Chapter 28: Nightmare Night Blues
"A little to the left... No, my left, honey," my mom said to me as she held her Polaroid camera in her hands. Today was the night of the party, and Rainbow Dash and I were dressed up in costumes. I was dressed as a vampire, while Rainbow was Daring Do. I moved to the right, and scooted closer to Rainbow as she held her toy whip over her shoulder. We struck a pose as a bright flash filled the room and blinded us in the process. My mom hopped up and down in excitement and took the film as it came out of her bulky camera. She laid it down on the counter and gave both of us a hug.
"Be careful, you too. Don't be doing any Daring Do crap out there," she said to Rainbow Dash with a playful glare. We laughed and headed out of my house. We hopped into Rainbow's car and drove off to Sweet Apple Acres. The drive took about 30 minutes, but when we arrived, the farm was filled with a variety of other students. Many students were lounging in the apple orchard, while the real party was occurring inside the barn. Multicolored lights leaked through the barn and muffled music could be heard through the closed doors of the barn.
Rainbow and I parked the car and headed out in search of our friends. We ran into a couple of Rainbow's friends from gym before finally finding Twilight, Sunset, and Spike together just outside the barn.
"'Sup guys?" Rainbow greeted them and was returned with smiles. Twilight was dressed head to toe as Starswirl the Bearded. Classic Twilight. The navy blue robe she wore touched down to the floor and had all sorts of constellations etched into the fabric. The large hat she wore was the same color scheme and had a few ornaments dangling from the rim of the hat. Just when it couldn't get any better, Twilight even sported his famous snow white beard. Dash snickered beside me. I hit the side of her arm with my hand.
"You guys haven't seen Rarity, have you?" Spike asked, sounding down. We shook our heads and eyed the area we were in. Spike was dressed in a black and green school robe. Underneath, was a white dress shirt with a striped green tie neatly made. A wooden wand tucked into the waistband of his jeans.
"She's probably talking with Coco Pommel. I heard some students from Crystal Prep Academy were going to be here for whatever reason," Sunset said, with a disgusted look in her eye. Her eyes widened, "I hate the school - not Coco. She's a sweetheart." Twilight rested a hand on her shoulder with a light hearted chuckle.
Sunset was dressed in a black skin tight jumpsuit. The suit was torn and ripped in several places. The side of her jumpsuit was a holster that carried a long black whip. She wore plastic cat ears and her face had a cat nose and whiskers drawn on with what seemed like eyeliner, along with dark red lipstick.
"We know what you mean." Rainbow replied to her casually. We caught up for a bit before separating and going into the party itself. True to their words, two DJs were set up together in the far center of the barn. Strobe lights were set up in two separate corners of the building. One of the DJs was a male, and appeared to appear in his early twenties. His black hair was styled to the side neatly and shaved from the sides. He sported black sunglasses, and wore a dark red flannel, no shirt underneath, exposing a large tribal tattoo on his chest.
"How's everyone doin' tonight?" He shouted into the microphone. The crowd cheered loudly. The girl beside him had pixie cut hair that was messy. Her hair had two different shades of blue - one light, the other dark. Her purple shades were pulled up onto her head. She wore a blue flannel, with a black sports bra underneath. She wore black fingerless gloves, and reached toward the same microphone.
"Neon Lights, and DJ PON-E in the god damn house!" Both her and Neon threw their hands in the air, seeking more applause. The girl with blue hair laughed into the mic, and grabbed it once more, "Here's a highly requested song for you guys."
The strobe lights shut off for a moment before they were replaced with a soft blue and red lighting. The crowd continued communicating as the song played. Rainbow Dash smiled and led me to a more secluded area of the crowd. On our way there, we bumped into Applejack.
"Can ya watch where the heck you're - Oh!" She fixed her straw hat and stood in front of us, "Sorry 'bout that."
"No worries. Where have you been?" I asked her as loudly as I could. She stared at me and frowned. She lifted her arms so we could look at her costume. She was dressed in a flannel and blue jeans with some hiking boots. Hay stuck out from every opening in her clothing, and that's when we realized.
"You know, you don't need to dress as a scarecrow to scare people away, right?" Rainbow Dash said to her, holding back her laughter. Applejack smacked Rainbow in the head with her hat.
"Jokes aside, have you seen Rare anywhere?" Rainbow asked. Applejack averted her gaze and scratched the back of her neck.
"Uh... I actually lost her in the crowd. Thought she may have been with you guys," Applejack replied. Rainbow raised an eyebrow.
