Bringing Charlie home
"What was it like when he was well enough to be brought home?" Alexa asked.
"It was brilliant. He was already three months old by the time that he was big enough to come home and our daughters hadn't met their little brother yet, so they were very excited to meet him." I nodded.
Luke stopped the car as he rolled into the driveway. We climbed out of the car and Luke started to walk up to the house as I opened the car door and started to unbuckle Charlie from his carrier.
"Come on, baby boy." I smiled, earning a small smile back as he slowly opened his eyes. I gently picked him up, cradling him in my arms as I carefully walked up to the path.
"Mummy!" I looked up and smiled as Luke opened the door and Leanne and Kiera ran out.
"Ah, ah, no, girls, come on." Luke spoke, grabbing Leanne and lifting her up as she ran past him.
"Daddy!" she squealed.
"Kiera, come back!" he yelled.
"No! I want to see baby Charlie!" she laughed.
"Babe, baby Charlie is still very little, mummy needs to get him inside." I sighed.
"Kiera, come back here now!" Luke shouted. Kiera sighed before running back to Luke.
"Good girl, come on, you can see baby Charlie once mummy has him inside, okay?" Luke nodded as he put Leanne down. Kiera nodded as her and Leanne ran back into the house.
"Thank you." I sighed as I walked to Luke.
"It's okay." He smiled, looking down at Charlie as I carried him into the house. The girls looked at me expectantly.
"Let mummy sit down." Luke spoke. I sat down carefully, cradling Charlie as he slept.
"Can I hold him?" Kiera asked.
"Okay love, but you have to be really careful with him." I spoke. She nodded as she climbed onto the sofa next to me. Luke gently took Charlie from me and cradled him.
"You've got to cradle his head, okay?" he asked. Kiera nodded.
"Here we go, good girl." He smiled as he laid Charlie into Kiera's arm. She smiled down at him.
"Can I hold him?" Leanne asked quietly.
"No, sweetheart, you're not old enough." Luke sighed as he picked her up and sat her on his lap.
"But you let Kiera hold him." She huffed.
"Kiera is five, darling, you're only three, that's not old enough." Luke spoke. She pouted.
"Turn that frown upside down for daddy, huh?" he smiled at her. She just looked at him.
"Daddy knows that you can't stay mad at him when he does this." He spoke before blowing a raspberry against her cheek and making her squeal.
"Our lives were pretty quiet after that. Well, as quiet as they can be when you're married to a famous musician and you have three young children." I chuckled. Alexa returned it and smiled.
"What's the next big thing that happened to you?" she asked. My smile faltered.
"Well, just after Charlie's fourth birthday, we found out that Luke's mum had died." I nodded. Alexa returned the nod.
"It was hard, for all of us. Luke was obviously in pieces for months, Kiera was nine, so she understood what had happened. Leanne and Charlie was still quite oblivious, but they found out more when we had to fly Australia for her funeral." I spoke.
"Guys, we need to leave this house in five minutes, otherwise we're going to miss the plane, we can't miss this plane." I sighed as I carried Charlie's bag into the living room.
"Mummy?" Charlie asked.
"Yes, sweetheart?" I asked.
"Why is daddy crying?" he spoke quietly. I sighed and knelt down in front of him so that I was at eye level with him.
"Grandma Hemmings has gone to heaven, which means that daddy isn't going to be able to see her again, which is why he's upset and that's why we're going to Australia, okay?" I spoke. He nodded.
"I need you to tell your sisters to bring their bags out here, and I'm going to talk to daddy, can you do that for me?" I asked.
"Yeah." He smiled. I returned it.
"Good boy." I spoke, ruffling his hair before going upstairs and heading towards our bedroom. I gulped as I heard small whimpers. I opened the door and sighed as I saw Luke hunched over, his head in his hands.
"Baby?" I asked quietly. He looked at me and sniffed, rubbing his wet eyes.
"Yeah." He nodded.
"You okay?" I asked as I sat next to him. He shook his head and sniffed.
"My dad and my brothers are going to hate me." He mumbled. My eyes widened.
"Why would they hate you?" I asked.
"Because I wasn't there. They were all there, but I wasn't." he choked.
"Baby, she died suddenly, and it just happened to be the day that her and your dad were having your brothers over. They're not going to hate you, you had no way of knowing." I reassured. He nodded and looked at me.
"Look, you're in the same boat as they are. You were her son too, they're going to know that you're just as upset, and you know what, I'll deal with your brothers if they hate you, okay?" I spoke. He smiled.
"You can't deal with them, you're over a foot smaller than them." He chuckled.
"They know what I can do." I smiled, making him laugh. He looked at me.
"Thank you." He nodded.
"Of course, babe." I reassured. He sighed before wiping his eyes and standing up.
"We better get going, we can't miss the flight." He spoke before opening the door. I smiled as I followed him out.
"Daddy!" Charlie laughed.
"Yes, my little monster?" Luke chuckled as he picked him up.
"Are you okay?" he asked. Luke looked at him and nodded.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm okay, little guy, are you?" he asked.
"Yeah." Charlie nodded. Luke returned it.
"Good. Come on." He spoke, kissing his cheek before putting him down.
