Chapter 28: The ministry

The next morning as everyone was enjoying the breakfast of pancakes and sausages until there was a tapping at the window.

"I'll get it." Regulus said as he kissed his daughter's cheek before excusing himself from the table and opened the window just as Silvey swooped in and dropped a letter into his hand before giving the back of it an affectionate nip with her beak.

"Thank you." Regulus said giving her feathers an affectionate stroke before turning to Dimitry and holding out a hand.

"You and I need to go to the ministry." he said when his hand was grabbed by his daughter.

'I'm coming with you.' she said as her hand gripped his tightly. "Luci..." Regulus began but she only gripped his hand tighter in response.

'No, I'm coming.' she said as she kept a hold on his hand before taking her godfather's other hand as the three of them apparated to the ministry.

Once inside she stayed close to him keeping her hand in his.

'dad?' she asked looking up at him to which he hummed.

'I'm scared.' she said to which he squeezed her hand in reply showing her some comfort.

"It's okay honey, daddy's got you." he said wrapping his arm around her shoulders to which Luci snuggled close as they continued down the long hallway until they entered what looked to be a court room with witches and wizards on every available chair or bench.

'Dad...' Luci whimpered as she tightened her hold on his hand catching the attention of some of the witches in the crowd who gave her pitying looks to which she simply smiled back before looking up at her father with a small smile.

"Don't let go of my hand okay honey?" Regulus said as he smiled fondly at his daughter before turning his attention to the minister who scowled at them.

"Now that everyone is here we can begin the hearing." the minister began pointing a finger at Dimitry and Regulus accusingly. "You two are death eaters, you must unhand the girl at once!" he cried and Luci snuggled closer to her father as a result.

"The day the moon falls to the sea is the day we'll leave her." Dimitry hissed back his arm wrapping protectively around Luci's shoulders as his green eyes turned cold. "You have no doubt murdered the girl's father." Fudge hissed and Regulus saw red.

"I AM THE GIRL'S FATHER!" he snarled causing a hush to sweep over the crowd.

"Roxy Black was a death eater too, she did something that changed everything she betrayed the dark lord knowing well that she would die and told myself and her husband to take their baby daughter and run. she sacrificed her life to protect us and gave us another chance of living our lives outside of fear." Dimitry said his hand on Regulus's shoulder as they continued to glare up at the minister when suddenly Luci fixed her piercing gray eyes on the minister.

"I might be the daughter of two death eaters but that gives you no right to take me from my father because of his past. I was in St Mungo's for six months after being attacked by a group of death eaters led by Bellatrix Lestrange, I was the victim of the cruciatus curse  and during my recovery in the hospital my godfather was very sick and nearly lost his life. my father had been running back and forth taking care of both me and Dimitry. if you think for one second that my father cared very little about me or my family then you are unfit to be minister. you are trying to break apart an already broken family." Luci said before raising her chin slightly as she gripped her father's hand a little softer showing him some affection as she surveyed the crowd of shocked looking witches and wizards before turning her attention back to the minister with a cold glare.

after a few moments of silence the minister spoke keeping his scowl fixed on the two former death eaters. "We shall put it to a vote, all in favor of these two death eaters being dropped of all charges and free to live their lives say aye and those not say nay.' he said and practically everyone in the room rose to their feet and said 'aye' much to the anger of the minister who begrudgingly dropped all charges and announced that the hearing had come to an end.
