Chapter 26: Hidden Values

Author's Note: I'm not positive how long it has been since I last updated this story. But I was genuinely surprised to see how this story has been ranked based off the tags, and I was so blown away when I saw this yesterday afternoon. After re-reading this book from start to finish, I felt that leaving it unattended was just plain dumb. I hope you forgive me for the year(s) long wait.

This past week, I have been travelling across different states (Utah, Colorado, Oregon, California, and New Mexico) on a family trip, and I felt that it was eye opening. More inspiration crossed my mind, and this story had been in the back of my mind throughout the journey. I'm typing this on my phone as I'm on the road in Idaho. Several miles away from Texas, haha.

As always, your feedback is important. Thank you all for the votes, the reads, the commentary... Everything.

"... Is that it?" Sheriff Silverstar hung his head low. His hands remained on each side of his hips. "That's all? All this... For this," I said raising my arms up towards my father's jail cell.

"I'm sorry, kid." He muttered under his breath and walked away from the room, leaving me alone in front of his empty cell.

*20 minutes earlier*

"Rainbow Dash! Stop! I need to talk to -"

"Fucking can it, Scootaloo!" I yelled over her angrily. She backed away. A mixture of hurt and anger swept through her eyes. Her confident demeanor faltered, but she regained herself as quickly as I spoke over her.

"Rainbow Dash, I know you're upset, but I found something that I think you should -" I cut her off again by walking out the front door of the mansion and slamming it behind me. Whatever it was couldn't have been more important than what I was about to do.

I hopped into my sports car and quickly started up my car. Through the rearview mirror, I saw Scootaloo chasing after me saying something. My hands gripped tightly onto the steering wheel as I speedily drove away and through the streets of my neighborhood.

Sorry Scoots... I just need to do this.

The drive to the jailhouse was fast, but when I arrived at the parking lot I took notice of an ambulance slowly taking off. After sloppily parking my car, I shoved open my door and swung it shut with a loud thud.

"Rainbow Dash -" An office greeted me, but I shoved past him angrily and into the jailhouse. He attempted to grab my arm, but I yanked it away from him lightning fast.

"Where is he?" I shouted out into the room. Other security guards took notice of my presence and hurried over to me. "Get the fuck away from me! Where is he?! He owes me answers!"

"Ma'am, I need you to calm down. If you fail to do so, I will use any type of force necessary," another police officer announced loudly through the large entrance doors. All heads shot toward the voice instantly, and I immediately recognized the tone.

With his gun drawn, Sheriff Silverstar held his stance until his eyes landed on me. A bewildered look crossed his face until he returned his weapon back into its holster.

"Miss Dash... What can I for you?" He questioned. His voice sounded hollow, and almost strained.

"Finally, someone that can actually help me..." I shoved myself through the security guards towards the sheriff. "I need to speak to Prism Dash. Immediately, if you would."

Sheriff Silverstar's eyes averted their gaze to the ceiling. He swallowed hard and looked back at me. His eyes seemed a bit puffy and red.

"Are you -"

"Your father was found dead this morning." He said, almost sounding shameful. My mouth dropped. My heart froze in place. A long silence filled the atmosphere with thick tension. He exhaled slowly before continuing shakily, "My men found him. He... Committed suicide. Used the bars on the walls to hang himself with some bedding."

More silence followed. The other guards shifted uncomfortably. I stared at the sheriff, still not quite being able to comprehend what was just said.

"O-Oh..." was all could escape from my lips. I blinked my eyes a few times and walked past everyone quietly. My eyes searched through the vacant jail cells. Some inmates held a somber look in their otherwise lifeless eyes.

"That man was across from me, ma'am," a voice spoke quietly with a thick accent. I trailed the voice and found a woman I instantly recognized.

"Zecora? What... Why are you here?" She smiled sadly at me and returned her gaze to the walls of the cell. She wore a long, flowy black and white striped strapless dress that reached down to her bare feet. Her dark complexion was decored with golden jewelry and white henna tattoos that wrapped around her forearms and hands. Her snow white hair was up in a messy bun.

"Protests were something those people detested. Those animals were getting hurt, while I was being curt on those dirt roads," she replied looking down at her hands.

"Someone get her out of there. What the Hell do I pay you fools for? She was supposed to be let out last night," Sheriff Silverstar said sternly to the men. They hurriedly reached Zecora's cell and unlocked it.

"That man was a good man in heart," she said to me as she stood up. "Know that I tried speaking to him, Miss Dash. I send my sincerest condolences." And with that she exited the building with a flourish.

