Chapter 1

Feedback would really be great, sorry if there are any grammatical errors

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the end of the school day, he could be going home by now but instead he was here. Yugi could hear the low hum of chatter coming from the other side of the door. He sighed, after all his schooling years of being completely under the radar he had put his hand up for one of the main roles in the school play. Truth be told, he hadn't actually expected to get the role. He was short, socially awkward and got over emotional...a lot. Him getting this role meant that he was actually a really good actor, that, or everyone else was jut really bad. Yugi hoped it was the former. He sighed again, it was now or never, slowly he pushed open the door into the school hall and was greeted with a wall of sound. As he expertly navigated his way through the crowds of chattering students he picked up on some of their conversations, "Oh my god! Did you guys see that? He, like, totally did it!" "Yo dude, did you see that awesome catch I did the other day? It was, like, totally rock'n!"

Yugi sighed in exasperation, he couldn't believe that education was wasted on these people. They only wanted to talk about 'who did what' and 'who did who'. No one but Yugi and his friends talked about actual important things like 'how the past will affect the future' or how 'different games originated in different parts of the world', important things.

Yugi finally found his way to the front of the crowd where a tall and skinny man was folded up behind a desk. The desk was positioned facing the stage and was piled up with scripts, enough for everyone. While Yugi waited for the man to finish whatever it was that he was doing, he allowed his amethyst gaze to wander the crowd. He picked out a group of popular girls, Yugi guessed that the only reason they were here was to get their turn under the spotlight. Next to them was a large group of hefty, dopey looking guys, probably dragged into this by their popular girlfriends. And next to them was a group of both guys and girls, they were normal, not popular but not losers either. Yugi felt a heat on the back of his neck. He turned to find himself looking into the crimson eyes of a boy leaning against the stage. The boy looked almost like him, same starfish-shaped, tri-coloured, gravity defying hair, the same clothes even the same choker. However, there were some obvious differences. The other boy was taller, had sharper features and had some blonde, lightning shaped, streaks traveling up the spikes of his hair. However the most obvious difference between the two boys was that the other looked confident in how he held himself, while Yugi, well, he was just Yugi, that wimpy kid that got beat up...a lot.

Yugi wasn't sure how long they were staring at each other for; it could have been seconds, it could have been minutes, he didn't know. And he was never going to find out as he was gently shoved and broke eye contact with the boy. "Hey Yugi! I didn't know that you auditioned for the play."

Yugi turned to find that Anzu was smiling at him intently, he smiled back. Anzu had been his friend ever since he could remember. He owed her a lot. "Yeah, I got one of the main roles actually."

"What, really? That's amazing Yugi!"

"Yeah, but it would kind of help if I knew what the play was about."

Anzu smiled sympathetically and turned to face the man that had now stood up from his desk and had turned to look at the crowd, Yugi trained his gaze to watch as the man made motions with his long, stick like arms to silence the flock of chattering students. This man reminded Yugi of a spider, wearing a black suit, black shirt, black tie, and even a black beret atop his mop of blacker hair.. His face, though, was as pale as the scripts on his desk. The way he moved was unnatural but slightly hypnotic. The flashes of his dull, grey eyes was eventually enough to silence the students.

"All of you are here because you are credible assets to this performance." The way he talked was slow and careful, but there was nothing boring about it as there seemed to be an dangerous edge to his words. "You may call me Mr Kumo, I will be directing this play." He sighed as if there were a million other places he would rather be, "I suppose you would all like to know what this play will be about?"

There was mumbled agreement from the rest of the students. Yugi's heart quickened its pace.

"This performance is based off a true story. A story that occurred 3,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt."

A small smile played Yugi's lips, he loved Ancient Egypt.

"The story is about a pharaoh who is mean and generally just a terrible person. His servant however, is a kind soul who befriends the pharaoh and teaches him how to be a good person, and in turn, a great king. This peace can not last as a terrible evil threatens to destroy the empire and all in all, friendship prevails, blah blah blah. Each of you come and grab a script, on the second page you find a list of characters matched up with a student. I will have no arguing over which part you got, you will go home and read over the script for homework. We will start practising tomorrow afternoon, same place same time." He ended with a clap of his pale hands and sat down again, watching carefully as the flow of students ran up to get a script.

Anzu leaned down and whispered in Yugi's ear, "This actually sounds pretty cool!"

"Yeah Anzu, I knew you would love a play about friendship,"

Anzu looked slightly flustered and huffed, "That's not what I meant,"

"Sure.... I believe you," Yugi said giggling slightly. Anzu couldn't take it, she burst out laughing too.

Eventually both Yugi and Anzu were composed enough to grab a script without snorting and breaking into another fit of laughter.

They both opened their scripts to the second page, Yugi running his palm gently down the page, feeling the paper smooth and cool against his skin. He heard a snort from next to and looked to see Anzu trying to hold back a giggle. "What?" He asked cautiously.

"Oh nothing, it's just that your the servant, Heba." She stated lightly.

"What?!" Yugi quickly searched down the row for his name, he looked through the whole list frantically but couldn't see his name. He looked through again, slowly this time, and found his name second from the top. He was the servant. He was disappointed that he wasn't the pharaoh, but then thinking about it further he figured that the servant was actually closer to how Yugi actually was. He smiled. He was going to make this work. I wonder who the pharaoh is? He thought. He looked above his name and saw 'Yami' next to 'Pharaoh'. He felt as though that name should ring a bell, but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't think of who it might be.

Yugi and Anzu had made it out of the building in silence, each lost in thought. As they were heading towards the gate Yugi saw the boy from before, walking alone. Yugi had a quick argument with himself before deciding to call out to him.

"Hey, what are you doing Yugi! He's one of the popular kids!" Anzu whispered harshly.

"If he's so popular then why is he walking alone?"

Before Anzu could answer they had caught up to the boy, who had stopped and waited for them.

"Hey," he said gruffly, "what do you want?"

Yugi was confused by his coldness but shook it off. "Oh, nothing, I was just wandering if you wanted to walk home with us? I'm Yugi by the way."

The boy nodded and fell in next to Yugi. They walked for a few blocks in complete silence before Anzu finally decided to start up a conversation, " Soooo, I didn't know that popular boys were into drama and stuff?"

The boy laughed bitterly, "Their not." His eyes flashed an even darker shade of red, "When you're in the popular group, it's fine, you have 'friends', you don't get bullied, but if you step out of line, even once say what you actually think, everyone will turn on you faster than you can blink. Frankly, auditioning for the play is stepping way over that line. Tomorrow, they're all going come at me with everything they have, and there's no where else I can go." And with that, he looked away.

Yugi felt sorry for him, all this time Yugi had thought that being popular was what he wanted, but now, if that is what it was really like, he was grateful that he was a wimp. He was grateful that he had friends that actually cared about, friends that helped him out, friends that he could trust.

They had almost reached the Game Store when Yugi made the decision that would change his life, "I-If you want, y-you could hang out with me and my friends tomorrow?"

The boy's head snapped around to look at Yugi, he looked surprised at his kindness. "You would really let me hang out with you?"

Yugi smiled, "Of course,"

The boy looked of into the distance, "Thankyou, Yugi."

Yugi fist pumped internally and smiled.

"One last thing though..."

"Hmmm,"

"What's your name?"

The boy looked at him, his crimson gaze searching his whole being, weighing him up.

"Yami, my name is Yami." And with that he walked off, leaving a bemused Yugi and Anzu on the curb.