"What has been up with you two lately?" Rainbow questioned, pressing Applejack. She shifted uncomfortably and bit her lip.
"Just disagreements here and there... The usual," Applejack stated bluntly before pushing past us. Rainbow and I eyed each other suspiciously. We brushed it off and went off to find the food table instead.
After an hour of wandering Sweet Apple Acres aimlessly, we stopped when we found ourselves standing in front of a treehouse. A dim light was on inside the treehouse. Rainbow Dash chuckled lightly.
"Scootaloo and her friends are always hanging out here. That's Apple Bloom's clubhouse... Otherwise as The Crusaders' Clubhouse... I think Scootaloo may be up there," She smiled and we began our ascent to the clubhouse. The door to the treehouse was a little small compared to normal doors. The windows of the treehouse were covered by some curtains from inside. Rainbow went inside first, as I followed suite.
"Hey Scoota - oh my god," Rainbow Dash backed away abruptly. When I looked inside, my face flushed red. Both Applejack and Rarity were inside. Rarity was straddling Applejack until they jumped apart at our arrival. They both screamed in terror when they were discovered. "Oh my god - what are you- why are -"
"Get out!" Rarity shouted out. Her face was redder than a tomato, as was Applejack's. Rainbow and I hurried out of the treehouse and ran back to the barn in shock.
"Oh my fucking god." Rainbow whispered to herself, before laughing nervously. "I knew they liked each other, but I didn't think Rarity would cheat on Spike like that."
"Wait, what?!" I asked her loudly. I stood frozen in shock. So that's why they were arguing so much... They didn't want to get caught. "It all makes sense now."
"Thank fucking God they had their clothes on still... Damn... That's going to be stuck in my mind for a while," Rainbow scratched her head and sighed loudly. "Damn it, AJ..."
"You found Applejack?" Spike suddenly asked us. We jumped out of our skins until we realized he and our other friends were around, with the exception of Pinkie Pie. My mouth went dry. Oh no...
"Uh... Yes?" I said quietly, unsure of what to say. Rainbow cleared her throat and stepped in front of me.
"We did, but uh... She... She got busy," Rainbow laughed nervously. Twilight crossed her arms and stepped forward.
"What are you hiding, Dash?" Twilight raised an eyebrow. Rainbow remained unfazed by her correct assumption.
"Nothing. Just telling you. She got a little occupied with a... A phone call. I think she was talking to Macintosh or Granny Smith," Rainbow responded confidently. Twilight held her suspicious gaze on Dash. I could have sworn, I thought I saw Dash begin to break into a cold sweat.
"Rarity! Hey!" Spike called out. My heart skipped a beat. We all spun around and spotted both Applejack and Rarity approaching us standing a fair distance apart from each other. Rarity looked as if she'd just finished crying. Applejack was looking down, obviously hurt. Spike ran up to his girlfriend.
"Spike Dragon, stop!" Rarity said loudly, her voice breaking. Spike stopped in his tracks and eyed her worriedly. Rarity stood silent before exhaling slowly, "I need to speak to you. Privately."
Spike nodded and walked up next to Rarity. When he tried wrapping his arm over her shoulders, she dodged it and held her arms crossed over her chest. Applejack watched the duo walking away together. A sad look crossed her eyes before she walked away toward the farmhouse.
"Party's over, y'all... Get the word out," Applejack said solemnly without another word. Rainbow Dash released her grip on my hand and chased after Applejack, leaving me alone with Twilight and Sunset Shimmer. The two looked at me curiously. I sighed.
"Rainbow and I walked in on Rarity and Applejack... Um... Kissing," I said. Both girls looked fairly surprised. I was confused. Didn't they know they liked each other? Surely they saw it coming. "Either she's going to break up with Spike, or reconcile with him..."
"I'm calling the break up," Sunset answered with a small frown. Twilight looked over at Sunset.
"Really? They've been together for a while -"
"Twily... she cheated on Spike with AJ for... Who knows how long. For all we know, that's why they've been fighting so much recently," Sunset stated. Twilight tried to protest but sighed, silently agreeing. "I'm sorry... We can talk to both of them separately. Rarity and AJ, I mean..."
"Yeah, that's for the best." Twilight forced a smile. About ten minutes later, Rainbow returned looking defeated.
"She's refusing to talk to me. Our best bet is talking to Rarity, but she might be occupied," Rainbow pushed her hair back, clearly stressed out. I hugged her from the side. She rubbed my arm appreciatively. Just as I was about to say something, my phone vibrated in my front pocket.
I pulled out my pocket and I felt my heart sink to my stomach.
