaves the three of us.”
“All right, we’ll meet up where my car is parked. Flutters and I will be heading there in a bit.” Twilight agreed, then hung up the phone. I handed the phone back to Fluttershy who slid it back into her back pocket.
“So… What happened?” She asked with a small voice.
“Well, party’s over for us. Twilight called so we could leave home already.” I said while getting up. I held my hand in front of Fluttershy, and she shyly grabbed it as I pulled her up to her feet. Just the feeling of her hand in mine made my heart flutter.
We both began walking side-by-side with each other, towards the car I spent so much time and money on. I pulled out the car keys from my pocket and unlocked the car in an instant. Fluttershy opened up the door to the passenger seat and gave me a look that read “Can I sit here or…?”
“Yeah, you can sit there,” I said to her with a laugh. Her face reddened a bit, but she finally took a seat inside and we both put on our seatbelts. A few seconds later, Twilight emerged from the large mansion with a drink in her hand. She waved at the both of us, then began to take a sip from her drink, until the contents came pouring out onto the pavement… I guess you know who was responsible for that happening.
Needless to say, I wound up bursting into a fit of laughter while Twilight was pretty pissed at me for doing that. Fluttershy seemed a bit upset, but I could tell from the look in her eyes, that even she enjoyed it. We ended up dropping off Twilight at her house first, which was pretty much a library. We said our good-bye’s then I began to drive back to Fluttershy’s neighborhood, which only took about ten minutes to get to.
“Here’s my stop…” She said, tapping on my shoulder. I slowed down the car, then finally parked it in her driveway. I looked over at her a bit sadly. I didn’t exactly want this night to end. “Thanks for tonight, Rainbow. Also, thank you for the ride. I hope it wasn’t too much trouble for you or your friends –“
“Our friends,” I said, cutting her off with a short laugh. She grinned, and began to play with her fingers again.
“Well, I should get going already…” She said, and I couldn’t help but feel down about it. She opened the passenger door then stepped out and closed it shut.
“W-Wait!” I said, capturing her attention. She looked back at me, worriedly. “I um… I didn’t get your number…” Both of our faces flushed red and she slowly walked around the car so that she was now just an arm’s length away from where I sat.
She tapped a few things on her phone, then handed it to me. I was about to type in my number when I saw the name of my contact: Dashie. I smiled widely, then typed in my number, saved it then handed it back to her. I told her to wait for a second, as I pulled out my own phone, which was an iPhone 5. The screen was pretty much cracked and all from all the times it fell.
I went to the contacts list, and pressed “Add Contact”, typed in the name “Flutters”, then handed it to Fluttershy. She blushed for the millionth time today, then tapped away at the screen then gave me my phone back.
“I’ll text you later, Shy… You know, if you’re still awake,” I said to her laughing. She giggled then waved bye to me, and began to walk into her house. I put my car on drive again, and soon I was off to my home…
Fluttershy’s POV
I absolutely could not believe what just happened tonight. Rainbow Dash. THE Rainbow Dash actually wanted to hang out with someone like me. And then she asked for my number? This night could not possibly get anymore better. This has got to be a dream…
I walked into my house smiling like crazy, then noticed Angel curled up next to my mom. He was wearing his favorite onesie that had several rabbits printed on them. His snow white hair was messed up and poked in every direction. He looked up at me with his chocolate brown eyes and smiled widely.
“Fluttershy! Fluttershy’s home, mommy!” I couldn’t help but smile from ear-to-ear. He jumped off the couch, ran towards me and hugged my leg. I giggled, and carried him in my arms. My mom closed the book she must have been reading to him, and smiled at me.
“How did the party go? Did you have fun?” She asked, sounding genuinely intrigued. I laughed and nodded.
“It was great. I spent more time with my friends there, so it was good,” I said to her, automatically thinking about Rainbow. I set Angel back down onto the ground, where he scurried back to my mom. “I’m gonna get dressed to go to bed, already. Goodnight you two.”
“Goodnight, sweetie!” My mom called out to me. I walked down the hall and made a turn to my room. I switched on the light, then shut the door behind me and began to change into my pajamas: a pair of green shorts, with a white tank top.
I turned out the lights then made a beeline towards my bed. Just as I snuggled into the covers, my phone vibrated from where I had set it down on my bedside table. I reached over to it, unlocked it then what I saw made me burst into a large smile. A real smile.
