The nest empties

"That was a hard week. Luke spent the entire flight worrying that his brothers and dad would hate him for not being there. Obviously, they didn't, we stayed at Luke's dad's house and the first thing Luke got from his dad and his brothers was a hug." I nodded. Alexa returned it.

"After that, the next few years were quiet again. Until the kids started to leave home." I smiled.

"Oh god. What was that like?" Alexa chuckled.

"A fucking mind field." I smiled, making the audience laugh.

"I always felt bad for Leanne because Kiera was the first to leave home and Charlie was the last but with Leanne, we'd done it before, and we would be doing it again, so it didn't feel like as much of a big deal as it did with her brother and her sister." I spoke.

"Which was the most eventful leaving of home?" Alexa asked. I thought for a moment.

"Probably Charlie. He had been dating his wife, well, his girlfriend at the time, for a year and a half and they had started to rent a flat together. That day was hard." I sighed.

I yawned as I sat in front of the TV with Luke.

"You tired, babe?" Luke asked.

"Yeah." I yawned again.

"Come on then, let's head up." He sighed, turning off the TV and standing up. I followed suit and smiled as I felt Luke wrap his arms around my waist from behind as we walked. We walked up the stairs and towards our bedroom. I stopped as I passed Charlie's room. I creaked the door open and looked in. I smiled at the sight of Charlie and Miranda asleep, Charlie laying on his back with Miranda's head on his chest and her hand on his stomach. Luke appeared beside me.

"He's not my little boy anymore." I choked.

"Babe, I hate to break this to you, but he's not been a little boy since he was seventeen." Luke sighed. I looked up at him.

"What?" I asked. He looked at me.

"Well, he was seventeen when he-."

"I've just got it, stop talking." I grimaced. He chuckled as he took my waist and walked us into the bedroom.

I stood in the kitchen, cooking bacon and pancakes. I smiled as Luke walked in.

"Morning, babe." Luke spoke, pecking my lips as he reached for a pancake.

"Ah, ah, no, that's for Charlie and Miranda." I spoke, slapping his hand away.

"Ow." He chuckled.

"What's the point in you cooking all of this food for him when you know that they're not going to eat it all, and not letting me have any?" he sighed.

"It's the last time that I'm ever going to be able to cook breakfast for my baby boy, not to mention your cholesterol levels right now." I mumbled.

"He's hardly a baby anymore, sweetheart, he's twenty-five." Luke scoffed.

"And still living at home." I sighed.

"But he's moving out today." Luke chuckled.

"Which is why I'm cooking him and Miranda all of this." I nodded as Charlie and Miranda walked in.

"Morning, baby." I smiled.

"Morning." He yawned as they sat down at the breakfast bar.

"I made you this." I spoke, gesturing to the plates of food.

"Mum, why? We're not going to be able to eat all of this." Charlie groaned.

"Told you." Luke chuckled, biting into his toast.

"I think that it's sweet." Miranda smiled. "Thank you, Miranda, nice to know someone appreciates my cooking." I smiled, looking at Charlie and making him roll his eyes.

"Dad, I have one more bag." Charlie spoke.

"Got it." Luke nodded as he lifted it up and carried it out to Charlie's car.

"You got everything, love?" I asked.

"I think so." He sighed, looking around. I nodded as we walked out to the car.

"Thank you for everything, Mr and Mrs Hemmings." Miranda smiled.

"Call us Y/N and Luke. You're part of the family." I smiled. She returned it.

"Look after my son, okay? Don't let him get into trouble, make sure that he doesn't make you do all of the housework, always use protection-."

"Jesus, mum." Charlie groaned.

"What? Having a baby before marriage is hard, we would know." I chuckled.

"Don't worry, I'll take good care of him." She smiled before climbing into the car. Charlie walked to me. I sighed as I hugged him tightly, closing my eyes as I rested my head against his chest.

"I'm going to miss you so much, baby. Feel free to call us whenever, feel free to swing by and come home whenever, we're always going to be your parents, even though we'll be your parents in a different house." I smiled. He returned it before kissing my head and letting me go as he turned to Luke.

"Come here, big guy." Luke chuckled, hugging him tightly. Charlie returned the hug, resting his chin against Luke's shoulder.

"Your mum's right, you're always welcome. I love you so much, son." He spoke. Charlie nodded as he pulled away.

"And she's not kidding about using protection, we love your sister, but it was bloody hard work trying to arrange a wedding with a two-month-old baby crying every minute." He chuckled.

"Don't worry, dad, Miranda and I have decided to wait until we're married to have a baby." Charlie reassured.

"Good." Luke smiled. Charlie returned it as he climbed into the driver's seat of the car and shut the door.

"See you later, guys." He spoke, starting the car.

"Have a safe journey, we love you." I smiled as Luke wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me closer.

"Bye!" Miranda shouted as they drove away. I smiled as we waved until they drove around the corner. Tears pricked my eyes as I bit my lip.

"That's it. No more wiping runny noses, no more getting up at ungodly hours because one of them is ill, no more school run, no more...no more kids." Luke sighed. I looked at him as a tear fell from my eye.

"I want my babies back." I choked. Luke sighed and nodded as he pulled me into his body.

"I know, baby, I know. So do I." he mumbled, kissing my head.
