Chapter Twelve

I didn't take his hand right away.
I'm curious about his proposition, I won't lie. He must be wanting to show me this for a very specific reason. I've noticed he doesn't do anything unless he has a full reason to, so this must be to reveal something. Maybe he is trying to distract me from the real reason I am here. He might think that it will soften me up to him.
"Shouldn't we stay in here, away from being seen?" I question, folding my arms over my chest. I'm reluctant to see what the consequences are to Time being seen by someone from this era.
"We won't be seen. I would say in less than ten minutes, young me will be out in these fields," Time tells me, the smile on his not matching what is going on in his eyes.
He looks...Sad.
"Fine, but only because I want to," I comment. Despite his offer, Time seems solemn. Maybe he is simply nervous about showing me what he looked like when he was so young. I suppose I don't blame him.
Time waited outside for me to dress into the ill fitting male clothes he lended me. People will surely be confused about why I'm wearing a mans clothing, but it's better than them questioning where I actually come from. We haven't devised a story to cover why I am here, in this small town all of a sudden.
Outside, the world looks barren. If it were in today's time, all this area would be covered in taken property. Yet here, it seems so...free.
"We will stick just outside the village," Time comments.
I nod. Right now, I'm too curious about this younger Time to be worrying about my future. I've accepted it's unknown to a point, but I'm still uneasy about it. Perhaps it is because I haven't yet had a chance to sit down and truly think about any of this. Maybe then it will hit me, and I have a feeling it won't be good.
For now, Time leads me through the grass, off any beaten in track. He points to a mound not far from us, covered in the same length of grass we currently wade through.
"We will sit up there to see everything."
I have plenty of questions, but I keep them to myself as we walk up the mound. It gives the perfect vantage point over the meadow, and even the village which isn't far off. I'm not sure what time it is, but evening must be falling, people heading in for the night.
"So what are we meant to be witnessing?" I question, looking around the field. I see nothing but swaying wildflowers and grass.
Time places his finger to his lips before pointing.
I follow where he points, finally seeing what we came here for. Two people rustle through the grass, whispering between each other. Squinting, I look closer as they approach, seeing it's a male and female. It's Time, and a pretty girl that clasps his hand tightly. They must be in a relationship, I realise.
What strikes me first, is he isn't as young as I thought. He's a boyish teengager, when I assumed I would be seeing his as a child. I suppose being an immortal makes your perception of age and youth is different.
"Can't they see us?" I whisper. All they have to do is glance up and they would see us hidden within the grass, watching them.
"They are too distracted," Time comments.
I have a feeling this isn't the first time he has come here to watch this moment back. It must be a fairly important moment in his life for him to bring me here to show me. All I'm witnessing is young lovers sneaking into the grass.
"My mother will be expecting me back for dinner," I hear the girl say to Time. She's giggling, drunk with love as she follow the immortal. Now I can finally see them. The girl is cute, pretty. She looks different, but I assume that's because she comes from a completely different ear.
Time hasn't changed that much, though.
He looks younger in his features, his hair a little longer, shaggier. But those eyes, pure golden, brighter than ever, have not changed at all.
"Come on, five minutes longer?" Time drawls. It's strange hearing him flirt, especially with another girl. I know that I don't exist from this time for another few million years, but seeing him with another girl makes my stomach stir. Is this a jealous feeling? No, I'm just uncomfortable. I don't want to be seeing this.
They kiss, and thankfully for me, it's only brief. What unnerves me the most, is the way Time is looking at her, that innocent gaze of love as she slips through the grass, pulling him along with her.
"I have something to tell you," Time says. He even sounds youthful, a boyish charm to his tone. His accent is most definitely different too.
The girl turns around. "So do I. But you first."
The pair settle in the grass. All of a sudden, the mood has changed. The giggles and smiles coming from this girl have ceased, and she looks serious. She must be feeding off Time, who also looks worried. When I glance beside me at my Time, he watches intently, jaw clenched, shoulders tense.
"We have been together for a few months now, and I thought I should be honest with you," Time says softly, grabbing the girls hands within his. She tilts her head, looking somewhat nervous for his admission.
The first thought that comes to my mind is that he's going to propose.
"Josie and Ed aren't my real parents. Because I'm an Immortal. I don't have my powers yet, but I'm going to live forever. Can you believe that!" Time tells her.
He looks beyond excited to share the news with her, however, I watch as her faces goes ghost pale, and she pulls her hands from his. Time deflates, noticing how terrified the girl looks. I suddenly realise why I was brought here to witness this. I'm going to witness Time's first rejection.
"An Immortal? What's an Immortal?" she questions. "Is it a disease? Are you going to die?"
"No, I'm going to live forever. Like, eternity. I can't explain it, but that Moon you pray to is what created me. I have powers that are important, but I can't use them just yet. When I can, I'll be beyond powerful. Like Fate...You know of him right. He's the first recorded Immortal. Now I want you to be the girl who is with me forever," Time says quickly.
It's a lot, even for me to take in, and I'm not the one sitting in front of him, receiving this mind blowing news.
"Get away from me...I don't want to be with an Immortal," she says suddenly, stumbling to her feet. Time's eyes widen, not expecting her to have that reaction.
"But we can live together forever," Time tells her, grabbing at his arm.
She whirls around. "I'm cheating on you! I slept with your brother and I don't regret it. Now get away from me."
Time stands there, watching as she wades through the grass, leaving him to wonder what just happened. My entire heart has stopped alongside his. How could she do that? All that time she was cheating on him and pretending to be in love with him. And with his brother? Thought?
Wordlessly, I watch Time walk away in the opposite direction to the girl, head hung low.
"The first of many heartbreaks. I didn't know it then, but turns out being an Immortal isn't all it's cut out to be," Time says from beside me. I blink a few times, trying to recover my thoughts of what just went down in front of me.
"Did she tell your entire village?" I ask.
"She went straight to my brother who she was sleeping with. Being an Immortal himself, he used the small amount of power he had access to to get into her thoughts and strip her of that memory," Time tells me. "After that, Thought and I didn't talk for months. I never trusted him again."
I never knew Thought did that, and to his brother of all people...It's almost impossible to wrap my head around.
"Thought wasn't the best kind of guy for a long time, and caused me a lot of pain. He managed to turn me bitter over time, while he ended up changing his tact and become the angelic hero everyone wanted," Time tells me, looking off into the distance.
Part of me wants to say sorry, but I struggle to. Seeing this doesn't change what has been done.
But now, I think I understand him a little better.
