The end begins

(Please note that this part may be upsetting to some readers, due to mentions of cancer. If you're upset by this, please don't read this part or please be mindful when reading it. Thank you and if anyone ever needs to talk, I'm always here)

"Now, we have time for one last question, and I'm afraid that I'm going to ask you a rather tough question." Alexa warned.

"Okay." I nodded. She looked at me.

"What happened when you found out that Luke was sick?" she asked. I gulped and looked down.

"I remember the day that we were told as it if were yesterday, which I've always found odd." I nodded.

The sun streamed through the windows as Luke and I sat in the doctor's office. The doctor walked in.

"Hello, Mr and Mrs Hemmings." He smiled as he sat down.

"Hey." Luke nodded.

"So, Mr Hemmings, since you're now the past the age of 75, you're subject to monthly medical check-ups." He spoke. Luke nodded again. The doctor looked at us.

"I'm afraid that in your last check-up, we found something." He spoke quietly. My eyes widened.

"What did you find?" he asked quietly.

"You have a tumour in your right lung and I'm afraid that it's cancerous." He admitted. I choked and put my hand over my mouth as Luke's eyes widened.

"I'm afraid that you have cancer, Mr Hemmings." The doctor spoke. Luke looked at him.

"I understand that this is very upsetting news, so I'll leave you to process this with your wife." He nodded before leaving the room. Luke looked at me.

"Don't freak out." He spoke.

"We've just been told that you have cancer and you're telling me to not freak out." I scoffed. He sighed.

"I'm going to be fine." He reassured.

"You can't know that." I choked. He sighed.

"Okay, no, I don't. But I know that as long as I have you by my side, I will be fine." He nodded. I sighed.

"What are we going to tell the kids?" I choked.

"I don't know." He mumbled. I sighed and hugged him tightly.

"We're going to be okay. I'm going to be okay." He nodded into my hair.

"He fought that horrible disease for years. It was so hard, for all of us. To see him growing weaker by the day. It was a torture in itself." I spoke before looking down.

"And, after two years, he gave up on the chemo." I nodded.

I opened my eyes as I heard Luke shoot up. I sat up and sighed as I heard him rush into the en-suite. I climbed out of bed and walked to the door to see Luke clutching the toilet seat bowl as he vomited into it. He vomited again before sighing and sitting against the bathtub. He looked at me.

"Did I wake you?" he asked. I shrugged.

"I don't mind." I spoke as I sat next to him. He looked at me.

"I need to tell you something." He mumbled.

"Okay." I nodded. He sighed.

"I'm going to stop the chemo." He admitted quietly. I looked at him.

"What?" I choked.

"Look, babe, I've been having the treatment for two years and it's done nothing. It's not made the cancer smaller, it's only made me sick." He sighed. I looked at him with glassy eyes.

"I've had a good life, sweetheart. I'm 82, I've lived a lot longer than some people have. I pursued my dream career, with my four best friends, not to mention that I'm the only one left now. I've got three amazing children and seven beautiful grandchildren. And best of all, I got to spend my life with you." He spoke gently. I looked at him as a tear left my eye.

"I've lived a good life, and I'd rather have it cut short by a few months and be happy and with my family than live an extra half a year and be throwing up every day and growing paler by the second." He nodded. I gulped.

"Whatever you want to do, I'll be there for you. One hundred percent." I promised. He nodded and gave me a small smile. I returned it before resting my head in the crook of his neck, making him pull me closer.
