Spanners & Screwdrivers

Passed out on the couch mid movie, Bruce's arm swung limply over the arm of the couch, the rest of his body curled tightly into a soft woollen blanket, painkillers on the table beside him.

Casiel sat cross legged on the floor in front of him, spanners and screwdrivers littering the carpet as she altered her project. It was coming to life, progressively, designed completely of her own skill with no use from her magic, even prior to the bracelets. Both Stark's would often sit with her in restless nights, tinkering with different projects or altering their suits while offering some of the strangest conversations Casiel had ever had.

This night was different however. She had tweaked at her little project for hours until suddenly it's glowing blue eyes opened and it rose to its clawed feet, staring at her intently, beeping, metal wings outstretched. It was of the same size as a newborn infant.

Smooth metal of various types created the look, with two big electric blue eyes and beak. He beeped, watching her quietly and tilting his little robotic head.

"Alright Friday, I need the chip now" Casiel spoke, not hearing as Bruce quietly sat up, watching her intently. A metal rod extended from the ceiling nearby, holding a small chip loaded with Jarvis' old interface. Casiel inserted it into the small creation, grinning as it suddenly spoke.

"Greetings, how can I assist you?"

"Hello buddy" She whispered, holding up her hand. He mimicked the response with his right wing, beeping happily. "What should we name you?" She pondered, frowning softly in thought. "How about something fun, like Chaos or some-"

"Interface renaming to Chaos" The voice beeped. Casiel laughed softly, shrugging and accepting the name, being suddenly startled as a hand gently rested on her shoulder.

"So this is what you've been working on" Bruce smiles softly, voice laced with sleep and still scratchy from the bruising.

"I need something to pass the time" Casiel laughs softly, stretching the robots wings. The robot took form of a metal hawk, mimicking as many animalistic behaviours as possible when it wasn't speaking English.

"How about sleeping, that passes time" her Father jabbed sarcastically, glancing at the dark circles under eyes, "humans rely on it."

"I'm fine" She grumbled, inserting these earpiece into the ear. "Alright, Chaos, show us your wings" She instructed. Both metal wings outstretched. "Okay, good! Now, tell me where Mr Stark is currently."

"In the lab, Miss Banner"

"Can you let him know you're in operation?"

"Message sent to lab 1, screen 6."

"Thank you Chaos."

"You're welcome, Madam."

She rises wordlessly and walks to the other side of the apartment beside the window, outstretching her arm. Chaos instantly takes flight and lands on her forearm, sitting there.

"Good boy" She laughs, moving him up to her shoulder. "We might need to make you a little lighter somehow" She noted, placing him on the kitchen table. Chaos tilts his head. "No offence, it's the metal, not you" she recovers smoothly. He chirps with disapproval.

"Young lady, you need to go to bed" Bruce spoke suddenly, also standing and wrapping the blanket higher around his shoulders.

"I don't need-"

"No more arguing" he spoke calmly, waiting for her. Her and her Father's rooms were only separated by a wall, he ensured she was in her section of the room before he lay down. She perched Chaos on her desk, scratching the back of her neck.

"I'm going to have to buy you a bird stand or something."

"That would be lovely, Madam"

"Alright, I'll do so tomorrow morning. Goodnight Chaos."

"Goodnight Miss Banner."

Bruce was startled to hear wild thrashing of sheets from within the apartment. Within the room.

He is washed over with panic, fearing something is hurting his daughter, he rushes to her room. Chaos raises his wings angrily, scanning to ensure it was Bruce before standing down.

His heart shattered as he saw her grasping the sheets tightly, thrashing in her bed, murmuring in her sleep, panicked and incoherent.

It was not English. It was not a language of Earth.

Bruce say on the corner of her bed, calmly resting his hand on her back. "Cas? Sweetheart? Wake up darling, it's just a bad dream" He whispered softly, patting her back and shaking her shoulder. "Cas, you gotta wake up hun, it's just a dream."

After a long while of thrashing and contained screams, Casiel's eyes flew open, shining bright with angelic grace, causing Bruce to quickly cover his eyes, just as Casiel had instructed him if her eyes ever turned that colour. She sat up sharply, suddenly the shine faded and she breathed heavily, glancing around before her gaze settled. She teared up before regaining control, a stern expression washing over her features as she quickly rubbed her eyes, rising to her feet."Sweetheart? Talk to me, are you alright?"

"I-I'm fine" She spoke quickly, swaying backwards on her feet, eyes glassy. He grasped her hand.

"Please don't lie to me-"

"I don't w-want to talk a-about it" She whispered sharply, letting go and walking out of the room, Chaos following and landing on her right shoulder. Bruce held back his original response, tearing up slightly and going to sit on his bed, hearing the elevator open and Casiel exit the room.

She took the elevator to floor 43, walking sluggishly to the coffee machine, glancing at the clock reading 4:35am. She sighed softly, placing her hand on the coffee machine, finding it warm already. She suddenly became aware of the scribbling just behind the bench, making her coffee before walking around to the kitchen table, watching Peter Parker's frantic handwriting.

"Parker, what are you doing up at an hour like this?"

He visibly flinched. "You scared me" He laughed softly. "I have an assignment."

"When's it due?"

"A few hours-"

"Oh Peter" She laughed softly, "cram assignments are the worst."

"Tell me about it" he laughed, holding the side of his head.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah yeah, I'm good" He spoke, voiced laced with sleep as his eyes drooped. Casiel took a sip of her coffee, casting her eyes out the window to look at the blanket of fog resting on the city. The next time she looked back he was out cold, asleep on his arm, chest rising and falling slowly.

Casiel smiles gently, walking and sitting beside him, taking the pen out of his hand. She slid the physical copy of the assignment to her and read through it, seeing Peter had finished all but one section. Casiel quietly filled out the section, understanding the content and completing the assignment. She woke him after a while, assisting his exhausted self over to the couch to sleep, falling to slumber the second Casiel covered him with a wooly blanket.

She placed the completed assignment back in its plastic sleeve, leaving it inside his backpack. She nodded to Chaos, allowing him to land on her arm.

"I'd call that job well done, bud."