I looked across Zecora's cell and saw the same design in front of me. Plain walls. Steel bench. Poorly made bed. The only difference was the fabric dangling from the iron bars in the other wall that served as a small window. I stepped towards it and shook my head.

My phone continuously vibrated in my pocket and I checked the notifications.

"What the fuck is wrong with you, Prism?" I whispered to nothing in particular. I scoffed and walked out of the building, head hung low and on the verge of tears.

Fluttershy's POV
"Oh, you are such a good boy!" I praised Krypto as he ran around my bike and I excitedly. I giggled and continued my walk to Rainbow Dash's house. As I entered her neighborhood, I saw her car speeding out. I jumped back further into the sidewalk as her car barreled out of the neighborhood, and was then out of sight. The engine roared and echoed through the street as it hurried off.

A few neighbors peeped out their windows, while a couple walked out of their homes to see the commotion. A few stared at me and I shyly continued my walk, this time a bit more anxiously and faster.

Krypto followed me closely, his tongue hanging from the side of his mouth. I smiled sweetly at him, but unpleasant thoughts came to mind. I hopped onto my bike and called out to Krypto to run after me as I sped through the neighborhood on my bike.

When I arrived at her home, I spotted her little sister sitting on the floor near the driveway miserably. I got off my bike and laid it down on the grass. I hurriedly made my way to Scootaloo.

"Scootaloo! Where did Rainbow go?" I asked worriedly. Scootaloo looked up at me in surprise and stood up.

"She drove off somewhere... I tried to talk to her, but whatever she found in my dad's room really upset her. I think she may have went to confront him," she said, afraid. Her hopeless gaze faded when she spotted the dog next to me. "Oh my gosh, is this one yours?"

"Well, I was planning on surprising Dashie with him, but I guess I'm a little late on that..." I pursed my lips and eyed the road, hoping that she would pull up.

When I turned back, Scootaloo was petting Krypto and playing with him. I smiled, then grabbed my phone to send a few text messages to Dash. Scootaloo noticed and sighed.

"Don't even bother... I called her a hundred times and she didn't even pick up... I doubt sending texts would get her attention," Scootaloo responded dryly. I bit my lip and put my phone back into my pocket.

"Why don't we head inside until she comes back?" I suggested. Scootaloo nodded, and the three of us walked into the empty mansion. When I looked at the wall near the staircase, I noticed a new addition.

"Oh! Who is that?" I pointed out to the portrait of the woman. Scootaloo stepped beside me and admired her. A faint smile appeared on her lips.

"That's our mom." She proudly said to me. I smiled. Before I could say anything, Scootaloo suddenly grabbed my hand. "Oh! I found something when I was hanging it up. It's what I tried showing Rainbow before she left..."

Scootaloo handed me some papers torn directly from a notebook. I hesitantly held them and opened them up. As I skimmed through the pages, my mouth fell open.

"Right? Who would have known?"

Rainbow Dash's POV
"S-Stupid asshole..." I stammered out as more tears fell from my face. I arrived at my home. I parked my car in the driveway and headed over to the front door, wiping away my tears from my face angrily.

When I opened it, I was surprised to find Fluttershy and Scootaloo... and a dog inside the living room sitting together discussing something. I stared in shock until Scootaloo noticed me.

"Rainbow!" Fluttershy turned and saw me. A relieved smile formed as both her and my sister got up to hug me tightly. In that moment, I felt safe in their embrace. More tears formed and seconds later I was sobbing quietly.

"Geez, what happened to you?" Scootaloo asked me jokingly. I pulled myself out of their hug and stared at them both.

"He's dead." Both of them stood together looking shocked. "I went searching for answers, and that's the only thing I found out..."

I angrily kicked the wall loudly, startling Fluttershy and Scootaloo. I slid down the wall and buried my face in my hands. I sighed heavily before I felt someone sidle up next to me. An all too familiar set of arms wrapped themselves around my neck. My arms automatically returned Fluttershy's embrace. She played with my hair as I calmed down.

"I know this isn't the best time... But Scootaloo found something in your mother's portrait," Fluttershy said to me sweetly. I didn't say a thing. There was a short pause before she continued, "Your parents both left a will..."

I sat up suddenly and stared at Fluttershy and Scootaloo. Now it was my turn to be surprised. No way in Hell did that bastard leave us something...

Scootaloo stepped toward me and kneeled down in front of me and quietly said, "This mansion is ours, Rainbow."
